I'll take a quiet life
A handshake of carbon monoxide

And no alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
A shot from Safe (1995) of Carol White, played by Julianne Moore, in her suburban living room, holding a glass of milk. She is centered in frame, and stares blankly into camera
THE SUBURBS DREAM of violence. Asleep in their drowsy
villas, sheltered by benevolent shopping malls, they wait
patiently for the nightmares that will wake them into a
more passionate world.
A shot from Blue Velvet. A man lays, collapsed, on his lawn. His hose is still running; a dog has climbed on him to drink from it. A child with a lollypop wanders through the gate
And you may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"
And you may ask yourself,
"Where is that large automobile?"
And you may tell yourself,
"This is not my beautiful house"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful wife"
A shot from Little Shop of Horrors of a house on a white lawn against a blue sky. The scene has a sense of artificiality about it - the lighting is all wrong, the sky like a painted backdrop. Seymour and Audrey, in a suit and wedding dress respectively, stand in the doorframe.
I think the traditional preoccupations of cosmic horror are ultimately
charming and quaint in comparison to that endless atrophy
wouldn't it be a relief to gaze into the maw of an eldritch god once,
confirm the truth of existence, and lose your mind entirely?
At least that'd have a sense of resolution to it. At least then you
could stop pretending that everything was fine.
A shot from Vivarium. Rows and rows of identical green houses. On the roof the center one, arranged sheets spell out "HELP"
So we were lying in bed afterwards
And she asked me
What made me frightened
And I said...
I'm frightened of Belgian Chocolates
I'm frightened of potpourri
I'm frightened of James Dean posters
I'm, I'm frightened of 26" screens
I'm frightened of, of remote control
I'm frightened of endowment plans
I'm, I'm frightened of figurines
Ow!
I'm frightened of evenings in the Brincliffe Oaks

A shot from the Truman Show. Truman, played by Jim Carrey, climbs a set of stairs against a wall. Both the stairs and wall are painted like a blue sky with clouds.
Murray and I extended the range of our contemplative
walks. In town one day he went into small embarrassed
raptures over diagonal parking. There was a charm and a
native sense to the rows of slanted vehicles. This form of
parking was an indispensable part of the American
townscape, even when the cars were foreign-made. The
arrangement was not only practical but avoided
confrontation, the sexual assault motif of front-to-back
parking in teeming city streets.
Murray says it is possible to be homesick for a place
even when you are there.
Three panels from the comic Supergod.

The first panel shows a dove flying above a home.

The second, the dove crashing into the dome of the sky, revealed to be artificial. bubbles read: AN UNDERGROUND
AMERICAN SMALL-TOWN HEAVEN. THE KIND OF
PLACE AN ALL-AMERICAN DEADMAN WOULD HOPE AND PRAY TO FETCH UP IN.

The third panel, a white, middle-aged man stands in a pilot's uniform, drinking a beer. Bubbles read: I LIKE TO IMAGINE HIM THERE BY HIS LITTLE PICKET FENCE IN FRONT OF HIS LITTLE HOUSE, BREATHING IN THE AIR- CONDITIONING OF HIS LITTLE HEAVEN. NEVER QUESTIONING HIS EXISTING WITHOUT EATING, DRINKING OR SLEEPING, BECAUSE HE THINKS HE'S DEAD. PERHAPS HE THINKS OF THE DAY HE VISITED EARTH.
But I don't think so. But I think about it. And I think, well, I can't be. Because I'm like
you, I kinda look at the big long life ahead of me that stretches out forever and
disappears. And I get scared. And I think, "this can't be Heaven if I'm getting scared,
right?"
And then I think, "maybe I am in Heaven, and Heaven is scary."
A photograph of a 70s underground Cold War bunker in Las Vegas. It features an imitation of an outdoor suburban home, complete with painted backdrop and fake trees, cut off by the ceiling.
Ask yourself: is there something sinister in moralism?
And then answer: no. God is in his heaven. Everything is
normal on Earth.

