Never seen an anime protag who's so purely earnest about protecting life like Edward Elric is. Sure, some other protags might have that as a faint undercurrent to their writing, but there is nothing faint or vague about it for Ed. He's so wholly upfront and genuine about protecting people and keeping people safe. He's so earnest about the value that life has, whatever form it may take (see: his fight in the 5th laboratory). It's honestly pretty incredible that Ed can see and believe in the beauty in life when his life has been anything but beautiful. His past is nothing short of horrific, yet he still believes life is so unfathomably precious and that it should be celebrated. I've never seen an anime protag who's so blatant about it.
