Now On View, “Unexpected Light: Works By Young Il Ahn” Presents Abstract Paintings From The Artist’s

Now on view, “Unexpected Light: Works by Young Il Ahn” presents abstract paintings from the artist’s “Water” series inspired by his experience of being lost on the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Santa Monica. In 1983, Ahn was aboard a small fishing boat when he was caught in a fog so dense that he could not see his hands in front of his face; suddenly, the fog cleared, revealing sunlight on the water all around him. In each “Water” painting Ahn attempts to interpret the infinite ways in which light, water, and fog interact on the ocean. From a distance, the paintings appear static, each canvas a flat surface rendered in a single vibrant color. Up close, however, the paintings appear to be shimmering and mosaic-like. “Unexpected Light” will be on view through October 1. #lacma #YoungIlAhn #unexpectedlight #waterseries #detail [Young-Il Ahn, Water BLBP 16 (detail), 2016, Courtesy of the Artist and Susan Baik/ Baik Art, © Young-Il Ahn, photo by Michael Underwood] http://ift.tt/2lm0NKj

You May Be Familiar With Tony Smith’s Monumental Sculpture, “Smoke,” Which Greets Visitors As They

You may be familiar with Tony Smith’s monumental sculpture, “Smoke,” which greets visitors as they enter the Ahmanson Building. Now you can learn more about the artist and his lifelong exploration of patterns found in organic life that led to the massive sculpture in the new exhibition “Tony Smith: Smoke,” on view through July 2. Through approximately 25 objects in all media, the exhibition traces the work’s evolution, beginning with Smith’s early Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired buildings of the 1940s and early 1950s, cellular drawings and paintings from the 1950s, and related sculpture and sketches from the 1960s and early 1970s. #lacma #TonySmith http://ift.tt/2mnGeBX

Now in its final week, “Toba Khedoori” (closing March 19) showcases an array of the artist’s paintings, which frequently depicts architectural forms from distanced perspectives, rendering commonplace objects and spaces familiar yet decontextualized. Catch the exhibition here before it travels to our friends at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), where it will be on view April 21–September 24, 2017. #lacma #TobaKhedoori #contemporaryart [© Toba Khedoori, photo © Fredrik Nilsen] http://ift.tt/2mpGgpy

One Hundred And Five Miles; Twenty-two Cities; Four Counties; One Monumental Sculpture. Over Eleven Nights

One hundred and five miles; twenty-two cities; four counties; one monumental sculpture. Over eleven nights in early 2012, this 340-ton granite megalith made the slow and steady journey from a Riverside County quarry to LACMA’s campus, where it sits atop a 456-foot-long concrete slot, together forming Michael Heizer’s “Levitated Mass.” The sculpture offers visitors a series of visual oppositions: weight and lightness, mass and emptiness, up and down, natural and man-made. In the words of LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director Michael Govan, it “makes the impossible possible.” #lacma #MichaelHeizer #LACMAPlusYou #regram via #@kidfuture_ http://ift.tt/2nO4B8V

The “Room Of The Present” Is An Immersive Installation Featuring Photographic Reproductions, Films,

The “Room of the Present” is an immersive installation featuring photographic reproductions, films, slides, posters, and examples of architecture, theater, and industrial design, including an exhibition copy of László Moholy-Nagy’s kinetic “Light Prop for an Electric Stage” (1930)—a unique, motor-driven light-display apparatus (shown here). A hybrid between exhibition space and work of art, the “Room” was originally conceived around 1930 but realized only in 2009, based on the few existing plans, drawings, and related correspondence the artist left behind. Visit the “Room” as part of the ongoing exhibition, “Moholy-Nagy: Future Present” (on view through June 18). #lacma #MoholyNagy #modernart #regram via @lorene.anderson http://ift.tt/2nPB1AJ

LACMA Wishes A Happy 88th Birthday To Yayoi Kusama. The Artist Described Her ‘Infinity Net’ Paintings

LACMA wishes a happy 88th birthday to Yayoi Kusama. The artist described her ‘Infinity Net’ paintings (like this one) as being “without beginning, end, or center. The entire canvas would be covered by monochromatic nets. This endless repetition caused a kind of dizzy, empty, hypnotic feeling.” Come lose yourself in the infinite at LACMA, Ahmanson Building, Level 2. “No. C.A.9,” 1960. #lacma #YayoiKusama #InfiniteKusama #hbd #regram via @elisyulina http://ift.tt/2mtF3Si

Two New Exhibitions—“Storytelling In Bali: Paintings From The Bateson-Mead Collection” And “Monsoon:

Two new exhibitions—“Storytelling in Bali: Paintings from the Bateson-Mead Collection” and “Monsoon: Indian Paintings of the Rainy Season”—open this Saturday, April 1, in the Ahmanson Building’s South and Southeast Asian galleries. Many of the stories in “Storytelling in Bali” are drawn from epic narratives of Hindu and Buddhist mythology that were transmitted from India in the early Common Era, and subsequently translated into local legends. “Monsoon” explores India’s rainy season and how the rains have long been celebrated in various mythologies, rituals, communal observances, and poetic expressions. Check out both shows this weekend at LACMA!
