“Struggling to keep up?” ... “I was just trying to go at a pace that wouldn’t leave you in the dust!”

A painting for Chapter 21 of @nebrasska-alasska's fanfic, The Secrets In Our Quills. This scene means so much to me and I've had so much fun staring out my inbox waiting for a new chapter every week. Go check out the rest of their writing, their works are unmatched! (Nebrasska I love your writing sm 😭 It's legitimately one of the best contributions to the fandom and inspired me to start drawing again)

Green and Purple's dynamic is one of my favorites actually, because Purple despised Green and vise versa; Green could not stand Purple. Dare I protest that Purple hated Green the most out of the quintet?

From how I interpret it, It all boils down to their contrasting personalities, goals, and beliefs. The two share as many similarities as they do differences, and this brings an interesting duo and an enjoyable relationship as the outcome when finally acknowledged.

When basing Green off a surface-level characterization, he's practically this goody-two-shoes. Great at every obstacle he is up against; He is amazing at fighting, quite an architect, and amazing with animals. Skillful with his fishing rod, always running on his two legs, and has quite this interest in musicals. He is numerous, confident, and extravagant – just as much as he can be absurd, arrogant, self-centered, competitive, and honestly quite cocky and petty. Once he has his mind set to a specific goal, he will do whatever to achieve it. I can respect that!

But I do enjoy my favor on detailing and characteristics. It's up to you how you prefer to perceive it.

I feel as though it's worth crediting Green's forte in combat and parkour as a direct reflection of his established personality and traits. Of course, the entire friend group has this style of analysis sharply ingrained in them, Green isn’t some special guy that stands out in this media, but it's his analysis after all!

Green And Purple's Dynamic Is One Of My Favorites Actually, Because Purple Despised Green And Vise Versa;

There is this defined parkour roll Green does. Officially called a "tumble.” this swift move is a practical cheat for fall damage. When done correctly, it prevents your knees from experiencing Hindenburg on a miniature scale. When not, yeah, your spine and shoulder blades are absolutely done for. Green is, of course, a master at parkour as much as he is cautious of his surroundings and environment with his key of detailing in mind.

He knows when it's appropriate to quit, but he isn’t at all accustomed towards giving up without a fight, or to give up at all. It's definitely not something in his wordstock. In some contexts it’s his strength and confidence depriving off based positive. In more sillier, unserious contexts, he’s just stubborn like that. He's a strong-willed stick. What else can I say?

He is aware of his traits of perfection, and he has absolutely no problem on outwardly flexing these skills. However, conflict rises when these traits become overwhelming. He gives himself way too much credit on validation and attention, and this later develops into an addiction to inevitable pleasure by satisfying those around him for his own ingain; to feel held high. (Influencer arc, baby!)

Don't think it's really Green avam if you don't bring up this utter bond he has with his friends. He really holds them high, and he greatly appreciates their presence. He has this deep, close relationship with each and every one of them, and it rather grows when keeping his specialty of seeing everyone right through their own bounds.

But of course, it’s due to this naturally observant trait that Green inhabits. This allows him to catch everyone off guard when confronted, and it especially comes in handy when up against.. unfortunate situations. But it always comes with good intent.

Green And Purple's Dynamic Is One Of My Favorites Actually, Because Purple Despised Green And Vise Versa;

He just seems perfect, or at the least likable, no? Come on, he's great at just about everything, and he holds this deep love and care for everyone. He has much to go around. His overbearing demeanor is fun, his conflict on being a people-pleaser perfectly compliments his character, his flamboyance and gestures, it's no doubt on why he's quite the fan favorite within the community. It's no doubt on why he's considered "the best" by the AB team themselves.

…which admittedly, isn’t for everyone. Or more appropriately said, isn't particularly for someone in this context.

Purple as a character keeps strictly towards himself, never allowing anyone to tread past this invisible barrier he had set for himself due to this desensitization he developed from his household. Once he has a word of command set for him, he would do whatever to secure it. He really holds a figure of authority valuable, much over anything and everything else.

It’s just the greater influence on how he was raised, and it’s complicated to overcome that. Purple does not quit, he just strategically avoids disappointment.

And funnily enough, (but not at all surprising) he's incredibly anxious. Socially and physically. He is the definition of an awkward wreck if I can put it, but still holds this degree of confidence when finally opposed to a situation of battle. He won't allow his weaknesses to overshadow his favor of combat scenarios after all. That's just not him.

When overwhelmed with negatives, he has this tendency to run away, or to shrink in on himself - like an attempt to disappear from the scene entirely. And this isn't anything new, it's quite frequent and recurring from my standpoint.

