I will admit: not everything aged well. Be also prepared for:

-it‘s v white. If they have characters of color, they sometimes work well. And sometimes it‘s embarassing to watch bc harmful stereotypes (not often but yeah. It happens.)

-Bodyshaming: the girls tease each other about their height, weight etc. and sometimes it can really become a lot/too much.

-Rose is so often the butt of the joke for not understanding situations. I think a lot of neurodivergent folks can relate. And it can hurt to hear the same old mean comments again and again

BUT

-This is a series which was never afraid of complicated topics

-First and foremost: the queer advocacy and topics were and still are amazing. The found family of it all alone.

-Also: death,being sick, being disabled. Getting old. Not performing the gender The way one would like to (anymore) (so. yes. Dysphoria. In a way). The financial aspect of it all. These are important topics which are treated with humor (of course) but also with respect

-it‘s a kind show which has its heart in the right place

I think in theory Effie deserves better but my personal head canon is that Haymitch and Effie kind of gravitate around and towards each other over the 25 years. Sexually, romantically, emotionally.

Some years she’s in a relationship (my Effie is bi) and other years something reminds him too much of Lenore and he’s too guilty to go to her, but when he’s just the right level of drunk and she’s unattached and they both experience the horrors they find comfort in each other.

They know each other intimately and deeply and horrifically but if it was ever real outside of the apartments of the Capital it would be something that could be lost so they don’t acknowledge it in the cold light of day.

They love each other and in fact at different times they are in love with the other (depressingly it doesn’t overlap) but it’s just something that they never can pursue in reality. He thinks he’s betraying Lenore Dove by loving anyone else and not stoping the reaping.

But after the epilogue, after he fulfilled his promise to Lenore Dove, I like to imagine that Effie comes to 12 to meet the first toast baby and there in the warm summer sun, when Haymitch thinks his time is coming near, it’s actually his final rebirth.

He and Effie finally allow themselves to be together at like age 60 and spend their twilight years essentially in quiet comfort together.

okay i've had multiple anons asking for my opinion so i'm just gonna say this here: i think y'all are thinking about the hayffie age gap a little too hard.

at most they are 5-6 years apart. and this isn't me condoning university grads getting into relationships with high school students but, and here's the thing, hayffie literally aren't romantic at this point and (by general fandom lore standards) they won't be for a very, very long time. most hayffie lore has them getting together in their late 30s to 40s. and idk if the mere idea of an adult effie seeing a teenage haymitch like at most 3 to 4 times across the span of several years before he becomes an adult himself makes you uncomfortable i don't really know what to tell you. even after they're both adults, i feel like it's a loooong road before they start looking at eachother with even the slightest bit of attraction, by which point i feel like the 5-6 years is kinda superfluous. the fact that there is no indication of the age different in thg and cf should tell u exactly how superfluous it is by the time they hit middle age.

I ADORE purple hair effie! As for the storyline of sotr, in my head she got into uni early (she was said to be a ‘genius’ so fight me on that) and was by far the youngest and coolest of her year. i just know her outfits would devour every single lecture. and she’d probably sport an artsy tote bag. I’ve added references to her butterfly look (see jewellery), where we see the actual skin of her shoulders (see spaghetti straps) and i’ve also included some gold in reference to our beloved T.E.A.M., who should totally have been allowed to reunite in the epilogue. GET MY FAMILY BACK TOGETHER.

Headcanon that effie has gorgeous curly hair. why? because i said so. I gave her a hairstyle I often wear (mainly because I’d find it easier to draw, lmao) and i think it would frame her still-youthful face so well. for me it was important to have it falling as freely and messily as possible, in contrast to how she is when katniss meets her, several years into a job she never wanted and forced to cover her natural expressive curls with wigs that are carefully styled, not a hair out of place. the day effie wore a wig was the day we lost a baddie.

As for the quote, it hits SO different now and i’m not sure i can handle it. currently managing by drawing freckles all over effie. i cannot BELIEVE that someone that young would start thinking of cosmetic surgeries. my girl should’ve been worrying about late assignments!

side note: i lost my stylus and had to do this with my finger so there’s no tasty lineart right now (rip) but a revised version to come if my lunacy continues into next week. ALSO, i’m thinking about doing haymitch as well, just to really rub salt in the wound.

Honestly, this is something that needs to be talked about more. My mom passed four years ago, and my dad still flinches when we pull out the mug she always used to use on Saturdays and talks about her like his world began and ended in the depths of her eyes. But he also has a full-blown crush on this guy he works with and comes home talking about whatever they'd discussed that day and if he should read into the guy's comment on his shirt being cute. My dad doesn't love my mom any less because he's allowing himself to entertain loving again; it doesn't even mean that he's moved on from the grief of it all.

controversial opinion but I don’t think lenore’s entrance affects hayffie canonly at all. In fact I think it actually makes me like hayffie more.

because even if haymitch will love lenore dove for the rest of his life, which he will, she’s gone, and he’s still alive. He can love her and love someone else, and that can be okay. Because love for someone who’s dead is so, so different from loving someone who’s living. Haymitch is an adult, he’s allowed to contain a multitude of feelings and have complex emotions about multiple people. effie isn’t trying to take Lenore Dove’s place, they have their own, new, different thing, and that has meaning, too. The way that Haymitch loves Effie doesn’t detract from how much he loves Lenore, and vise versa.

Peoples relationships can be different and equally important. (human relationships usually don’t fit in the strict boxes we make for them, but that’s a different post.) Haymitch doesn’t love either Effie or Lenore more, and saying that he can only love one like loving a person is a thing that can be scaled on a pyramid is kinda awful. Haymitch loves Lenore, but she’s dead, not to mention the fact that Effie herself is an entirely different person than Lenore was.

not being in active grief doesn’t mean he doesn’t remember her, or doesn’t still miss her, or loves her less then he loves Effie. It just means he found something for him to love in life, too, and I personally think lenore herself would love that. She wouldn’t have wanted Haymitch to stay yearning about her forever; the whole point of ending the games was so there could be a better future. I think it works better if they both exist, because both ships are unique and beautiful in their own way.

and even if it didn’t complement hayffie really well, you’re allowed to ship whatever you like without caring about wether or not it’s canon.

human relationships are nebulous and nonlinear (the same way everything about humans are) and you can have completely unique feelings about two different people. it isn’t like you have an inventory slot for people you love and then once there’s something in it it’s full, nuance exists
