I turn 30 next month so here’s what I learned in my 20s:

—don’t work for startups, they’re always one ‘innovative idea’ away adding ‘sell your kidneys on the black market’ to your job description.

—keeping a collection of basic OTC medicine on you will save your life one day. I recommend Advil, Imodium, and TUMS.

—those little single-use glasses cleaning wipes are 1000% worth the money

—overly self-depreciating jokes just make people uncomfortable, wean yourself off of them

—you can buy dehydrated mini marshmallows in bulk online and they’re a godsend for hot cocoa

—people don’t care if you have fidget toys on your desk they just want to play with them

—try to go to bed BEFORE the existential ennui kicks in

“Shut up and go get your girl,” Raven said, a smile in her voice. So maybe, just maybe, Lexa was forgiven. She doubted it, but she could hope. As long as Clarke was safe, she was pretty sure the rest of them would get over her sneaking out.

Using the appropriate vocabulary in your novel

It is very important that the language in your novel reflects the time and place in which the story is set.

For example, my story is set in Italy. My characters would never “ride shotgun”, a term coined in US in the early 1900s referring to riding alongside the driver with a shotgun to gun bandits. 

Do your research! A free tool that I found to be very useful is Ngram Viewer. 

You can type any word and see when it started appearing in books. For example…one of my characters was going to say “gazillion” (I write YA) in 1994. Was “gazillion” used back then?

And the answer is…YES! It started trending in 1988 and was quite popular in 1994.

Butterflies — this is a really great take on love and how the media (and ourselves) portray it. Seriously worth a read!

I would just like to point out the many many candles in this photo. I guess “I’ll always be with you” included the candles. Or did Clarke go back to Polis for them? I can imagine her digging through the tower’s rubble and finding thousands of candles. The ones on the metal structure on the left are all sh has left.
