i know it’s midnight but i just saw a production of rnj that was So Good just everything but for now i want to talk specifically about tybalt and mercutio:
- so the play was set somewhere in the middle between 1590 and 1990 and it was Great listen: mercutio had a snap back, skinny jeans, and a doublet, tybalt had khakis and a red button up and a Good Jacket and it was just?? wow the costumes were amazing
- “make it a word and a blow” mercutio blew a kiss ?? and tybalt Blushed ? confirmed ok i was in the 2nd row Trust Me.
- the build up to the fight. and then mercutio seeing the fight as a game, tybalt all riled up by that. the montagues were trying to stop mercutio and the capulets were egging tybalt on, the contrast was!! and the fight choreography!! wow!
- speaking of fight choreography. during one sword-cross mercutio actually, honest to god, kissed tybalt right on the mouth just gonna leave that there
- as mercutio is dying it really looks like a joke at first; like it could really be just a scratch. and tybalt saw that, started smiling because “haha well he’s just joking he’ll laugh in a minute and have been fine all along”
- but then, mercutio starts to lose his step, his confidence. and everyone sees it’s serious. and tybalt’s smile fell and i can’t describe how horrified he looked. it actually broke my heart. and tybalt fell to his knees and just Stared at mercutio dying, even while gregory tried to get him to run, he just wouldn’t move.
- and then mercutio was dead and Hell if it didn’t kill me too. the actor had this aura about him the whole play that made mercutio just feel untouchable. even when he was fighting he made it look like a game, like he just Couldn’t Get Hurt. and when in the end he does get hurt, for me it was just like reading the play for the first time. it was like a new death and it wrenched my heart and i fucking loved it
- tybalt still on his knees in shock and grief while romeo ran at him and grabbed him and started screaming at him oh my God. i know I’ve said about 18 things broke my heart already but this broke my Heart.
i just wanted to share this with you all im sure ill talk about this phenomenal show more but for now this is all my heart can take.
had a bad low blood pressure moment last night and messily asked my partner for saltines and water before realizing i should probably ask for the Blood Pressure Medication I Need To Take. while they went to go grab it though i still had water and crackers so in a daze i took a swig of water but didnt swallow and then tried to cram 2 saltines in my mouth. full of water. in bed. with mouth full of water
//Crystallised books- Alexis Arnold//
Artist Alexis Arnold began a breathtaking art project, in which she crystallised books, as a symbol of what one wants, but cannot have. In these projects, the book's covers are coated in tiny crystal fragments, yet the texts inside are perfectly preserved.
Professor Hidgens theorized this exact scenario 30 years ago. And for the past 27 years he’s been stockpiling the bare essentials for human survival in the event of a world ending cataclysm.
What I am getting at is that I want to see what happened in these 3 years that changed his mind from it being a theory to certain future.
I want to see Hidgens making his way through the jungles only to find ancient ruins right by what looks like an old meteor crash. Bodies, long dead, laying around as if they were arranged in some unique pattern. The wildlife around (birds, bugs, mammals) in a few miles radius somehow seem to always be in perfect pitch with one another. When he tape records his observations he notices a change in his voice, as if it had a playful flowy melody to it. Remarkable! He took an air sample and found an unfamiliar spore like culture in it. It wasn’t large and was very weak, but it was enough to slightly alter the ecosystem around those ruins, have a minor effect on Hidgens’ vocal abilities, and he did not realize it back then, but it altered his brain a bit as well.
Hidgens indeed always had a deep love and passion for musical theater, but unfortunately he thought he could never pursue his passion since his singing was always a little sharp. But after his trip to the jungle, whenever he tried to sing, he sounded like an angel. Hidgens knew it was no coincidence. After he published his paper about his findings, he was approached by agents of what today is PEIP. The paper was never to be seen again, the access to the ruins has been taken over by the agency and his doctorate and resources have been revoked. The only thing he could do now was prepare for the inevitable while writing his own musical (that he can now star in with his new and improved singing voice).

