âI like cancelled plans. And empty bookstores. I like rainy days and thunderstorms. And quiet coffee shops. I like messy beds and over-worn pajamas. Most of all, I like the small joys that a simple life brings.â

Soulmates
it started with something simple, insignificant.
one of their coworkerâs, officer chen, had dropped off a cup of coffee (gavinâs favorite, from a small, out of the way coffee shop a couple blocks away from the precinct) on his desk. she clapped him on the shoulder and smiled at him, and gavin thanked her with a begrudging smile in return.
gavin never thanked him. or smiled at him, for that matter.
something trickled through his veins, sending sharp negative signals throughout his system.
he dismissed them, along with the small, inconspicuous notice of âsoftware instability.â
â
the next time, they were on a stakeout.
the long hours of waiting werenât much of a problem for himâ he was at work, and as long as he was working on a task he remained unbothered. detective reed, however, was a different matter entirely.
the man knocked him on the shoulder, getting his attention from the passenger seat of the vehicle. âhey, toaster. can androids measure attractiveness?â he tilted his head at the detective in a wordless inquiry, earning an eye-roll. âlike, can you tell if someoneâs hot?â
hot. rk900 assumed that he meant that figuratively, not literally.
âiâŚâ he had taken notice of otherâs appearances before. officer chen had an amicable smile, rk800 had a soothing demeanor, detective reed had an appealing build, and endearing scars, and lips that lookedâ
software instability.
âi suppose i can determine that, although there isnât exactly an objective measurement ofââ
âyeah, yeah, i get it. justâŚâ he leaned over conspiratorially before pointing out a man in a tight-fitted t-shirt near the entrance of an apartment. âwhat dâyou think of that guy?â
rk900 blinked, doing a quick once-over of the man. he appeared to be tall, dark-haired, and fairly muscular, with pale blue eyes. âi donât see anything wrong with his appearance,â he replied carefully. âwhy? i donât believe he is involved in our investigation, detective.â
detective reed shrugged, his gaze switching back to him. it almost seemed like he was searching for something, some kind of reaction. âno reason, just wanted some input.â he paused. âhe has nice thighs. iâd ask him out, if, yâknow, we werenât stuck in this car for god knows how long.â
something about the idea of detective reed âasking him outâ makes that uncomfortable feeling spike through him once more. his brow furrowed and he looked away, ignoring the detectiveâs surveying gaze. âyou may do whatever you wish once this investigation is over.â except he very explicitly did not want him to do that.
â
maybe it was everything else in the past few months that built up to this.
rk900â no, nines, thatâs what detective reed had taken to calling himâ stood over the unconscious form of one of detroitâs biggest drug dealers.
as reed would put it, he fucked up.
the man in question was currently staring at him with a mixture of shock and gratitude, causing a wave of feelings toâ oh, he could feel now.
thatâs a problem for later.
âwe need to get out of here,â he hissed out, clutching him by the arm and practically dragging him out of the room. a bullet hit where they stood moments before, and nines really, really fucked up, but it felt good.
âgod, youâre aââ gavin swore loudly as a gunshot narrowly missed his head and he ducked around the corner, taking the stairs multiple steps at a time, ââa fucking maniac, nines, why the fuck did you do that?â
a good question, really. all he knew was that one moment, a sleazy, disgusting pile of filth was feeling up gavin, and then nines was breaking through a barrier of protocols and system errors that told him to keep their cover and maintain the mission in order to get that manâs hands off of his partner.
âhe had it coming,â was what he decided to say.
gavin laughed between breaths, shaking his head. âyouâre, fuck, youâre really something else, huh?â
he could get used to this.

