Cheat Code #2 for accommodating disabled characters in sci-fi/fantasy:

How you aid a disability depends on if it's a new development or had always existed.

i.e.: If someone's lost their legs to a griffin biting them off last week, giving them steampunk prosthetic legs is a good aid. There's something they can't do, that they very recently could, that they need to learn to work around. The prosthetic legs still need an adjustment period to learn how to use them, but your character knows how legs should work and can figure it out more easily.

If someone lost their legs because, as a child, they wandered away from the space field trip and got partially eaten by a carnivorous plant, then it depends. Prosthetic legs can technically work, but the longer the character was without legs, the harder it'll be to re-learn how to use them. You might want to go with bionic legs for short distances, but a hover chair for daily use.

If someone was born without legs, then prosthetic legs are more hindrance than they're worth. Your character has never had legs, and has no idea how they're supposed to work.

Imagine if you're in a world of centaurs; you're given prosthetic hind legs, and now expected to be able to climb up cliffs with the grace of a mountain goat. It's a whole new skill you'd have to learn, and you would get annoyed with it very fast; how are they supposed to sync with the legs you already have? How are you supposed to balance? You can't feel anything, you don't know how much space it occupies.

Someone who's always been disabled doesn't need the thing they were born without, they need aid that lets them do what everyone else can in a way they're familiar with. If your character has always been deaf, glasses with subtitles appearing on them are infinitely more useful than aids that let them hear, because hearing when you've always had silence is going to have a steep learning curve and be ridiculously overwhelming.

Your rule of thumb?

Try to give them something they're used to.

Note: This is different with very small children, because they're already learning how to use every part of them. If a toddler in your sci-fi was born without legs, they can be taught to use bionic legs at a very young age, but it has to start early or it'll run into the problems above.

omniscient reader is genuinely so masterfully done because i have never seen a first person viewpoint story manage to obfuscate it's main character so well and in such a thematically relevant way.

like. it's not just this, but we're so used to third person viewpoints being used in books, y'know? so of course we don't know exactly what the characters are thinking at all times. we only get to see that in specific moments where the author chooses to show us the characters thoughts.

but kim dokja is the viewpoint for the vast majority of the novel, we are literally sitting there in his mind reading his thoughts on every single thing, and we still don't know what the fuck he's planning. sure we can infer it, there's plenty of flawlessly done set-up and foreshadowing orv from a writing perspective.

but kim dokja never tells us anything. not really. not without hiding behind seven proxies. we learn about him but we never truly know him.

its crazy it's insane that yoo joonghyuk ends up doing the same fucked up things other people have done to him to kim dokja, out of love

he really said we're not breaking the cycle!!

its the most obvious in the 46th scenario, where he tries to betray kim dokja, just like anna croft did to him last regression, in exactly the same spot even. because he couldnt bear to see kim dokja die again, even if he has to act like his worst enemy.

'he doesnt eat food made by others' cause he got poisoned once and became paranoid that people would mess with his food, but then he goes along with kimcoms decition to secretly drug kim dokja. out of love! and cause he couldnt bear to see him rush into danger again, even if he has to do this thing that broke his trust in others forever.

and then, during the epilogue he writes a novel with kim dokja as the protagonist... when he spent his whole life trying to break free of the chains of the narrative and found out his whole life's suffering was because he was character in a novel he didnt consent to be written (even if he forgave that later) and then he goes on and does the same thing to kdj?

he who is the protagonist of Ways of Survival, knows intimately that you cant capture the true essence of someone in a novel, has asserted that many times to kim dokja himself, they fought about it, etc. yet now he helps write orv in the hopes thats somehow that's not true, with the impossible wish that kdj gets brought to life whole from their incomplete knowledge of him in ANOTHER NOVEL???????

One thing I love about orv is that it initially bait and switches you by convincing you early on that the constellations are the "big bad" of the story - voyeuristic beings that gain enjoyment off the suffering of others - until the reveal that they are also going through their own scenarios. This mirrors how us as the readers are going through our own lives and our own struggles yet we consume media highlighting the experiences of others. We root for these characters, we follow their journeys, we see ourselves in them. And yet we're not villains - we're just surviving. We're escaping the struggles of our own lives by indulging in these worlds created by human imagination. Similarly, many of the constellations in orv do not have malicious intentions despite living off stories - uriel cares greatly for the incarnations she supports (as the "fangirl" archetype) and sun wukong and abfd also greatly support kimcom throughout their journey.

This is further solidified in the reveal of the oldest dream. Despite unintentionally creating worldlines through his imagination, the younger kim dokja was never a villain or "monster". He was simply a child who sook to escape the tragedies of his life through a webnovel. He depended on that novel to survive. And that was in no way the sin he thought it was - not even secretive plotter who had gone through countless regressions and witnessed the despair of the universe could hold it against him. Nor han sooyoung, nor yoo joonghyuk of the 1864th round, nor yoo sangah, nor anyone else in kimcom. No one thought dokja needed to atone for anything - they loved him and cared for him even when he couldn't love himself.

