Happy birthday, David Ogden Stiers (1942 - 2018), M*A*S*H’s Major Charles Emerson Winchester III
Just off my most recent M*A*S*H watch through, and as the Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen anniversary was not too long ago, I wanted to do my own little tribute.
Charles and Father Mulcahy are character who are written very differently, but both rely on music (in their own ways) to keep their sanity throughout the war. And in the end, they both lose their connection to it in different ways. After Charles works with the Korean POW musicians on the Mozart quintet (pictured), and they are killed, the safety of his connection to music is shattered, and all he can think about when listening is the violence and bloodshed. This is explicitly addressed in the finale.
However, Father Mulcahy’s loss is not. Yes, they address his going deaf after the explosion, but throughout the entire show he is shown playing the piano, singing, writing war songs. His connection to music is much less emphasized, but it persists through the entire series, and although he may not be a technical prodigy, it brings him joy. And then he loses it, along with the ability to take confessions, and a number of other facets of his job and life that gave him meaning and brought him comfort. Earlier in the show, during a particularly difficult moment, he is consoled by his colleagues performing Dona Nobis Pacem (also pictured). After he loses his hearing, he begins to question God. “Are you Deaf too?” I think this shaken faith and may have festered into an anger that contributed to his problems after the war (he was shown struggling in AfterMASH).
Anyways! Enjoy my angst fest (also I am VERY open to requests, especially for this show rn)

sorry the blood and guts, they just spilled out a bit, bj will be fine i promise but got my paints and inks out, a wee bit of gore as a treat
some gfa related inspo to what and why under read more teehee
like what if in gfa shit went sideways last minute? when hawk is back and bj returns and peace is declared? during that short period of peace and everyone leaving a lonely unexploded bomb/mortar hits the camp and splintering wood and metals just cuts bj's stomach open? like he almost got away but the war still got him and now it seems like he's dying and as everyone is trying to get bj into surgery? bj just asks hawk to forgive him bc he's leaving hawk again but at least this time he gets to say goodbye and he then asks hawk to hold him (:
(dont worry, im a big baby who cant kill his old man blorbos, so bj would survive bc he is literally dying next to/in the arms of some very good surgeons and nurses and then he and hawk get to spend some quality time in tokyo before going to san fran)
i love me some sad shit w a happy ending (:
It wasn't invited, really. It was more like, "Come live with me and be my love and we will all the pleasures prove."
Good heavens. That is me.

BJ is the most character to put in situations... But yes, before you ask, these painting rituals are intricate and charged with so much thoughts and headcanons which could mean nothing (:
