If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face-forever.
O'Brien, George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four
I honestly donβt know if Iβll ever understand why exactly people hate Holden Caulfield from βThe Catcher in the Ryeβ.
I mean, sure, you could defend your dislike with a classic gem such as, βOh, heβs just a whiny, pretentious f***boy! Heβs so boring, all he does is complain!β
But at that Iβm just like
okay, wow, Iβm sorry the incredibly depressed mentally ill teenager who has no true friends and is constantly being ignored by the people he tries to reach out to and is constantly being told heβs useless and a bad influence by his peers and has alluded to being sexually molested by multiple people as a little kid and has to deal with the pain and hardship of growing up in a world he canβt help but see as superficial and hypocritical and WHOSE CLASSMATE FRICKINβ COMMITTED SUICIDE IN FRONT OF HIM isnβt a conventionally cheerful or likeable protagonist????
I donβt understand why thatβs so hard for people to grasp; it just straight up BAFFLES me. I mean, people eke out all sorts of ways to like downright villains like Alex (DeLarge) or Loki or Ramsay Snow/Bolton, or antiheros like Jaime/Cersei Lannister, Sherlock Holmes, etc.
Why is it so hard to dole out a little sympathy for Holden, who, ultimately, just wants to protect children from the evils of the worldβarguably one of the noblest and most heartbreakingly tender aspirations of all?

The loneliest man.
STS-41B, February 12, 1984
Mission Specialist Bruce McCandless II, is seen further away from the confines and safety of his ship than any previous astronaut has ever been. This space first was made possible by the Manned Manuevering Unit or MMU, a nitrogen jet propelled backpack. After a series of test maneuvers inside and above Challengerβs payload bay, McCandless went βfree-flyingβ to a distance of 320 feet away from the Orbiter. This stunning orbital panorama view shows McCandless out there amongst the black and blue of Earth and space.

The roughest week in space history. Saw this on a Facebook group I am a member of RIP Commander Scobee, and the rest of the crew.