Purple has a precise skill in acrobatics, and his elytra perfectly compliments his score. It's why he has such a catering interest towards it. Not at all that he's morally sucky at physical combat; he's incredibly well at combat, always possessing a boxer stance, but in a sense that he's just more keen towards that nice peck of "fresh air", to have just an ounce of control? Who wouldn't like flying around? It’s fun.

That being said, he was made to be a child of someone after all. Or maybe, just to be someone. To be apart of something, to be included?

And neglect is multifaceted, not cartoonishly obvious.

An inconsistency makes children subconsciously mark their caretaker as unreliable, someone who doesn’t meet those needs. It depends how the child perceives their environment overall. It plays a greater role on how they handle these issues, and it reflects on their attachment style.

And It's normal to have different aspects of each quadrant. As the mind is beyond complex, it should only be the case that there are those who won't be beholden to only one attachment styles. When studying an individual, there are so many other factors or psychodynamic theories which may be applied.

Within Orchid—Purple's mom, an Inconsistency of being comforting and attuned towards absent in the next, Purple isn't certain on what to expect, and it shows in how he rather leans from clinging for security towards confiding in himself. This stays pretty outward and prominent throughout the span of the series, but still quite implicit. It's definitely something worth noting when keeping references of Purple as a character, and Purple as a conflict.

And it isn't at all Orchid's fault. That's the most tragic bit for me. She was dealing with her own personal conflict, of course—not in the right headspace. While not wanting to demonize her, being a bystander is morally unjustifiable in these kinds of scenarios.

He never bothers to reach out in search of comfort within someone when distressed, nor is it his initial reaction. He doesn't really expect to be soothed. He self-loathes. Even with an embrace, it takes a bit to acknowledge it upon returning. It’s this independence, and in this context it’s much out of a negative light. Ultimately, he believed his parents' narrative as they're such influential people in his life; sabotaging his own potential from the very fear of failing. And it's quite a common trope if I'm being honest, but I still enjoy it regardless!

Green And Purple's Dynamic Is One Of My Favorites Actually, Because Purple Despised Green And Vise Versa;

He really, really hates accountability, but he knows that it’s a necessity and that it’s the right thing to enact. He wants to do good, but his directions and beliefs overshadow his will to do so. Purple has a strong direction towards approval as it's the only other distraction presence he is familiarized with when up against grief. He avoids it, he huddles that sorrow deep into mind, doing whatever to suppress it.

His notions towards these views are a direct contrast of Green's own and everything he’s familiar with and stands for. He is just plainly not used to it.

Purple never refuses a scenario of combat, but only if it was beneficial for his will to earn validation. He just really seems to hate things that he considers "nonsensical" or an intervention of his bout. It's just annoying, and it makes complete sense for it to be in his perspective. Once his surge of awkwardness from being confronted goes away, he’s more than ready to attack, and he isn’t afraid to do so. He doesn’t hesitate, and he knows when it’s explicitly okay to get serious.

It shows how he reacts and handles Red and Second. Completely 2v1, and he still managed to rock their shit! Just his dad's influence, like father like son am I right?

If you were to ask me, the set plan by King being interrupted was only to be expected and called for.

And it was Green to be that candidate of said interruption, and for me, that's as perfect as you can get towards setting up a conflicted relationship. And that intervention seems to really, stick to Purple.

Green And Purple's Dynamic Is One Of My Favorites Actually, Because Purple Despised Green And Vise Versa;

With that out of the way, Purple, throughout the entire confrontation did not attempt to fight back, not once. His entire goal was to just break free from his grasp and carry out the plan, and Green was just a complete screw-up to this chain of work. He hates these types of people, who generally come off as burdensome and annoying. I mean, why wouldn't he be?

Green And Purple's Dynamic Is One Of My Favorites Actually, Because Purple Despised Green And Vise Versa;

And Green was just as equally infuriated. Purple was nothing more than a coward who would run away from his consequences and do as he’s told. It’s just so not Green’s style or what he's familiarzed with, and it’s hard to become accustomed to those who are generally unlikable. People who don’t exactly try – epecially those who haven't done anything worthy of becoming exactly “likable.”

With such bothersome difficulty, it would make sense for it to be tough to see through Purple’s lens, especially when Green is someone who is essentially sheltered with no experience or knowledge than what he's conditioned to. But with that being said, it just.. isn't Green. Far from it, actually. Green isn’t keen on giving up. That's his style, after all. He wants to understand.