Evan didnât exactly think that he and Connor Murphy were friends. They were sort of just stuck with each other. Thatâs what happens when youâre the two outcasts of high school. It took until the last year of what Connor would only refer to as âhellâ for the two of them to even talk to each other. It was only after the third very awkward conversation that both of them realized the benefit of putting up with each other. It doesnât matter how odd the you are, if there are two of you other people tend to leave you alone. So they decided that theyâd use each other to blend into the background for there last few months of âhell.â
Now that theyâre both graduated, Evan wasnât completely sure why Connor still wanted him around. However, when Connor asked if he was doing anything on one of the first days of their summer Evan replied that he was free. Thatâs how they ended up wandering a not so busy street that Evan had never seen before in his life.
âNot that Iâm complaining,â Evan started.
âWhat?â Connor glanced at him questioningly.
âWhy are we here?â Evan blurted.
âYou do not want to be anywhere near my house after school is over,â Connor said, seeing this as a full explanation. âMy mom and sister get crazy.â
âOh,â Evan wasnât sure what to say to this.
âThey call it summer depression,â Connor rolled his eyes.
âI can relate to that,â Evan admits.
âItâs not depression, Hansen,â Connor sounded a little annoyed. âTheyâre just bored and like to torment people.â
Evan got used to Connor complaining about his family a week into hanging out with him. Evan didnât really mind, since it seemed to make Connor less irritated when he talked about it. Evan learned to nod along, and occasionally agree when it seemed like that was what Connor needed.
âBut, um,â Evan tried again. âWhy are we here?â
âBecause I need to get out of the house and you donât let me touch anything at yours,â Connorâs voice was flat.
âI mean, why couldnât we just go to the usual places?â Evan is finally able to clarify.
âEvan,â Connor laughed. âWe donât have usual places.â
âBut during schoolââ
âOnly took you there because we were skipping and I didnât want to get caught,â Connor cut him off.
âOh.â
âDid you seriously think I just liked to hang out at the backend of the marketplace?â Connor looked bemused.
âMaybe,â Evan mumbled.
âYouâre so weird,â Connor didnât say this like it was an insult.
âThanks,â Evan said under his breath. âSo, weâre going?â
âSomewhere,â Connor shrugged.
âYou donât know,â Evan realized.
âNope.â This prospect seemed to please Connor. âWell, what do you usually do?â
âDuring the summer?â Evan stammered. âNothing really, last year I was an intern park ranger.â
âBecause you like trees,â Connor nodded.
Evan didnât realizes Connor remembered this. Sure, he had talked about it before, but he hadnât thought that Connor actually listened to what Evan told him at school. The thought that Connor actually paid attention put a grin on his face.
âYeah,â he confirmed.
âThereâs a park near here,â Connor stated.
âReally?â
âWeâll go there,â he decided with a smile. âThat can be our new usual place.â
âOkay,â Evan laughed.
âCome on,â Connor grabbed his arm. âYou walk really fucking slow.â
âSorry,â Evan tried to say, but was cut off by Connor pulling him.
He liked this. Maybe Connor considered him a friend after all. That idea made Evan happier than he thought it would. Truth be told, Evan really did like Connor. He just didnât think that Connor would ever think of Evan as more than a person to hide through high school with. The thought of being more was amazing.
For a second, everything was Evanâs idea of perfect. Then Connor abruptly stopped walking.
âFucking hell,â he muttered.
âWhat?â
Evan followed Connorâs gaze, his eye-line stopped on a large group of people populating the sidewalk. Most of them held signs and all of them wore unpleasant expressions. Evan knew that their community wasnât always the most accepting, but he didnât realize that groups actually stood on street corners with âanti gay marriageâ signs.
Evan didnât want to walk past this. Sexuality or not, protesters always made him uncomfortable. Alone he would have probably ran the opposite direction. Were he with his mother or Jared, maybe he would have been able to ignore it. Being with Connor was different. A few months ago Connor had accidentally told Evan he was gay while he was ranting about something a homophobic relative has said to his sister. Evan hadnât been able to tell Connor that he wasnât straight either, because the thought of telling anyone that still kinda terrified him.
âThey have to be right in the fucking way,â Connor muttered angrily.
âWe could go somewhere else,â Evan suggested.
