In defense of Magne

Now I’ve seen a lot of posts about how Magne’s design is transphobic, and I’m not going to argue, really, but it also doesn’t add up for me. It really does add up for me that a writer who managed to handle one trans character with the proper amount of respect, would do another such a disservice. I really don’t think her depiction was also to make her a joke or invalid, because we see misgendering her treated as a bad thing that casts the character who does that in unsympathetic light (and it’s not because he’s a villain, because we heavily sympathise with other villains in the series).

Magne never got the resources to medically transition. While Tiger, in a supportive environment, money and status, could afford to medically transition (we know he had surgeries in Thailand, canonically), Magne, who came from an unsupportive environment, without much money, and fell into villainy so she can live as who she is... she wouldn’t have had the chance to transition medically. Hell, I find it pretty likely she’s a new-ish villain (as she doesn’t have notoriety, much like most of the LoV, and the heroes knowing her name was considered a surprise), and just recently could start living openly as a woman.

This also playes into the theme of the class divide in the BNHA society, where the powerful are accepted and the weak are cast away. Tiger, who came from a place of strength, is accepted by his peers. Magne, from her place of weakness, could only manage to find support among other outcasts and villains. It’s also very real for our world. The amount of resources a trans person has to transition medically, and how much they “pass”, is often a big factor in how they are treated by cis society.

Anyway I’m not saying that Magne’s design isn’t flawed, and I’m not claiming that she couldn’t have been handled better, but I do think this is an interesting way to look at her.