Just like kim dokja and just like the constellations, we are readers seeking an escape from the struggles of reality. And we too are loved - regardless of whether we know it or understand why.

How jdj is the side story. I know that LHH is the protag there and most focus is probably on him and his companions. But I just wanted ask for your opinion?

consulted my wife friend about this list so that i wouldn't miss the important moments. a little heads up this post will have side story spoilers

when hsy opens the door at the end of chapter 551, kimcom are sent to a snowfield with two doors in it. in one of them theres a happy ending. kdj woke up and is waving at them. in the 2nd door, kdj didn't wake up. yjh was the first one to enter the 2nd door, Unnoticed by anyone might i add. he's the one who opens the door and says "if it was him, i knew he'd pull something like this"

when we get 49 kdj's pov at the end of season 1 of the side story there's a small scene of yjh bringing 49 food. the scene is not described with full details however we learn that 49 has forgotten most things about yjh, to the point he doesn't even rmbr if yjh has cooked rice for him before. yjh then says this line to him "You don't need to be anything. All that matters is what you want to be" next morning 49 decides to go to the 1865th regression turn in order to help kimcom get back 51.

yjh comes back from a second journey of searching for kdj fragments together with biyoo. he notices that hsy has failed to stop the 41st round, and ignoring lsh's warnings that he's too strong to descend into the 41st worldline bcs the probability will kill him and destroy the worldline immediately once he descends. he says that hsy and ysa need to create conditions for him to descend because "Kim Dokja is mine to bring back" kr fans have noticed that this sentence has two major tones to it. 1, possessive and 2, arrogant. "kdj is mine to bring back since you (hsy) couldn't"

season 3 of the side story has a lot of focus on dkos kdj. he's now lhh's sponsor and talks to him thru midday tryst. and he brings up yjh So Often that even lhh is bored/baffled. not to mention he refers to yjh with a lot of affectionate terms "joonghyuk-ah this, joonghyukie that" recently even selena kim and christina page were all "????" when kdj called yjh "joonghyukie" in front of them

in the beginning of season 3, yjh noticed a source of light enter the "curtain of the 41st worldline" (listen mtl is hard please bear with me) and he immediately slams himself into it, trying to follow after the light. seeing as the curtain is burning him and "grilling him like fish" jaehwan (aka the mc of the world after the fall) has to forcefully pull him back as he shouts "are you crazy" at yjh. spoiler alert, yes he is crazy

not exactly an explicit moment per se, but every time lhh incites himself as kdj or yjh his first thought will always be of the other

in order to subdue an overpowered 41yjh hsy decides to give him happy memories. those memories included a scene where yjh was cooking for kimcom and hsy described it as "yoo joonghyuk was dying from happiness." then the scene quickly puts kdj in the center where he comments about how good yjh's food tastes and that next time they come here (a picnic) they should bring more beef. she succeeds in subduing 41 even though he has never actually met kdj before. later on we learn that 41 also got the memory of the rooftop conversation between kdj and yjh. and like. dare i say. he really sounded a little jealous/sulky abt it. not to call him sp or anything..............

there's a small flashback of a (not written in orv) scene set during 1865th turn. it's about lost memories. yjh tells hsy that he forgets lots of memories whenever he regresses but it's okay because even if he forgets that guy (kdj) will remember them for him.

recent addition: ORV: yjh: you bought a useless skill (preserve humidity) / lsh: but dokja-ssi also has this skill / yjh: kdj has this skill?? *contemplates buying it* |||| SIDE STORY: lhh: this guy (kdj) actually purchased a useless item? (neck pillow) / kdj: but yjh also has this neck pillow / lhh: yjh has this pillow? *after learning its advantages thinks it's a good item* (also kr fans speculate that it was kdj himself the one who bought a neck pillow for yjh)

kdj sits in the lobby of a hotel casino, waiting while christina provides refreshments and assures him that anna will come soon. honestly, lhh had expected kdj to make a scene. this is how dkos operates. and as sponsorships rain down, he knows that this world rewards scenes like these. but... when martinez had asked for a name, and kdj said 'cheon inho', martinez's reaction was odd. his expression changed, and he left shortly after. which is weird. there's no way his name would have spread to las vegas? there's plently of more famous koreans than cheon inho.

people begin bringing in the 4th grade dragon's parts, and eventually selena kim starts talking with kdj. it's still a little messy, and selena mentions that she only recently moved from the washington dome. when kdj asks about the situation in the washington dome, selena's expression is dark. did something happen..? lhh asks kdj if the las vegas dome is usually open. more domes are opened or extra incarnations are summoned in based on population, so the dome itself isn't a problem, but the restriction on movement between countries was lifted, which isn't normal.

originally, the domes are only released after the 10th scenario, but something about the united states' 7th scenario was so hard that the bureau judged that the american incarnations alone couldn't beat it, and mercenaries from other countries had to be brought in... apparently, yjh and his party are in the washington dome.

after kdj asks about yjh's whereabouts, selena is curious and asks if he's close with yjh. his response?

