Tenar <3 my friend promised me a strangegirl protagonist in the Tombs of Atuan and I was not disappointed
i love that your brienne always has braids in her hair
thank you!! when she’s first introduced as having a nest of hair that is where my brain went immediately.. a messy braided updo with hairs poking out. I think it’s also convenient for keeping her hair out of her face <3
hiii your art is so delicious!!! im sorry if youve answered this already but what references do you use for clothing? all of the clothing you draw looks so detailed and accurate. could you give some pointers?
hello I procrastinated answering this bc I don’t feel like I have a very good one but I will try! I am assuming this means accurate as in fabric draping and such and not “historically accurate” bc the clothes I draw are definitely not historically accurate….
basically… scour for references. when you’re making up an outfit it’s very difficult to accurately imagine the way fabric drapes (at least for me) so most of the clothing I draw is a patchwork of several different references. not necessarily even good references. sometimes a cheap modern blouse has the right flowy sleeves and the correct angle of an arm to copy the folds for a completely different garment. look for images with similar fabric weights and textures and frankenstein them together and you can convincingly lay out folds and drapes for a nonexistent piece of clothing.
sorry if that is not very helpful! I don’t feel like any part of my process is that well suited to giving advice U_U
i genuinely GENUINELY haven't seen art as good as urs. i'm so so deeply in love with your asoiaf drawings dear lord they evoke something primal within me
thank you sm!!!! this is so kind <333
I’m extremely normal about the fishing game 👍
Hello :) I really like your earthsea art, can I ask what inspired the fashion style of the characters? The clothes of earthsea aren’t generally described in detail, but I LOVE the way these look, they fit the feeling of the world perfectly.
hi!! tysm!! My Earthsea stuff so far has been mostly vibes based unfortunately, so i have no specific references to point you to… For Ged, I thought I it was important that his clothing be comfortable, practical, and humble but not ragged. he’s a powerful wizard, but he’s not showy, so his robes are colorful, but not opulent. I also considered what would look cool flowing in the wind while sailing on lookfar…
for Tenar, I started with the (obvious) base of the black robes. I figured they should be very basic because they’re mentioned making their own clothes. HOWEVER, Tenar is priestess of the Nameless One and thus higher status than her peers, so I wanted her to have more than just a plain robe. There are some small elements on the trim of her robe, and she has a decorative shawl which takes extra labor to make. even so, her belt is still only a rope. They are not living luxuriously.
I hope that makes sense!! I also was just influenced by what is fun for me to draw, and that happens to be loose and layered clothing ! :)
Hi! I really love your art and I'm getting into doing digital painting myself now. If it's not too much of a bother could you share some tips on your process, and what program + brushes you use? <3
thank you!! I would say my process is not that out of the ordinary but I’m happy to share :)
for the first sketch, I start REALLY loose. comically loose. this pass is just to get the general vibe and composition of the sketch. (going to be using jojen and meera as an example bc this file still has all parts of the process in tact).
then I start pulling LOTS of references and working from them. I start trying to get shapes down accurately enough that I have a solid base to work off. then I can clean them up for the final lines
the only part of my process that I think differs from most is that I’m really terrible with color, so one thing that I learned helps me is to do color comps. i’ll duplicate my line art and then shrink it down until it’s small enough that I can’t focus on details or precision too much and then try and work out color palettes. sometimes the first one works, and sometimes it takes me 3 or 4 recolors, but better for me to do these quick versions than go in blind and hate it at the end. (I unfortunately don’t usually save the ones I don’t use. I wish I could share some options I didn’t go with!) Then I can use my comp as a reference and it’s just a matter of getting the colors in cleanly!
As for programs, I use procreate on an ipad, but for years I used a $60 wacom tablet and clip studio paint that I got on sale. I really think it’s less about the program and more about what’s intuitive for the individual. unless someone tells you to use photoshop. that’s the devil speaking.
lastly here’s some brushes I use! the basics are both default brushes on procreate (maybe slightly altered, but not by much). I make my canvases on the smaller side to get the rough pixelated look from my sketch brush. for patterns, I pull from old illustrations or fabric! a lot of mine came from ivan biliban or similar illustrators. the stamp brushes are super easy to make and really make clothing look lovely imo :) pattern brushes are a little harder but they’re doable with tutorial help
I hope that helps!!
Recently cleaned up some oc portraits so that I could update their lore post for the few people that are interested <3 I'll give the same disclaimer as before that I'm not a master worldbuilder or even a very good writer tbh. these are just my dolls I play with for fun.
anyways long post ahead here is your introductory guide to the characters of fitaly (fake italy) in the early 16th century.
