I don't think Mystic Seller is who/what he says he is. The general consensus seems to be that he's a neutral party, but

I happened to linger on his dialogue, and when he says his coded phrase in red, if you let him finish making his little noises he ends it with an evil laugh. And then the whispers start playing.

The ones that play when you're one hit away from death. The deep voice urging you to fight, kill, and destroy.

In the Pilgrim interactive comic, if you linger on this page with what appears to be Mystic Seller in the light, the sound effect is the one that plays when you stand close to Turua's Tentacles.
