Some of my students have asked me where to hide if a shooter shows up at our school. Some of my students are saying that this is why they “don’t want to fucking come to school anyway”. One of my students had a panic attack so severe in the morning while getting dressed that he couldn’t come to school because he was “afraid he’d get shot”.
And here I am, trying to talk these poor high schoolers through it all. I have to talk to them about life and death, and guns and fear, instead of music and art — like I planned to in College. We have to talk through their emotions, their anger, and their despair over how they will never know whether this will be the day it happens or not. I’m trying to be brave, and I’m trying to be strong for them, even though I spent all night last night crying.
The USA needs to fucking do something about this. It’s not fair that these CHILDREN have to worry about their lives being in danger when they should only be worrying about math, science, English, music, art, and history. They should be thinking about Prom and learning what love is like, not texting their parents all day because they’re worried that someone might literally kill them. This is disgusting.
