Hi!! Do you have any advice for a physics student in her first year?
i’m also a first year physics student and only started just over four weeks ago so i’m kinda limited in advice but i hope some of this stuff helps!
at the moment the best advice i can think of is to stay on top of your work by:
not doing your assignments last minute
showing up for lectures when you can instead of watching them online
going over your notes and tutorial questions daily and really trying to understand the content/methods
asking for help, even if it seems like a dumb question it’s better than getting stuck and falling behind. plus professors are normally always happy to help no matter what
buy a good graphing calculator, your phone isn’t gonna cut it for most of the material
seeing the university psychologist if you’re feeling stressed/down. physics is one of those topics where everything is really full on and everyone around you seems like a genuis which can really impact your mental health after a while
going through tons of example questions for practice then finding what you struggle with the most so you can specifically work/get extra help in that area
buying and reading some good physics/math books and textbooks. i found that reading certain books have helped me understand the content in class better (shoot me a message if u want recommendations but otherwise you can just google/goodreads some popular ones)
lastly, this seems like a no brainer but go to bed at a reasonable hour and get enough sleep on the nights before you have class. speaking from experience, math is really hard to do and take in when you’re running on three hours of sleep

some days, you're a goddess of productivity; others, it takes you two hours to read one article and do one page of notes. be kind to yourself.
bonus picture of my favorite distraction, who i had to kick out of my room because he kept playing with the papers on my desk while i was working.

My room has become a tiny jungle and I love it so much :-)
celling my soul
being really fast at math when you write it out, but taking 62.476 seconds to do 3 x 8 when someone asks you
you either hate odd numbers or you love them and this is causes great division of math nerds
teachers start teaching on the first day and assign homework
working with chemicals is only fun if it a) explodes, b) requires a bunsen burner, or c) turns a pretty color (like pink)
catching yourself using math in the real world and thinking “oh my god *insert 2nd grade teacher’s name here* was right”
dad jokes
not knowing you have a favorite animal until the existence of the water bear is made known in biology
getting excited when you can use a calculator
realizing that using a calculator means the test questions will be harder
one of your parents is good at math/science and the other is not
“i’m cold” “go stand in the corner, it’s about 90 degrees”
the textbooks are larger than any other subject
there’s always one historic figure in the subject that feels like a favorite uncle/aunt even though they’ve been dead for 105 years
the teachers don’t go in order of the chapters so you never know what to expect when you walk into class
there’s so many quizzes that you could fail three of them and get a solid A+ anyway
feel free to add more lol
some calculus notes!! ive been v v confused with some of the topic at hand, but working hard at trying to improve that! any progress is still progress

I was one of the first ones in the library this morning and it felt so surreal
ft. fun organic chem rxns and messy nail polish 🙈
one of the most important things ive learned from upper level biology education so far is that dna isnt the god-like all-powerful beacon of similarity between all living beings on the face of the earth as high school science textbooks will lead u to believe but actually is, in fact, the molecular equivalent of a smoldering dumpster fire that’s in a constant state of chaos and cellular scandal like some highlights:
-the parts of dna that just casually detach on a physical level from the main strand, do some sick skateboard tricks in the cytoplasm, and land somewhere else with 43552342 copies
-the parts that would do A Thing if they wern’t physically spooled up so tightly that the Make Thing Happen machinery couldnt get to them
-the dna thats in ur mitochondria bc the mitochondria used to be a bacteria that our bigger, buffer cellular ancestors just vored in the primordial ooze
-the dna that’s in chloroplasts in plants for the same reason
-rna….bitches be crazy like what is she gonna do next?? o she gonna act like a protein now and do shit?? im on the edge of my seat
-sometimes u just gotta make more chromosomes man like sometimes u just be hanging out and u gotta make ur genome 64 sizes larger and then change ur mind only 100,000 years later and delete half of it and thats just how it is on this bitch of an earth
-random shit from like 5 BCE is just casually left over everywhere like no susan i told u to leave that gene alone we might need it to fight dinosaurs again u just never know!!!!!
dna is earth’s biggest and brightest train wreck and honestly i wouldnt trust a dna molecule to water my plants let alone run my body but here we fucking are

got the day off and i am joyous.
twitter - 99% stan twitter vocab, always shouting random things, likes drama just for the hell of it, is somehow always fighting someone???, holds grudges, sometimes has soft and wholesome moments, records everything
tumblr - pretty chill, can do a little bit of everything, organized, seems innocent but probably has the dirtiest mind out there, supportive!!, artistically talented like damn, reads (and sometimes writes) fan fic
instagram - naturally gifted at makeup like james charles who????, aesthetic phone case and laptop, has kinda messy yet organized notes, is always out of the house, spends lots of time with friends, has the best fashion sense out there
facebook - an oldie but a goodie, always complaining of achy joints and back pain, tries to spice up their life, values friends and family, in a lot of different friend groups, will send memes at 1am, lowkey a conspiracy theorist
snapchat - has short bursts of energy throughout the day, accidentally ghosts people because they’re not the best at texting, likes to record everything too, really organized and color codes everything, has hella friends
vsco - super aesthetic photographer, absolutely loves nature and wants to live in it, will do anything for a good photo, their insta bio probably says “why capture the moment when you can live in it”, either way they’re really artsy
reddit - definitely believes in aliens and that robots will take over the world, asks questions that lead to existential crises, gives the best advice ever, can be a wholesome bean, very spontaneous
what’s app - loves to talk, public speaking is their forte, probably the most extroverted person out there, will also send memes at 2am, loves learning new languages and could probably speak more than one, uses emojis when texting
This manuscript is a collection of Latin poetry and prose, consisting of mostly classical sources, but it also features some medieval works. It contains some marginal and interlinear notes and corrections in various near-contemporary hands, and some short marginal poems in red in a different hand, along with some commentary arranged in geometric patterns in the margins.
It was written in Italy, around 1471 CE.

going over my basic math notes and rewatching lectuers today with a cup of coffee. then went through my physics notes and tutorial questions on kinetic energy and force to prepare myself for next week. first week of uni is officially done!
Some motivation from the doctor.

every time i come across a uni/college tips post on tumblr i always soon come to realize that it's so america-centered and a lot of the tips don't apply to the way universities are in a lot of other countries, and that's just further proof that we need more studyblrs from all over the world and all kinds of institutions! it's always nice to hear about the way school systems are in other countries but also to find people who are going through a very similar education experience as you are!!

Statistics notes!!! Very helpful with the terms, not very much on the actual counting and computing.
I’m currently working on a July bujo spread, which is another carat-y thing :) so I hope y'all look forward to that
edit: new post here !
