Something funny about another wave of actors who starred in Harry Potter films coming out against the Supreme Court ruling - and therefore JK Rowling who funded the campaign.
This has one of the most heartwarming historical trans stories I've ever read. In 1971, Carl Macmichael and his cis son spoke to the Sunday paper. Not only did Carl's 15-year-old son support his father, but he was delighted to have a trans dad: "I think he's very brave. It's quite handy to have mum and dad the same person."
Shortly after transitioning, Carl asked Thelma O'Sullivan to become his nurse in 1969. She helped Carl medically transition for 2 years while realizing her feelings for him. "Many people have ridiculed Carl, and I suppose some people will think me odd for falling in love with him. But I don't care," she explained. "He has gone through a great deal and I hope I can give him a little of the happiness that he is seeking."
Like most trans people at the time, Carl claimed to be intersex. Having XY chromosomes and being capable of giving birth is extraordinarily rare, leaving us to wonder if he told this to newspapers for legitimacy. All the names in the article are pseudonyms so there was never any follow-up after 1971.
*post about how afab transfems/amab transmascs aren't real or whatever*
Me: "intersex people can sometimes have experiences with imposed/assigned gender that perisex people don't and due to that can sometimes have complex relationships to being cis/trans and may not fit perisex-centric ideas of what those words mean. A lot of intersex people who identify with their birth assignment (but not necessarily SIG/RGAB) have experiences much more similar to trans people of their gender rather than cis people of their gender and it is unfair to attempt to shove intersex people into boxes like this."
Perisex person 1: "tmes stop using intersex people as a gotcha for your transmisogyny only amabs can be transfem"
Perisex person 2: "you're so right! Adding to this, perisex afab transfems are also valid because any woman that wants to be masculine should be free to do that!"
Me: (actively ripping my hair out)
I wish we treated gender-affirming surgery with the excitement periodicals gave it in the 1950s. This November '58 article is so thrilled that doctors had finally invented effective genital surgeries that the editors dedicated several pages to the breakthrough. If this is not tax fraud, the laws need to be rewritten.
Sooooo few people are actually willing to defend the basic human rights of people who have committed crimes. Like I know it's not fun but if you genuinely believe in human rights as a concept you can't be okay with the state violating them in prisons I'm sorrrrry. Having moral principles is not always a fun time.