Antonia de' Vespini Antonia is the eldest child of the Vespini family. Though they interact infrequently, she has a tense relationship with Andrea Bernardi, her formal sister's betrothed. When she is wed, she brings Lucia with her to her husband's villa. The marriage lasts roughly 5 years until her husband passes (I haven't worked out from what yet, but it's not particularly integral to the story.) Seeing as they have no children, her husband's family contests her right to retain his properties and she returns to her father's palazzo, Lucia in tow. She is largely reclusive as a widow and prefers to remain in her apartments, despite having more relative freedom than her sisters. Though the two were already on poor terms before her absence, after her marriage and widowhood she and Andrea become openly hostile towards one another. She finds him dismissive and condescending and is suspicious of his behavior around her maid, Lucia. Despite this, there is a brief attempt by her father to offer her hand in marriage to Andrea after the death of her sister Isabella. She wholly refuses to comply and begins spreading nasty (but not entirely untrue, nor undeserved) rumors about Andrea throughout court to deter further pursuits.
Isabella de' Vespini She has been betrothed to Andrea Bernardi since they were both children. She finds him less objectionable than her sister Antonia does, but she is certainly not enamored with him. Isabella is a vivacious and charming girl, but Andrea seems entirely unimpressed by her (though he never says as much.) She dies abruptly at the age of 16 (allegedly after suffering an acute illness, but circumstances are suspect) before she and Andrea are ever wed.
Maddelena de' Vespini Rather meek but sweet. She's not particularly pivotal to the story, but it IS important to note that she too has already been betrothed, hence why Marietta resorts to trying to marry Andrea to her widowed sister.
Paulo de' Vespini Paulo is also not particularly relevant, but he's currently his father's only surviving male heir (thus far), so he's very doted on.
Lorenzo de' Silvis Lorenzo was instrumental in arranging a marriage between his young nephew Andrea and Isabella de' Vespini with the intent that they would wed when they reached maturity. He hosts Andrea more and more frequently as he gets older.
Andrea Bernardi Second son, betrothed to Isabella as a child to secure business ties between their families. Andrea is educated and ambitious but somewhat dour for his age. He largely resides with his uncle Lorenzo as he grows older. He coerces Antonia's maid, Lucia, whom he is infatuated with into entering a relationship with him while at court, but shortly thereafter Antonia is wed and takes Lucia with her. During this time, he is taken under the wing of his future father-in-law Niccolò, who sees his younger self in Andrea's ambition. Several years later, when Lucia returns to the palazzo after the death of Antonia’s husband, he resumes their relationship while Antonia grows ever more resentful of him. Isabella dies before she and Andrea can fulfill their marriage contract. He is in no hurry to find a new match, but his mother proposes that he marry Antonio, the dead Isabella’s older, widowed sister. Niccolò is inclined to agree, but Antonia causes such a fuss about the matter that it's quickly abandoned. Andrea leaves court abruptly, and takes Lucia with him, much to Antonia's dismay. Meanwhile, his mother secures the daughter of a Spanish ambassador to be his wife. The two have a very brief betrothal period before they're wed and Ysabel goes to live with him away from prying eyes.
Ysabel de Torres y Mendoza Ysabel is the daughter of a Spanish ambassador and overall a very reserved and passive girl. She finds herself somewhat isolated outside of Spain. Initially, she is tentatively pleased by her marriage to Andrea— she assumes he is keeping a respectful distance to allow her to acclimate— but it becomes clear over time that he is genuinely disinterested in her, and she has to fight for any scraps of attention from him. He makes no secret of Lucia as their marriage progresses, and young Ysabel chooses to make Lucia the object of her loathing rather than confront her unfaithful husband. Overall, it is an unhappy marriage from the outset. Despite this, she and Andrea have several children together, whom he is similarly uninterested in, except for their sons.
Lucia my most favorite oc... She is Antonia's servant and a notorious flirt and gossip. Though several years older than Andrea, she unwittingly gets his attention and is pressured into a relationship with him when he first arrives at court. Having been particularly unlucky in love thus far, she finds the easy attention she’s able to get from Andrea a refreshing (and deserved) change of pace. However, by the time of Antonia's marriage only a few months later, she's begun to find him immature and temperamental, and is relieved to be out from under his thumb when Antonia takes her away. Her reprieve last roughly 5 years before Antonia's husband dies. Upon their return, Lucia is surprised to find that Andrea even remembers her— even more so that he again pursues her— but she believes he's matured and acquiesces to further relations with him. After Isabella's death and the disastrous marriage negotiations with Antonia, Andrea offers to offers to take Lucia with him away from the palazzo. She accepts, and briefly experiences a honeymoon period where he freely showers her with affection. Unfortunately, the arrival of his new wife complicates matters.
Bartolomea Lucia's mother (and only known relative) and also a servant in the employ of the Vespinis. She claims that Lucia's father was a craftsman who died shortly before Lucia's birth, forcing Bartolomea to find work in the palazzo to support herself and the expected child. The story about her father is 100% not true, but Lucia believes it. Neither she nor her daughter are literate.
I think that’s all for now.. it is hard for me to figure out how to introduce them bc I have a lot of lore backlogged but hopefully everything here makes sense <3
Everytime you post new art i have to look through the old ones again and god!! I notice little details everytime and it's just so good. Anyways I hope you have a nice day
tysm!! that is very kind :) there are drawings I don’t like as much anymore but overall I have had sm fun drawing asoiaf stuff and there are a lot that i DO like which is a win for me 💪 and I feel like I have barely scratched the surface of all there is to draw in the books