so i was rewatching tgwdlm (again) last night, and one really neat detail that always catches my attention is paul and emma in That Position - namely, far to stage right (or house left), holding each other.
we see this position at three points throughout the play. the first is at beanie's, right before everything completely goes to shit. paul's day has gone crazy. everyone around him is singing and dancing for no reason, so who does he go to? the only person he knows (albeit barely) who also hates musicals: emma. he grabs her and brings her all the way from the counter to stage right, proving that this recurrent position is not a coincidence - he could have just brought her aside by a few steps. while the way he pulls her is a little aggressive, it's only because he's afraid. paul would never hurt emma, and that is reflected in the way he holds her.
paul's hands are placed on emma's upper arm, but gently. this is a position emma could easily back out of at any time. when she does so a few moments later, even though paul is frightened and pleading with her to see what he sees, he lets her back away with no resistance, because even when he is desperate he is not a violent man.
this first time we see the position, paul is only just introducing emma to the idea that the world is becoming a musical. he is aware that what he is describing, while frightening to him, doesn't seem all that scary when described, so he asks emma to "promise me you'll think about the implications."
the next time we see this position is just a few minutes later, after all the shit goes down at beanie's. once they've found a safe place to hide, it finally registers with emma that everything paul was describing was true. and while it didn't sound scary to her at the time, she now realises that the implications were terrifying. and she says as much, grabbing what looks like the front of paul's jacket (in a non violent manner of course. i think it's the front of his jacket but as his back is to the camera it's hard to tell) with the line, "i didn't think about the implications!"
and here, once again, paul places his hands in pretty much the exact same position as earlier. comparing the second photo here with the second photo above, you can see that both times, paul has his four fingers facing forward, with his thumb upwards. his grip is gentle and easy to back away from - only this time, emma doesn't back away until she is startled by bill's entrance. though they are only at the beginning of their journey, paul and emma's shared experience has already brought them closer together. she got him out of beanie's and to a safe spot. now, unlike before, she trusts him.
which brings me to the final time this position is used, at the very end of the musical. i have to say, inevitable is one of my all time favourite endings to a musical due to the amazing acting and chilling reprises.
let's break this down, because there's a couple of times in inevitable this position is used. first, right when paul enters, just before the song starts.
they're standing stage right again, and at first, they grab each other's arms, just like the last couple of times. but then, they go into a hug, and as the opening notes of inevitable sound we realise something is wrong. look at the way he's holding her - where before his grip was comforting and gentle, now he has his arms wrapped around her - not a hug, but a trap. she couldn't let go if she wanted to. and she tries.
when the song starts and paul starts singing, the audience at first laughs. at first, it seems like a sweet, if ironic, victory song. but this only lasts a second at most, as we think about the implications of paul singing. and emma clocks it right away too.
now, "paul" is grabbing emma's hands, forcing her to stay close to him, and when she tries to pull away, he doesn't let her, but grabs her and starts whirling her around.
a few lines later, paul has emma on the other side of the stage, and pulls her back across to stage right whilst singing the line "i'm still the man you trust." this can be read two ways: first, that the alien which has infected paul's mind is appealing to emma's previous trust of paul. second, the popular theory that paul is merely faking being infected, and trying to subtly tell emma that he's still the same man who took her by the shoulders that day. jon matteson has said in a tweet that the writers wanted it to be ambiguous, although he chose to play the line a certain way. he does not, however, specify exactly how he chose to play it, leaving the true nature of the final song up to the audience.
bonus: the final shoulder touch in inevitable. it's the same touch - fingers forward, thumb up - but this time more forceful. he swings her around and she is unable to get away. and this time, the position is flipped - they're standing stage left now, another way in this sequence in which everything is "wrong". just one of many little things i love about this show.
bonus 2 because this show is incredibly detailed:
in join us (and die), while ted and bill are on the other side of the stage, paul and emma are once again standing stage right. if you look closely, you can see the same shoulder touch. and once again, paul is scared but comforting emma, while emma is scared and confused, but she still has paul to lean back on, which just makes the final scene all the more heartbreaking.
tl;dr this show loves its heartbreaking little details. can i dub this the shoulder touch motif? because that's what i'm calling it now.