Hell, even when Purple was a presumably lost case, Green still continued on chasing after him. It’s just so.. Green. He’s stubborn but thoughtful. As upset as he is (and as he rightfully should be), he reaches out towards logical common sense when that rush washes over, and he steadily observes.

And in the perspective of Purple, he despises Green, or may I say it can potentially reek from a place of subconscious envy?

Green's relationship with his friends is pretty well highlighted in Purple's mindscape. He's actively aware of their status and bond towards each other, and possibly really did want to reach out towards that. He had a place to belong, a place to feel included. A community to belong. But with his personal conflict of longing validation from an authority figure surpassing his longing for a friend group, he completely discards them. He has his priorities and desires, and it really isn't anything new when studying trauma responses.

Green overal was a repeating highlight in Purple’s mindscape. He’s well aware of how observant he is, and this prompts a small somber moment between the two. Green acknowledges that there’s more to Purple than everyone takes him for. And as sweet as this trait is, it comes off as nothing but a mess to deal with on Purple’s end as he just wants to be left alone with his journey of affirmation, in which he believes he needed. (In which Green isn’t predisposed towards giving.)

Green And Purple's Dynamic Is One Of My Favorites Actually, Because Purple Despised Green And Vise Versa;

Green directly held Purple back towards this accomplishment of his goal with his fishing rod in hand. As mentioned, I believe this was his final straw. King's betrayal better strengthening that proxy. And Purple has an eye of clarity towards that.

And when Purple is in his episode, he confesses everything. There's really nothing to lose when you have already lost so much. Is there? Or at least he thinks he did

While Green does sympathize with Purple's story and his own conflict of being perceived as a “good” or “bad” person because of his actions, he doesn't exactly affirm any of his values, but acknowledges that he still needs to work on himself, and instills in him hope on doing better.

Forgiveness is a broad topic in itself, stopping who he aided and looked up to can be a strong step on reforming a relationship with the gang from there. Though that wasn't the reasoning for Purple's last stand. He's simply endorsed it because he believes it's the right thing to do.

While Green can't exactly speak for his friends, he still offered that scenario and waved away that pressure of how he would be perceived and how he should perceive himself. To just not force such high expectations and standards on himself. That pressure sucks. It really doesn't have the best toll on him if you can't tell.

Not in a way that he's either of the two personas, not in a way that he's both, but that he just sort of.. exists. And that's okay. And with a caring group, he can begin to heal bit by bit on his own time and reflection.

Green And Purple's Dynamic Is One Of My Favorites Actually, Because Purple Despised Green And Vise Versa;

And Green offers that very well-needed comfort. Purple didn't reach out for it of course, but he accepted it and broke down nonetheless, and It's really sweet how the mini Green and Purple notes remain hugging compared to the rest of the gang until they are replaced by the actual embrace between the two.

Green And Purple's Dynamic Is One Of My Favorites Actually, Because Purple Despised Green And Vise Versa;

And it can also be very possible that Green had to be held back by everyone while Purple went on to sacrifice himself considering their rearranged order. Animation error or not, however you chose to perceive it.

I had this stupid hc that Purple used to work for CD Guy during the time span of Orchid's illness to take a load off her shoulders in finances (much to her dismay of it obviously) but no one in the city seemed to partically enjoy the idea of child labor as one would, but CD Guy took this as an opportunity and said "ykw hell yeah"

He would give Purp encouragement talks on what makes a great cooperate management, how to market, gaslighting your customers, you know - all the good stuff. And luckily enough for Purple, none of the vents went out in vain because he used the tactics and strategies for his stupid trade buisness in the village because you know, con artists make con artistsss (and because I refuse to believe he went from a sad runaway orphan to a manipulative little shit so suddenly, he must have had someone at least because that's a rough transition,,,)

Animation vs. Minecraft: The Problem with Meta storytelling

With the continued growth of the Animator vs. Animation Fandom alongside the recent release of Animator vs. Animation 11, I've started to see more and more people come out the woodworks to criticize the problems with Alan's storytelling. Whether it be his overuse of sad character backstories, or the harmful implications that arise from how its only two female characters are portrayed, and while those are all valid concerns, the biggest issue I have with the series arises from something far more systemic than simply the characters itself, and it all starts with this.

Animation Vs. Minecraft: The Problem With Meta Storytelling

This right here is a screenshot from the 30th episode of the Animation vs. Minecraft Shorts episode "The King", specifically the moment when King Orange discovers the existence of the Color Gang.

Now, you can say a lot about how King Orange's backstory is kind of an Ass Pull from a storytelling perspective, but I'm not focusing on that today. Rather the thing I want to focus on is what this scene means for the Beckerverse and, more importantly, how this is possibly one of the worst uses of meta storytelling I have ever seen.

