Extraordinary Story Behind the Photo That Changed the Face of AIDS
In November 1990 LIFE magazine published a photograph of a young man named David Kirby ā his body wasted by AIDS, his gaze locked on something beyond this world ā surrounded by anguished family members as he took his last breaths. The haunting image of Kirby on his death bed, taken by a journalism student named Therese Frare, quickly became the one photograph most powerfully identified with the HIV/AIDS epidemic that, by then, had seen millions of people infected (many of them unknowingly) around the globe.

Chronic illness is so different from āregular illness.ā No one is running medicine and soup over to your house when you say you donāt feel good. No one is running you to the hospital when youāre crumpled up in pain. Doctors donāt run around you ordering immediate tests and skipping lunch to go over your results. Youāre not excused from anything. Youāre just expected to go about your life with way less spoons than everyone else has. If youāre in pain, you hide it, because itās not a rare occurrence. If you need a doctorās appointment, well the next oneās in five weeks at a time/day that you need to cancel all your plans for. And if you canāt make that one, well the next ones in 3 months. Need some tests done? Weāll order one at a time, and theyāll take a few weeks to have a spot open for you. Then a few more weeks to get the results. Medicine?! You donāt need medicine. You get through school/work just fine. Not like weād know what to prescribe you anyway. And not like itād actually help. Have you tried some Advil? Tums? Youāve had this for how many years? You must be used to it. We need to focus on the people coming in with NEW pains. Pains we may actually have a diagnosis for, and not just a coverall name.
Maybe we donāt heal by convincing ourselves that someday, the pain will fade; that weāll return to our former selves and reclaim the life we used to have. Maybe we heal when we accept that itās okay to never go back; when we stop trying to use the broken pieces to rebuild the old picture, and instead, create a new one. Maybe we heal by affirming that even with this pain, we can craft a life that gives us meaning; that even when there are storms that flood our hearts, we can learn how to swim; that when night falls, we can learn how to create our own light. Maybe, it means trusting that no matter how many times we have to recreate ourselves and redirect our path, we will end up where weāre meant to be.