"we were companions separated by life and death."

(the original tl of this line isn't the best, it's more like "we are companions have been through life and death separately", but the big thing is the change from present to past tense. kim dokja...)

selena takes kdj on a tour of the hotel. i've talked about it already here

now, about those plants. looking at the yanaspleta being grown there, the soil it's growing on isn't from earth. it's soil from the 5th scenario, when other worlds invaded the earth. which is odd... the soil should have disappeared after the 5th scenario was cleared. so why is that dirt still there? kdj looks at the 4th grade monster's organs, and starts talking.

it's weird. this '4th grade earth dragon' isn't cost effective to buy. the material is hard to process, and its sharpness is inferior. it's much better to buy the bones of a '5th grade fire dragon', even if it's technically lesser. but anna would have known that. so, knowingly buying this, there should have been a reason. kim dokja picks up some powder that fell during the processing the of the monster parts. and sprinkles it on the otherworldly soil, as it purifies. everyone in the hall stops then, and some incarnations reach for their weapons.

kdj's eyes are cold. he still considers selena kim a good person, and tells her so. if she answers his questions, nothing will happen here. anna's not here, is she? selena confirms it, and apologizes. where's anna right now? and... did they really clear the 5th scenario normally?

right then, there's noise from the hotel's entrance. constellations from asgard enter the channel. a portal opens, and as they move to the portal, anna croft arrives, her left arm bleeding. as selena prepares a tourniquet, anna asks if selena bought the dragon parts. selena affirms, but anna shakes her head. and says it's too late. that the operation was a failure. lee hakhyun organizes everything in his head. the 4th grade species with its purification properties, the washington dome, the scenario, and... his companions. why did anna croft return alone? it couldn't be..?

and lee hakhyun wasn't the only one to piece it together.

"Anna Croft." Anna Croft's expression hardened the moment she heard that voice. Her neck stiff, she slowly turned this way. "You... how are you here?" "Where is Yoo Joonghyuk right now?" What happened to Yoo Joonghyuk." was genuinely angry.

love as an act of consumption in omniscient reader's viewpoint... the obvious example of kdj consuming twsa to survive, but also 1863rd hsy letting herself and the world be consumed because she loves kdj and wants to keep him alive. lsy offering her own story to the masses because she (incorrectly) thought it would help dokja. dokja only understanding her and deciding to try and have a relationship with her when shes consumed by fourth wall. od offering up body parts to help yjh. persephone, who becomes dokjas mother, introducing the concept of stories being sustanence. 999 being the lifetime where yjh decided to live for others, and hes also the kkoma who cooks dumplings for kdj. i just love how orv compares stories to food as something that not only keeps us alive but can have flavor and texture and be a comfort. and then theres the underlaying irony of yjh, the character controlled by the story, being a chef. he prepares the sustanence for others. but he also loves food and takes pride in it. he becomes his own person and he cooks for himself. can anyone hear me its dark in here.

I'm well aware most of these analysis are only towards the trio of the novel.. I wish we can see more of the other characters :(

He lied, lyingly, like a liar.

i haven't emphasized enough just how bad this will be for lhh's mental state. that fate dkos got? it was supposed to be lee hakhyun's.

asgard's fate was originally targeted at lhh, but kdj pushes his soul away and took the fate instead. lhh immediately picks up what's going to happen and tries to stop him. this is supposed to be his fate... he turns and sees christina page. she's looking at him with guilt, as her fingers move and lhh blacks out. dkos had made a deal with christina to do him a favour and he'd save her friends... and so he made her knock lhh out.

with the help of the dark keeper and the insane amounts of probability in the area, kim dokja is able to fully appear in the scenarios. the body he appeared in is full of scars from the dark keeper's fight with yoo joonghyuk, but the important part was that kdj is here. the constellations that were originally chasing lhh surround kdj.

kdj thinks about his maknae. he's weird, being the one kim dokja who knows how to write. it was interesting to see how he awkwardly followed kdj's footsteps, and how he did things different from kdj, though sometimes he got frustrated. still, it was fun to see his story. maybe that's why he's here now.

searching his coat pocket, he finds some cigarettes. while smoking, he combs through his scattered memories, the missing memories painful to him... yet the pain proves that he is kim dokja.

the constellations rush in to kill him. he fights back, but with every clash he ends up with more and more wounds. an arrow in his shoulder, a spear in his thigh. his wings are cut off, and fall to the ground.

this world is a tragedy, created solely to inflict pain on yoo joonghyuk. with endless failures and despair, the world was destined for him.

anyone who would try to share that responsibility would be cursed to the same fate.

as his wing hit the ground, lighting lights up the sky. another star falls in the distant sky. he should be the emotionless dkos, but in this moment, he's still kim dokja. he speaks out loud, asking if yjh fighting as well. yjh cannot reply, just as words written on a monitor do not reply. some communication never occurs. where communication is impossible, there is merely a story. and the demon king of salvation lives to read that story.

dkos laughs, as if he had accepted a punishment.
