imagine the foxes doing a tiktok challenge or something after a game and when they're getting out of the locker rooms they get asked to name which teammate is the funniest and most of the foxes saying matt, or allison or nicky, but neil going like: 'andrew', without missing a beat, and then andrew going: 'me' all serious and done with that kind of stupid social media stuff (because neil always laughs at his jokes and he's the only audience he cares about), and everyone in the comments are like: 'are they joking right??' 'neil is messing with andrew because they hate each other lol', but actually, in neil's opinion, andrew IS the funniest person ever specially because he tells his jokes with the best poker face and has the same dark and twisted fucked up humor as he does š
anyways, I just imagined that video so clearly and I need a socmed fic with this scenario now š
One of my favorite things in AFTG is how the author deals with consent, particularly between Neil and Andrew. "Please" is such an easy go-to to make something not sound like an order or demand (especially for more aggressive characters, i.e., "Let me x/Do x, please"), but she completely took that off the table in this case. It becomes even more of a challenge when you take into account how Andrewās bluntness can be taken as rude, but it's offset so well with Neil needing it spelled out to him because romantic interest go right over his head. Also, once a boundary is set, it's set. No questions asked. No testing it. And despite Neil being dumb as bricks to most things (bless his heart), most of those boundaries aren't even verbally discussed. It's either trial and error, observation of the other, or just left for the other to initiate. And there's no question to the reader that "no" or any sign of hesitation will be taken as "no." It's kinda refreshing to see it portrayed that way in media.
Jean is not a delicate little butterfly thatās been trampled into the mud. Heās a chained dragon thatās been trampled into the mud, and the chains are off now. No one else could survive what he went through for as long as he did, certainly not with any trace of spirit or heart still intact. No wonder Jean feels so unseen. Not because people canāt see his pain⦠but because thatās ALL theyāre seeing. How frustrating to prove yourself unbreakable only to be always seen as something broken. Heās faced the darkest fires of hell and survived, but everyoneās focussed on his still-smoking wounds instead of his still-beating heart. This man is a warrior. Itās his enemies they should feel sorry for.
To Jean, the worst part about Evermore was his own physical limitations. Also, I gave him a duck tattoo for Elodie ā”
jean moreau and neil josten parallels might be death of me. how they were meant to have each other's numbers. misplaced forever partners. neil was jean's unfulfilled promise. how jean was always there to pick neil back up again during his stay in evermore. how jean and neil were the same in the eyes of the moriyamas. how one was scarred and burned with fire and the other was abused and conditioned with water. how fierce and gentle neil is with jean despite knowing him for a couple of weeks max. how they understand each other on a level that maybe no one else can. jeanneil you are SO real to me.
'"You're a Fox," Andrew said, like it was that simple, and maybe it was.'
I could've added a lot more details to this and it's not 100% accurate to the book, but I had to stop myself or this would've taken me another week to finish lmao
Andreil !!
Neil josten and Andrew minyard, my beloveds š¤
How many times do you think the Foxes have joked about similarities between Kevin and Wymack before they knew? Theyād laugh about how āyouāve perfected Coachās look of disappointmentā and Kevin would stare off into space for a moment, a little bit wistful, a little bit pleased, before play on the court resumes under Wymackās direction.
the crazy thing is u can legitimately see wade wilson, the merc w a mouth, willingly choose to be gentle with logan ā specifically after the fight/fuck in the car. because at first wolverine was just a thing to use. he was one of hundreds of thousands of logans in the multiverse, and he existed to save wadeās timeline. but logan saw right thru wade within hours of knowing him (and was able to hurt him). and in turn wade saw loganā¦ā¦they are very alike in a lot of ways. wade uses humor and logan his anger but they both have deep trauma (years of being seen as only killers, being turned into a āmonsterā by the government, suicidal tendencies), they both have self esteem and insecurities, they both feel like they donāt deserve to be loved or to be happy, they both struggle to trust. logan was called the worst wolverine and when wade realized why and how close it hit home w his own issues, it became oh. thatās not just a wolverine, thatās my wolverine. heās wounded and he wants to die and he never wants another person to get close to his heart because god it hurts but at the same time he wants to live & love. and wade chose to be the one to bring him home & help him do so
disagree with me if u want but I think it would be so hilarious if, after Jeremy becomes one of the first and only people that Neil immediately decides he likes, Jeremy just LOATHES Neil. Because in tsc we learn that Neil Josten just gives scary vibes. Heās harsh, heās unpredictable, and he has that manic smile he shows more and more thatās just unsettling. And WE know that he can actually be very caring and empathetic when he likes someone, but Jeremy has barely ever interacted with him. Neilās perception of Jeremy that we see in tkm is that heās just this really chill, nice guy whoās great at exy and is just someone Neil really appreciates. But Jeremy only knows Neil through a) his not so flattering public reputation, and b) his pretty complicated relationship with Jean. Jeremyās most significant memory of Neil is that one day, Neil just randomly shows up in California and Jean just looks terrified, they disappear for five hours and when Jean gets back he has a huge breakdown and looks like heās going to cry. Wouldnāt it be so hilarious if this just taints any perception that Jeremy has of Neil? and so when they actually meet up, captain sunshineāthe most accepting and kind man alive who is just friends with anyoneāthinks that Neil is just an absolute asshole.
Bonus if Neil is completely oblivious to this. They start talking after a game and Jeremy is being super cold to him, to the point that even the foxes notice how awkward the conversation is, and then later that night Neilās just like: āJeremyās the best, one of the only exy captains I actually have respect for.ā And the other foxes are like ???
