Usually it was Americans not attending shows because the people were English or the English not attending shows because the people were American.

This sort of posh sorta refined manner of speaking was soon adopted by people in American high society, who fancied themselves a bit of European culture and arts and music and what not.

But since Duke, Pluto, Berenice and Eulalie are all from 1910+ eras, and probably haven’t met a lot of people in high Society in the first place, they all probably associate this accent with actors and performers.
