I cannot overstate the importance of local school board elections.

We finally have a progressive supermajority in our district. Here are some things that are going on.

Lunch and breakfast are free for all students, regardless of income. They ask students at wealthier schools that don't federally qualify as an entire school for free lunch to apply for free lunch because it increases federal reimbursement, but they are simply not charging students for lunch or breakfast.

They fired the big corp that was handling lunches (sodexa?) and brought it in house and the selections include vegetarian, kosher/halal, and often local and organic foods. The quality is good. They pay attention to nutrition. My picky kid can usually find something to eat.

The schools are nut free. As the parent of a peanut-allergic kid, I'm grateful.

We're not banning books.

There's no shopping list for back to school because, get this, the district is providing supplies! They ask that kids bring a backpack. My kid's cheeseburger backpack has held up mightily and is still in great shape, so we're good.

Trans kids are protected at the state level, but also at the local level.

They're doing an overhaul of special education with an eye to eliminating ABA. This is a sea change.

Kids get a city bus pass, free.

I have so many feelings. One of my friends is on the school board, and she's been part of this huge shift in priorities. I feel like good things are possible again. This is what free public education should mean.

i will never fucking forgive the community on this site for the years of “ace discourse”. we were being actively hated for our orientations and everyone just treated it like a fucking debate topic or fucking mocked us for being effected by it. it became such a widespread thing to laugh at that even people who were otherwise okay with us were reblogging aphobic memes and getting mad that we “couldn’t take a joke” when we were upset by it.

and today, people who got swept up in aphobic movements look back at that time like “haha, i was such a cringe teen for participating in ace discourse” rather than “i was shitty and bigotted and i sincerely regret it”; a lot of them probably still ARE aphobic but just don’t talk about it anymore because it’s no longer trendy.

I feel a lot of people have moral systems that are completely detached from centering avoiding real harm to real people and are mostly based on completely arbitrary obsessions with symbolic and abstract "wrongs" and gut feelings, and then they join progressive politics and make an absolute fucking mess out of everything with their weird little moralist obsessions that actually don't help improve anybody's life or serve any purpose besides making a few people feel morally superior. This is why for example anti-kink politics went from having a pretense of being about protecting vulnerable women from abusive men to just being very blatantly "if you have ever done kink at all you're ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew".

begging queer kids to read up on princess diana’s involvement with the community. yes, she was a rich, pretty monarch. yes, she died young.

but the reason why queer people love her is because she used her privilege during the aids crisis to advocate for sick queer men, when very few others would - much less someone of her status.

diana spent years advocating for the health and care of queer people with hiv/aids. in 1987, at the height of the epidemic, she opened the first specialist clinic dedicated to treating aids patients (the first clinic of it’s kind in the uk).

she also fought public hysteria by hugging and shaking bare hands with aids patients, at a time when aids was thought to be spread by skin to skin contact. not only that, she visited patients in the clinic regularly and even comforted them through their sickness.

and when queen elizabeth told her to try focusing on “something more pleasant”?

diana ignored her and kept fighting.

and this is only her work towards the aids crisis. she publicly called out the royal family, brought attention to numerous world issues, and was known as an advocate for empathy and kindness. she’s known and loved as the people’s princess for good reason
