I bet Lyra learnt to wear makeup when she started attending that girls’ school. I bet she made lots of female friends, and they taught her to do pretty things with her hair, and she watched them wear pretty clothes and gradually started to ask them for advice on how to wear pretty clothes.

I bet she found learning to be feminine just as hard as learning to read the aletheometer. And I bet she tried to be scornful at the start, out of habit, but when she was lonely and sad at night a girl came over to comfort her and they became close friends and Lyra would come to realise that some of the friends she had made at that school were people she would gladly fight and kill to protect. And I bet she saw that they weren’t any good at fighting with their fists like she was, but that they were fighting to protect her just as hard, taking care of her when she was sad and lonely over such odd things, and defending her from cruel people who would mock her for her spotty knowledge and odd opinions.

And I bet she became an activist for all sorts of things as well as being a renowned scientist. I just. I have a lot of feelings about Susie Pevensie and Jane Darling and all the fantasy queens who lost their kingdoms, and I feel like Lyra’s definitely one of them, one of the ones who realised that in her own world things were much harder and more difficult and she couldn’t have power in all the same ways she used to, but she learnt to use the power that was there for her, and she used it wonderfully.

A different perspective

“humanity is inherently selfish and bad” bbbrrrghuhjfkg. humanity is seeing a stranger’s grocery bag break open on the sidewalk and harvesting fruits and veggies from the branch-like cracks of the asphalt for them, just because you can. humanity is helping a lost child find their mother on a crowded beach, looking for the ladybug-patterned parasol with their hummingbird-small hand in yours. it’s an elder’s fingers wrapped around your arm as you help them up the stairs because the elevator is broken, and feeling like you’re doing exactly what you’re supposed to be doing, like this is what you would’ve been doing had you been alive centuries or even millennia ago. there will always be a heavily pregnant woman who will smile at your when you give up your seat, a nice blind man in the fruit aisle who will ask you to please pick the riper plantain for him, a tired cashier whose face will light up when you compliment their tattoo sleeve. humanity is connection

breaking off a piece of bread and handing it to someone

putting the weight of a basket on your hip or head

eating nuts or berries while hunched over close to the ground

seeing something startling just out of your line of sight and very quickly stepping or leaping on to a larger object to get a better view

cupping your hands into running water to wash your face

the unanimous protection of a baby or child in a public space where women are present

when an elderly woman laughs and grips your forearm tightly

your future self loves you. they will look through old photos of you with affection, not disgust, nor embarrassment. they wish they could tell you stories of your future, of how much you’ll change, of the people you’ll meet, of how you’ll eventually learn to accept yourself, then love yourself. they will read your diary entries and poems and favourite lyrics, heart aching, tears in their eyes. if only you knew...

your future self loves you. if only they could show you. they are living proof. you’ll turn out okay after all. they wish they were there to console you, dance with you, and make you write it a hundred times: “I AM LOVED”. they will listen to playlists you made, just to experience you again. they will write you a letter - of forgiveness, longing, reassurance. you will never read it. but you will know.

ultimately i think kindness is the most radical thing you can do with your pain and your anger. it’s like, you take everything awful that’s ever been done to you, and you throw it back in the world’s teeth, and you say no, fuck you, i’m not going to take this.  you say this is unacceptable. you say that shit stops with me.

humans are fucking terrible and this awful world we live in will fucking kill you but if you are kind, if you are brave and clever and try really hard, you can defy it. you can impose on this bleak and monstrous structure something beautiful. even if it’s temporary. even if it doesn’t heal anything inside you that’s been hurt.  

i’m gonna sleep and i’m gonna wake up and i swear by everything in this deadly horrible universe i’m gonna make someone happy.
