Free Free Palestine!
Norman R. Morrison was an AmericanĀ anti-war activist. On November 2, 1965, Morrison doused himself in kerosene and set himself on fire below the office ofĀ Secretary of Defense Robert McNamaraĀ atĀ the Pentagon to protestĀ United StatesĀ involvement in theĀ Vietnam War, leading to his death.Ā
Ā On February 25, 2024, Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old serviceman of theĀ United States Air Force,Ā died after setting himself on fireĀ outside the front gate of theĀ Embassy of Israel in Washington. Bushnell said that he was protesting against "what people have been experiencing inĀ PalestineĀ at the hands of theirĀ colonizers" and declared that he "will no longer beĀ complicitĀ inĀ genocide", after which he doused himself with a flammable liquid and set himself on fire
guys i actually beg of you to not let palestine become an unpleasant flashback, a transient tumblr trend, a hasbeen subject that just faded away. as an arabāand specifically iraqiāgirl, i know what it feels like to have family displaced all over the world as a result of western imperialism. i know what it feels like to not be able to step foot into your homeland because itās no longer safe. as an american iraqi, raised in the us and insulated from my roots, it wasnāt until last summer that i was able to visit iraq for the first time, and even then my family was worried for my safetyāin my own blood country. although nothing like what palestinians are experiencing right now, it might be the tiniest semblance of what it feels like to watch your country disintegrate in front of you.
and this is a universal arab experience. i volunteer weekly at a refugee center that serves middle eastern refugees, and every day i see the longing in their eyes when they speak of where they hail from. itās safe to say that we will be getting a wave of palestinian refugees very soon: just another generation of arabs who canāt inhabit their own country.
arab culture is so rich, so profound, so beautiful. i am tired of being told by the worldāthrough literal genocideāthat it doesnāt mean anything. please never let this be forgotten. free palestine. free palestine. free palestine.
The thing is that getting Palestine free is both very difficult but not as difficult as getting South Africa free. South Africa had more resources than Israel does, it could hold out so much longer and still the apartheid was ended by people working tirelessly and boycotting and pushing for divestment and sanctions. These methods will work for freeing Palestine too.
I know it doesn't feel like there have been many successes, but all the politicians are feeling the pressure. Pressure that we are able to sustain and even increase as we come up with new initiatives and convince new people to join.
One of the reasons they're resisting our pressure so strongly is because they know that when we see gains we will push harder, we will continue to push until the stones falling becomes a rock fall and Palestine's freedom is secured. They know if we get a taste of the power we can wield we'll turn that onto freeing Congo too. They know we're unhappy and have been for a long time and their very secure system starts to look a lot less secure when we start mobilising to change things.
