Because Dylan got back to the severed floor and saw some shit going down and without question threw his body on the line too. Because Lorne was exhausted watching her beloved goats sacrificed to the corporate machine and wasn't willing to stand by and watch Drummond kill one of their own. Because the entire Choreography and Merriment department responded to Helly pleading for help in a scene straight out of Norma Rae

i always think about an AU where maki and mai run away when they're kids and live together no matter how incredibly hard it is because all they needed was each other
it's hard to imagine maki taking the initiative like this rather than buying into the whole "becoming stronger and changing the zen'in family for mai" narrative in canon... if only she knew what mai had really wanted was for them to be miserable together... so in this AU maybe there is a time slip situation where when mai died, maki's mind somehow goes back in time and she knows Exactly what to do (run the fuck away, anything's better than this)
they stay on the run, evading sorcerers and zen'ins. mai constructs yen notes every day. she's the real breadwinner between them but maki doesn't like that mai suffers every time she uses her CT, so she goes out looking for random jobs to do. most times she ends up with morally questionable jobs like beating people up and eventually becomes a hit man with a penchant for offing sorcerers/curse users with bounties, which eventually leads to her chasing a hit on an old woman in the countryside. turns out she's nobara's grandma, which is how maki and mai come into contact again with the main jjk Plot