Seven(ish) Sentence Sunday

Seven(ish) Sentence Sunday

Jumping on the open tag from @anincompletelist and @ssmtskw 💖

I’ve had some stoned!firstprince brainrot lately. Slowly put surely, it’s coming to fruition.

Henry dumbly takes Alex’s outstretched hand, and does not notice how the cool metal of the rings hugging Alex’s fingers feels along his clammy digits. He’s nodding his head, sure he looks like a fawn caught in high beams.

Henry looks into Alex’s eyes. They’re a smoldering caramel hue encompassed by rows of lashes, lined with something dark and smudged at the edges. His smile is an intoxicating mix of something coy, telling you in no uncertain terms that Alex knows something you don’t, edged with a kind of child-like innocence. A heady balance of sin and absolution, tied together in the middle. And through it all, there’s that cut of silver; that bloody ring that Henry is close enough now to see that Alex pushes his tongue against, rolling the metal from the inside of his lip.

a no pressure tag for my beloveds @affectionatelyrs @inexplicablymine @happiness-of-the-pursuit @hgejfmw-hgejhsf 💖

WIP Wednesday Word Search!

Thanks for the tag in this one, babies. @read-and-write- @firenati0n @songliili @kiwiana-writes @rockyroadkylers @gayrootvegetable and @hgejfmw-hgejhsf! 💗 Also: appreciation post for my friends who endlessly tag me in these games/challenges even though I'm not the most active and consistent person on this platform. I love you all.

RULES: use this generator to generate three random words (or however many you'd like to do!) and share the lines where they show up in your WIPs!

The words I got were acquaintance, monk, and challenge.

acquaintance - Exes to What? AU

There’s a bunch of classmates, celebrities, Nora posting a photo dump about their weekly Austen-binge with June popping in every so often in the slides. Pez in another outfit that never fails to fill Alex with awe; they’re the most stylish person he probably knows, and that’s saying something with his revolving door of acquaintances and friends. Ellen with her recent campaign publicity pictures. His dad doesn’t have instagram, but every now and then Oscar’s face shows up on news outlets as the current-seating senator of California. And then, unmistakably enough to Alex’s eyes, there’s also Henry.

monk - ATLA AU

Alex was already in the Avatar State, and finally looking around the room — littered with Fire Nation army uniforms and the remains of a monk who clearly meant something to Alex and June — it's not hard to understand why.

challenge - fake fratboy!Alex who's actually just an animal shelter volunteer AU

So Henry doesn't ask Alex where he goes or why he has new cuts on his hands or what he gets up to whenever he's not in school — only looks at him as if all the burning questions he wants to send Alex's way was his newfound telepathic skill. Does so in the next few days because he can't just let go of things like that, and ultimately only stops when Alex finally shoots back a quizzical look at him. He doesn't look angry, per se, but the littlest hint of a challenge does start resting on his eyebrows whenever he spares Henry a glance.

I combined both games so I'm not sure who to tag that hasn't done it yet but if you already did, take this as a round two I guess the word search is FUN. @blairwaldcrf @later-2-dae @dragonflylady77 @leojfitz @14carrotghoul @matherines @44whispers @movetoheavens @mudbloodpotter05 @happiness-of-the-pursuit @inexplicablymine @user-anakin @littlemisskittentoes

i've come to realize there are only two kinds of tragedies: preventable and inevitable. preventable tragedies are the kind where everything could have maybe worked out if only. if only romeo had gotten the second letter. if only juliet had woken up earlier. if only creon had changed his mind about antigone sooner. if only orpheus hadn't turned around.

inevitable tragedies are the kind where everything was always going to end terribly. of course macbeth gets deposed, he murdered his way to the throne. of course oedipus goes mad, he married his own mother. of course achilles dies in the war, he had to fulfill the prophecy in order to avenge his lover.

both kinds have their merits. the first is more emotionally impactful, letting the audience cling to hope until the very end, when it's snatched away all at once leaving nothing but a void. the second is more thematically resonant, tracking an inherent fatal flaw in its hero to a natural and understandable conclusion, making it abundantly clear why everything has to happen the way it does.

