Designer Thom Browne created a holy experience for New York Fashion Week, setting the stage with actual church pews, glowing red crosses and a haze of ecclesiastical incense.

Looks included delicate gold leaf-pressed fabric, with the designer instructing models not to touch one another as they walked down the elevated catwalk. Wall Street Journal photographer Kurt Wilberding said he took some of these pictures—appropriately—while kneeling.