âNo,â Connor shook his head, his expression settling for determination. âWeâre going to the park.â
âSorry,â Evan mumbled.
âItâs not your fault,â Connor told him. âDonât apologize.â
âI know itâs not,â Evan stammered. âBut you seem irritatedâsorry.â
âHansen.â
âShutting up,â he said quickly.
âNot what I meant,â Connor sighed. âLook, just come on.â
Connor pulled him across the street and then started down the sidewalk lined with hateful stares. Evan realized that these people were looking at him. This was probably because Connorâs arm was still linked around Evanâs. It didnât look like Connor was doing this because he didnât think Evan was going to be able to walk quickly alone. Evan knew what it looked like, and why so many eyes were on them now.
âWe could not,â he whispered, tugging Connorâs arm.
He watched Connor look from Evanâs arm to the people around him. He expected Connor to let go, to make it clear that there was nothing at all romantic going on here. That wasnât necessarily what Evan wanted, since, glares aside, Connorâs arm felt like his lifeline right now. Â Â
âItâs fine,â Connor didnât let go.
They kept walking, a little faster now. Evan felt like this sidewalk was never going to end.
âConnor?â he whispered again.
âWhat?â Connorâs voice was tight.
âTheyâre staring at us,â he stated.
âIâm going to flip them off,â Connor hissed.
âPlease donât!â Evan exclaimed a little too loudly.
âThought youâd say that,â Connor chuckled.
âI really donât want to have to pull you away from punching a middle aged guy,â Evan was only partly joking.
âDude, that would be so funny though,â Connor smirked.
âConnor,â Evan groaned.
âI know, I know,â Connor rolled his eyes.
Evan was trying to only look at the ground in front of his feet. He could feel Connorâs arm clench.
âI donât mean this to be offensive,â Evan started in a small voice. âBecause Iâm like kinda freaking out so Iâm not really one to talkââ
âWhat is it?â Connor asked softly.
âYou seem really tense,â Evan said. âSo we could just stop.â
âIâll tell you when weâre at the park,â Connor sounded tired.
âWhy youâre turning your knuckles white?â Evan tried to clarify.
âYeah,â Connor nodded.
It seemed like everything was going to be fine. They were almost past the signs and Evan could still breath. He didnât see who shouted it, his eyes were still on the ground, but he heard a very loud, and very obnoxious voice yell the word âfag.â Evan didnât have to see the shouter to know that the insult was directed at them.
He felt Connor hear it. Connor let go of Evanâs arm. Evan braced for the explosion.
âFuck you!â
Evan had never heard Connorâs voice this full of anger, and heâd been with Connor after he was called a freak by their classmates.
He watched Connor turn on his heels, away from the countless people who now looked like they wanted to kill the both of them. The next few second seemed to pass in slow motion. Connor gave Evan an apologetic look that Evan was cut off from questioning by Connorâs hands grasping his shoulders. Then Connorâs lips were planted on his.
Connor was kissing him. Evan was barely able to register the feel of Connorâs lips, they werenât as rough as they seemed. Connorâs breath was warm too. When he pulled back, Evan realized he was grinning.
Then they were running. Well, Connor was running, and he was pulling Evan a long with him. They didnât stop until they were blocks away and out of breath.
âIâm sorry,â Connor panted. âThat was out of line and really fucking impulsive. If you just want to go homeââ
âThat was kinda amazing,â Evan blurted
Connor stared at him.
âWhat?â Evan asked in a smaller voice. Was that the wrong thing to say?
âYouâre fucking awesome,â Connor grinned again.
âConnor,â Evan said slowly, a grin forming on his face as well. âYouâre the one who kissed me, I didnât do anything.â
âYeah but youâre not freaking out,â Connor pointed out.
âI know,â Evan laughed. âIâm probably more surprised then you are.â
This entire situation should make him want to throw up, but he felt incredible.
âOkay,â Connor hesitated. âDonât freak out now.â
Evan gave him a questioning look.