RWRB New Year's Gift Exchange!

Had the absolute honor to write for @raysletters' prompts in this event. I hope it's up to par, and a good read. Hehe.

Three prompts were given, but I went with this and put my own twist into it: Henry and Alex don't know each other, except they end up fake-dating for the chance to buy their favorite pastry at their local coffee shop, who is apparently now selling said pastry ONLY on a promo combo for couples.

This guy, Henry, Alex remembers hearing that earlier, was now widening his eyes in bits while his mouth continued saying words Alex isn't quite registering at the moment. Alex is almost convinced he could watch and hear this man talk forever and he’d never get tired of it. “Would you want to be my fake boyfriend then?” Those words register to Alex perfectly. “Do I look gay to you?” Is the first thing Alex ever says back to Henry.

Once again, thanks for setting this up, @rwrbnygiftexchange! Happy new year to you too! 🫶

Seven Sentence Sunday!

Happy Sunday everyone! And thank you for the tags @happiness-of-the-pursuit, @littlemisskittentoes, and @blairwaldcrf! 💙

Here's a snippet from my eSports AU I'm working on that I really need to get back to, one of these days. The game is Valorant (because I'm a degenerate, stay with me here) and Alex and Henry play on opposing pro teams. 😁

Having your team's marketing and PR manager be your sister is a funny concept to Alex. On one hand, he's able to talk shit with her about the games and not have to explain the context, but he also feels weird having her go through his accounts during social media checkups every other month on the other. He'd feel a lot better about it if it were someone he didn't grow up with. “Nice try, but you’re dreaming big if you think you can draft statements for me lil bit.” “I can make a mean notes app apology, you know,” Alex proudly states, pointedly ignoring the disagreement that immediately comes. June scrunches her nose at him, “A point in time I hope we never reach.” There’s laughter from his team, who all receive Raf's embrace with delight.

I shall now be tagging you people in return (with absolutely no pressure, as always): @read-and-write-, @inexplicablymine, @kiwiana-writes, @44whispers, @14carrotghoul, @affectionatelyrs, @rockyroadkylers, @treluna4, @user-anakin, @movetoheavens, @hypnostheory, and anyone else who comes across this post! (Am I allowed to re-tag those who tagged me? Because if yes, all three of you too.)

Seven(ish) Sentence Sunday!

seven(ish) sentence sunday!

this past week and a half i’ve been in SUCH a weird headspace for writing— falling into imposter syndrome, comparing my work to others, just generally feeling stuck. but last night i was finally able to put pet to paper and be happy with what came out!

thank you SO much for the tags @kiwiana-writes and @hgejfmw-hgejhsf !

have some kensington divergence angst 😌

Loving Henry was like that.

Like he’d suddenly been able to see the world around him in high definition. Like these pieces of himself that had always been muffled and far away were suddenly at his fingertips, accessible and beckoning. Like his body was suddenly mapped entirely anew—nerve endings attuned to the electricity of Henry’s touch, fingers trained to slot perfectly against Henry’s own, or against the dip of his waist.

Alex came alive with it, ready to take the world between his teeth and savor every morsel of it. Smiling brighter, laughing louder, feeling more.

Loving Henry had awoken something in him.

Loving Henry had almost killed him.

no pressure tagging so many lovelies! @affectionatelyrs @inexplicablymine @read-and-write- @happiness-of-the-pursuit @ssmtskw @firenati0n @leaves-of-laurelin @wordsofhoneydew @anincompletelist @rockyroadkylers @mainstreamelectricalparade @gayrootvegetable @piratefalls @princehgejfmw @magicandarchery @leojfitz
