it started with something simple, insignificant.
one of their coworker’s, officer chen, had dropped off a cup of coffee (gavin’s favorite, from a small, out of the way coffee shop a couple blocks away from the precinct) on his desk. she clapped him on the shoulder and smiled at him, and gavin thanked her with a begrudging smile in return.
gavin never thanked him. or smiled at him, for that matter.
something trickled through his veins, sending sharp negative signals throughout his system.
he dismissed them, along with the small, inconspicuous notice of “software instability.”
—
the next time, they were on a stakeout.
the long hours of waiting weren’t much of a problem for him— he was at work, and as long as he was working on a task he remained unbothered. detective reed, however, was a different matter entirely.
the man knocked him on the shoulder, getting his attention from the passenger seat of the vehicle. “hey, toaster. can androids measure attractiveness?” he tilted his head at the detective in a wordless inquiry, earning an eye-roll. “like, can you tell if someone’s hot?”
hot. rk900 assumed that he meant that figuratively, not literally.
“i…” he had taken notice of other’s appearances before. officer chen had an amicable smile, rk800 had a soothing demeanor, detective reed had an appealing build, and endearing scars, and lips that looked—
software instability.
“i suppose i can determine that, although there isn’t exactly an objective measurement of—“
“yeah, yeah, i get it. just…” he leaned over conspiratorially before pointing out a man in a tight-fitted t-shirt near the entrance of an apartment. “what d’you think of that guy?”
rk900 blinked, doing a quick once-over of the man. he appeared to be tall, dark-haired, and fairly muscular, with pale blue eyes. “i don’t see anything wrong with his appearance,” he replied carefully. “why? i don’t believe he is involved in our investigation, detective.”
detective reed shrugged, his gaze switching back to him. it almost seemed like he was searching for something, some kind of reaction. “no reason, just wanted some input.” he paused. “he has nice thighs. i’d ask him out, if, y’know, we weren’t stuck in this car for god knows how long.”
something about the idea of detective reed “asking him out” makes that uncomfortable feeling spike through him once more. his brow furrowed and he looked away, ignoring the detective’s surveying gaze. “you may do whatever you wish once this investigation is over.” except he very explicitly did not want him to do that.
—
maybe it was everything else in the past few months that built up to this.
rk900— no, nines, that’s what detective reed had taken to calling him— stood over the unconscious form of one of detroit’s biggest drug dealers.
as reed would put it, he fucked up.
the man in question was currently staring at him with a mixture of shock and gratitude, causing a wave of feelings to— oh, he could feel now.
that’s a problem for later.
“we need to get out of here,” he hissed out, clutching him by the arm and practically dragging him out of the room. a bullet hit where they stood moments before, and nines really, really fucked up, but it felt good.
“god, you’re a—“ gavin swore loudly as a gunshot narrowly missed his head and he ducked around the corner, taking the stairs multiple steps at a time, “—a fucking maniac, nines, why the fuck did you do that?”
a good question, really. all he knew was that one moment, a sleazy, disgusting pile of filth was feeling up gavin, and then nines was breaking through a barrier of protocols and system errors that told him to keep their cover and maintain the mission in order to get that man’s hands off of his partner.
“he had it coming,” was what he decided to say.
gavin laughed between breaths, shaking his head. “you’re, fuck, you’re really something else, huh?”
he could get used to this.
