Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy creates amazing images of the Solar System, including these astounding closeups of the Sun.
Using a small 5" reflecting telescope in his backyard (plus narrow-pass filters like hydrogen-alpha, which only allow a narrow bandwidth of light through to capture otherwise-invisible surface details), he digitally combines thousands of separate images to create each jaw-dropping finished composite.
Check out his photos, including this mega-huge Sun image, on Instagram here: X
Some inspiration for our fellow amateur astrophotographers and space-based fiction writers!
(Obligatory safety note: Always use a proper solar filter when looking at or photographing the Sun, and never point a telescope at our star without one.)
