“Come on Emily, you can’t die on me today…” the doctor says under her breath, but loudly enough for the nursing staff to hear it, as she pounds into my chest with her forceful compressions. Going as deep into my chest as she can with her soft hands, she pushes the blood around my already expired body. “Damnit, Emily! Breathe already!” She stops and forcefully slams her fist into my sternum with no results before going back to manic compressions. The nurse has already dropped the bag used to ventilate my lungs for the better part of an hour so my head just lays on my cheek, my half open eyes gazing to the left. I am not going to breathe no matter how much she begs me to. But I do enjoy in my dying moments having someone fight for me. To hear her anguish at my senseless death. Her words are comforting. I hope she knows how much it means to me when she finally says “time of death”.
