It's so fucking crazy to me how people see animals as "having a purpose" instead of just being living things that deserve to exist whether or not they benefit humans. While it is true that almost every single species contributes to global ecosystems in some way (about 30 seconds of research makes that obvious), boiling a species down to their ecological role is reductive and, frankly, silly. I think it reflects something deeply wrong with our culture that we reduce nature to its "purpose" and believe it only deserves to exist if it has a job. This deranged "eco-essentialism" (just like every form of essentialism) commodifies living creatures and can be used to justify any amount of destruction and cruelty. Nature doesn't exist purely for the sake of humanity.

For every nineteenth-century middle-class family that protected its wife and child within the family circle, then, there was an Irish or a German girl scrubbing floors in that middle-class home, a Welsh boy mining coal to keep the home-baked goodies warm, a black girl doing the family laundry, a black mother and child picking cotton to be made into clothes for the family, and a Jewish or an Italian daughter in a sweatshop making “ladies”’ dresses or artificial flowers for the family to purchase.