To give context for those unaware. What you're seeing here is a scene where, after failing to make any progress finding the Minecraft Game Icon that he's looking for, King Orange stumbles across a monitor playing the very first Animation vs. Minecraft episode. Specifically it shows the moments where the Second Coming and his friends are using the game icon.

This right here is how King Orange discovers not only the existence of the stick gang, but also the fact that they have the thing that he is looking for, which leads him to putting up wanted posters for the main five in hopes of someone knowing who they are, said action leading to Purple and King Orange meeting for the very first time.

Animation Vs. Minecraft: The Problem With Meta Storytelling

Basically, had it not been for King Orange stumbling upon this computer playing the very first Animation vs. Minecraft episode, literally none of Season 3 would've happened.

Now you might be asking yourself, what exactly is the problem with this? So what if these videos exist both in and out of universe? This is far from the first work of fiction that will utilize elements of meta to tell their story, and you would be correct in saying this. But here's the problem with.

Despite what this episode would lead you to believe, Alan's videos do not exist in-universe, as a matter of fact, I'd argue that Alan's entire channel is not an in-universe entity. How do I know this?

Animation Vs. Minecraft: The Problem With Meta Storytelling

What you're seeing here is a scene from the second episode of the third season of Animator vs. Animation entitled "The Box". In this scene, the Second Coming has just discovered the events of the Showdown, more specifically, the moment he goes all Deus Ex Machina on Dark and completely obliterates him using powers that he... basically pulled out of his ass if I'm being honest here.

Animation Vs. Minecraft: The Problem With Meta Storytelling

(Here's a screenshot of what happened in that episode for context)

This moment is pretty clearly established as Second finding out about his powers for the first time. It's pretty clear that he had no idea he even did this and this is how he learns about what happened in that episode.

But, if you've been following what I've been saying at this point, you might realize a flaw with this. That being how on Earth does Second not know this?

With how AvM Episode 30 establishes these videos as existing in-universe, surely the events of The Showdown would also be documented correct? How does Second not know that he went sicko mode on Dark when he has access to said information through the internet?

Simple really, The Showdown does not exist as a video in-universe. The events of that video are not documented. Second can't possibly know this because in his world, because this video doesn't exist.

Throughout every single AvA/M episode that has been posted, not once have the characters ever established to know that they're in a YouTube video or that they have access to videos of their own adventures.

This becomes even more cut and dry in the Influencer Arc. Where after Green creates a YouTube channel and begins interacting with commenters. I can't find the exact reply where he says this, but I do recall him being asked about the events of Showdown and having no idea what the comment talking about.

Regardless of if it is acknowledged or not. It's pretty clear that Alan's YouTube channel, the one we all know and love, does not exist in this universe. Not only is it never brought up as a prominent element of in-universe Alan's characterization, but none of the characters seem to have access to knowledge outside of what they themselves experience in the episodes they appear in, which is honestly for the better. It prevents plotholes like the one I mentioned above about how Second doesn't know about what he did in Showdown because he has no recollection of what he did while he was awakened.

Animation Vs. Minecraft: The Problem With Meta Storytelling

Now... with the knowledge that the AvA/M episodes aren't supposed to exist in-universe... can you see the problem with this scene?

In this one moment alone, Alan has singlehandedly shattered what seemed like a pretty comfortable boundary. He has established that actually, these videos do exist in-universe and are important to the AvA/M storyline.

This single scene here raises so many questions, none of which really have sensible answers.

How did this video even end up on this monitor? Who was recording it? None of this would be a problem if this series hadn't already established that none of these aren't supposed to be viewed as in-universe YouTube videos that the characters can go back to. That's a boundary that, in my opinion, was pretty clearly set with the existence of AvA Season 3 because if it wasn't, how on Earth is Second only finding out about his powers now?! Has Alan just been keeping the fact that all of their experiences are recorded a secret?

But that in it of itself also doesn't make sense, because all of the events of AvM happen without Alan's involvement. What is he just recording his computer 24/7? Why?

It makes absolutely no sense for Alan's channel to exist in-universe because that would create a metric fuckton of plotholes, and the thing is, I think Alan knows this. I think he knows that making these videos something that occur in-universe can easily break everything, which is why his YouTube channel and videos are never actually acknowledged as an important narrative piece.

Now, you might argue and say that this isn't actually the first time Alan has done something like this. We also see this happen in the Showdown.