âBut I was really focused on running away,â Connor winced.
âYeah?â
âAnd kinda have no fucking clue where we are,â he admitted.
âWhat?â Evan gaped at him.
âSorry,â Connor sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck.
Evan burst into laughter.
âOkay,â Connor eyed him. âIs this good laughing or bad laughing?â
âGood, I think,â Evan replied.
âThank God,â Connor sighed.
âI need to sit down,â Evan admitted. He was starting to feel light headed.
âRight,â Connor nodded. âYeah.â
Connor lead him to a bench, and Evan all but collapsed. His mind kept replaying that moment in front of the homophobic protesters.
âIâm gonna call my sister and see if she can pick us up, we can go to the park tomorrow or something,â Connor said. âAre you okay here?â
âYeah,â Evan smiled at him.
âIâll just be a second.â
He watched Connor walk a distance away, holding his phone to his ear. Evan focused on breathing. He tried not to think about Connorâs lips. Connor was just trying to shock those people, the kissing didnât have anything to do with Evan. Still, he kept calling back the feel of Connorâs hands on his shoulders.
âAre you sure her summer depression isnât gonna make you angry?â Evan joked when Connor walked back to him.
âFunny,â Connor rolled his eyes.
âI try,â Evan grinned.
âThis is the most youâve talked to me without stuttering,â Connor observed.
âI know,â Evan admitted. âI think itâs adrenaline.â
âI told Zoe,â Connor stated.
It took a second for Evan to realize what that meant.
âI thought you guys didnât talk,â he remembered.
âWe donât but,â Connor paused. âDonât tell her I told you this, but sheâs had a bad experience with people like that.â
âWhat?â
âShe was walking with her friend about a year ago,â Connor explained. âOne of them said something, and then I think she told them to shut up. It escalated into shouting.â
âShe didnât get hurt, did she?â Evan asked worriedly.
âNo,â Connor shook his head but his fist was clenched at the memory. âNo, sheâs fine. But thatâs why people like that make me wanna punch something.â
âOr kiss someone,â Evan added.
âYeah,â Connor turned to him with a tentative expression. âI should have given you warning.â
âYeah, do that next time.â
âNext time?â Connor blinked at him.
âI mean,â Evan sputtered. âIf there is, not that youâd want toâdo you want to? Am I making it weird? Iâm making it weird.â
âHansen,â Connor said slowly. âAre you into me?â
âNo,â Evan lied on instinct. âWell, yeah, sorry!â
âFuck,â Connor sounded amazed.
âSorry,â Evan heard how high his voice was.
âNo,â Connor shook his head. âNo, donât apologize.â
âSorry,â Evan wasnât able to stop his mouth from talking.
âI said donât,â Connor sighed.
âRight!â Evan shut up.
Connor started at him, then shook his head again.
âYou realize Iâve been flirting with you for months, right?â he finally said.
âYou have?â Evan gaped at him.
âMy fucking god,â Connor flopped onto the bench.
âSorry!â Evan blurted. âI mean, not sorry?â
Connor laughed.
âIâm really bad at this,â Evan muttered.
âI thought that you were straight,â Connor said absently. âOr that you just thought I was too fucked up.â
âI donât think youâre fucked up,â Evan meant this.
âThis is fucking hilariousââ
Evan cut Connor off this time by planting a kiss on his cheek. He pulled back quickly. Connor looked stunned, his heart was racing.
âSo, um,â he stammered. âDo you want to go out or something? Is that what people say afterâŚâ
âSpontaneously kissing someone?â Connor provided.
âIn front of homophobic protesters,â Evan added.
âI think weâre a first for that,â Connor let him know with a grin.
They were interrupted by a car honking. Connor jumped off the bench and extended a hand to Evan.
âAnd that would be Zoe,â he explained.
âRight,â Evan nodded.
âCome on,â Connor pulled him up but didnât let go of his hand.
Evan was pretty sure that he and Connor werenât friends. That was okay. He liked this better.