Animation Vs. Minecraft: The Problem With Meta Storytelling

Here, we can see, clear as day, Chosen and Dark fighting on a Desktop that is not only playing the exact video they are currently in, but also shows Alan's other animations in the sidebar. So if AvM appearing as a video in episode 30 is such a problem, why isn't this?

Simple really. This scene is not important to the overall narrative. In-universe this is just one of the many areas that Chosen and Dark fight in and it only lasts a few seconds. It's pretty clear to me that this isn't actually meant to canonize Alan's YouTube Channel and videos as much as it is just a neat little visual gag. It is not meant to be taken as some sort of massive lore reveal and is literally never acknowledged beyond those few seconds of fighting.

This same logic also applies to Animation vs. YouTube. Yes, Alan's YouTube account is seen here and Second and Green do stumble upon the first Animator vs. Animation, but again.

Animation Vs. Minecraft: The Problem With Meta Storytelling

This moment is not established as a serious story moment, it's just a fun little reference that is quickly glossed over because you aren't supposed to think about it too hard. It has no bearing on the lore of the AvA universe, it's just there as a cheeky moment of the series acknowledging what it is while not having it play any part in the story itself.

Animation Vs. Minecraft: The Problem With Meta Storytelling

This moment however, cannot simply be dismissed as a fun little reference, because it is literally the entire setup for how King Orange discovers the existence of the Color Gang, which inadvertently leads to him meeting Purple, thus leading to the events of AvM Season 3. The first Animation vs. Minecraft being a in-universe YouTube video is a crucial aspect of this story because without it it wouldn't have the pieces necessary for the rest of the season to function.

This is such a clumsy use of meta storytelling because it now establishes a prescient that all of the AvA/M episodes, or at the very least, the first AvM are in fact in-universe YouTube videos that anyone can watch. But if that's the case then how does Second not know abotu his powers? How do literally none of the characters know about these in-universe events when they apparently have access to videos that show said events from a third person perspective?

Perhaps you could argue that what we're seeing here is actually footage that Rocket Corp was secretly recording in order to get information on Alan. I mean, the monitor does have the Rocket Corp logo on it. So perhaps they had been secretly recording Alan's PC the whole time...

Except that doesn't make any fucking sense either.

Animation Vs. Minecraft: The Problem With Meta Storytelling

Going back to the Box for a second, beyond Victim beating the shit out of Chosen for the sake of vengeance, he was also trying to pry Alan's location out of him. He wants to know where Alan is so that he can take his revenge, which tells us that he doesn't actually know the location of Alan's desktop. So you can't possibly say he was secretly recording footage of Alan's computer the whole time when in order to do that, he'd have to first know where Alan's computer actually is, which he doesn't.

So basically, no matter what way you dice it, there is no feasible explanation for how this...

Animation Vs. Minecraft: The Problem With Meta Storytelling

makes any sort of canonical sense. It can't be the doings of Rocket Corp, and if Alan's channel and by proxy all of his animations are in-universe YouTube videos, then moments like the Second Coming discovering his powers for the first time in AvA Season 3 don't make any sense.

To me, it's pretty clear that Alan inserted King Orange finding out about the Color Gang through the first AvM video with very little forethought as to what this would mean for his universe. He tried sneaking in a self-reference and ended up creating massive plotholes that are very hard to dig himself out of. This right here is an example of what happens when you decide to insert elements of metafiction into your work when you don't actually want it to be a metafiction.

Alan wanted to have his cake and eat it too. He wanted to add elments of fourth wall breaking into his story without actually wanting to go the full mile. He wants to simultaneously write a story where his YouTube channel and the fact these are all videos that people can watch have no bearing on the story itself... while also making it so said videos are a crucial element of the plot. Perhaps something like this could've worked with better execution, but as it stands this is just incredibly sloppy storytelling and shows me that, at least with AvM Season 3, Alan didn't actually have a proper boundary for how he was going to incorporate meta elements without them completely destroying the foundation of his story in the process.

Let this be a lesson in meta storytelling. You need to set boundaries so that you don't break anything. I should note that Second finding out about his powers occured after the events of AvM Season 3. Which tells me that Alan himself probably realized the mistake he made in doing what he did and is going to try much harder in the future to separate the reality of our world, and the fictional narrative he is looking to create.

Begging everyone to be normal when both LN3 and REANIMAL releases because I know that no matter what people are going to be nasty af to the LN3 team.

It sucks because the people making LN3 obviously have a really good grasp of the themes and concepts as seen from TSON, but since super massive games had to lay off a massive portion of their employees, I feel like they’re not having a great time

Just please remember that if either game doesn’t meet expectations the people who worked on them are (probably) human and want to make the best product possible
