Fandom Etiquette

I’ve been around for a really long time in various fandoms, and no one ever writes this stuff down. I’ll start. Please add to the list. We can’t expect people to follow “rules” they don’t know exist.

Fanart

if you like something, reblog it. Help the artist get their work out there in front of more people. Share the joy that it brought you. 

if you want more of it, support it. This can be via commissions, reblogs, recommending the artist to other people, shouting in the tags, or sending the artist asks/messages. 

if you hate it, keep scrolling. Keep the hate in a message window with a friend, not in the artist’s notes. 

if you want to use it, ask permission. Artwork is beautiful and you want to show it off. But please ask the artist before you throw it into your header or your icon. 

if you use it, give credit. And not just a post where you say “Do you like my new icon? X made it!”. Put it in your blog description, that way when someone rolls around your blog three months from now, they also know where your icon/header came from. 

if you appreciate it, don’t repost it. Reblog the artist’s post instead of making one of your own. Let them see all of the excited tags in the reblogs and replies or commentary that people add on. If you come across something on a google image search, try to trace it back to the owner. If someone tells you who the artist is, credit them - but also try to find and reblog their original post.

Fanfic

if you like something, reblog it. Help the author get their work out there in front of more people. Share the joy that it brought you.

if you want more of it, support it. Kudos are great, but if you want more of the thing you like, you should comment. Subscribe to the story or the author. Send them a message about how much you like what they wrote. 

if you read it, kudos it. Or give it a thumbs up. If you want the author to write more things like that, let them know - even if you can’t comment! 

don’t demand content. Be patient. Stories take time. You can encourage without being demanding. Show your love for what’s there without telling them to post more often. 

be gentle with criticism. Some people want it and some people run away from it. If you don’t know what type of person the author is, it’s best not to go there. “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything.”

Fandom

ship and let ship. You love your ship and other people love theirs. No one needs to “win” when we’re all going to end up in tears anyway. 

if you hate it, stay out of the tag. This has two meanings: 1) don’t deliberately put hateful commentary in a tag and 2) if you  hate a tag, don’t go and read through that tag just to make yourself angry

if someone makes you something, appreciate it. Read and comment the fic. Like and reblog the artwork. Pimp it out and tell them how much you loved it. It’s a gift, treat it like one. 

if it’s a gift, put some effort into it. You signed up for that exchange three months ago and now it’s a week before you have to send the gift and you don’t have the time or the inclination to do the thing. Well too bad. Someone out there has been working hard in your gift, so you should do the same for them. 

none of us are “better” than anyone else. We’re all trash for our particular show/film/book/ship/artist/what-have-you. My fave is no better than yours and yours is no better than mine. 

actors are not their characters. They are people. Treat them like people. 

Hi I’m pissed because I saw a manga spoiler in a TikTok video comment section because people don’t like a ship. So rant time

First of all, it’s all fictional. No one is getting hurt in these ships. Because, you know, they’re fictional ships.

What happened to “don’t like don’t read” like come on, it’s so easy to just, I don’t know, IGNORE?! Don’t like, don’t interact.

Second of all, what gives you the right to ruin the experience for others? And for what?

Not only is it rude and an asshole move, but it only strengthens the person’s conviction to keep doing what they’re doing. Trust me.

Third of all, the ship you don’t like is actually legal now. Is it still wrong cause of the parental role of one figure? Maybe. But that’s also NOT your call.

Fourth of all, people are entitled to their own opinions. And if it is not hurting you or anyone else tangible, it’s not your place to get upset.

Finally, I don’t even canonically ship them (yes I’m talking about Ereri). I canonically ship Eruri but read aged up fanfiction about Ereri with a smaller age gap cause I like the character dynamics. Wtf, people.

You’re being petty over a fictional ship and ruining the experience for others. Let people enjoy things.

People can, and have, shipped worse and will not stop because you tell them to. You’re just being mean for no reason.

The description and tags for Bitter Transmutation literally just checked off basically all my boxes for my favorite types of Drarry fics. You’re telling me it’s an 8th year fic AND Draco’s a Veela???? Fuck yes

hell ya it’s that time of the week. we got 8th year fics, animagus fics, draco harnessing the magic of shooting stars, shepherd harry being unbearably tender and hot, flirtatious holiday office parties, the drarry multi-verse told in wistful dreams! eat up, fellow yearners.

Bitter Transmutation : Cruel Transformation by @dorthyanndrarry​ - 103k, M The terms of Draco’s probation require him to finish his final year of schooling, he just wants to survive with what little dignity he has left, in face of students that hate him, falling behind on his school work, and all the strange fevers and weakness and changes… that only seem to be getting worse.

draco wants to be good. harry wants to be needed. it’s an 8th year veela fic but rly it’s draco learning to humanize others and himself via shitty creature-puberty and harry trying not to run away from his feelings. all the non-sexual intimacy and general tenderness in this fic is comforting as hell.

Owl Was Well by @fencer-x (an @hd-erised​ fic) - 66k, T Draco Malfoy is not an owl, really he isn’t. He simply assumes the shape of one on occasion when he wants to find a bit of privacy—a goal entirely thwarted because Harry Potter doesn’t understand you can’t just grab any old bird from the Owlery and force it to send your missives and deliver your packages.

god i love a truly prickly draco and a disgustingly earnest harry bc the combination breeds emotional chaos. 8th yr animagus draco going out of his way to fuck with harry only to Catch Feelings — a trope i live and die for. they’re both very scrappy in this. lots of dancing around their big mutual gay crush as they grow to begrudgingly respect each other. i personally would love the opportunity to tell off the object of my affection right before kissing them furiously.

Wish Upon a Star (As Dreamers Do) by @icmezzo - 27k, M There’s plant magic and celestial magic and dark magic and the normal magic that allows Harry to use a spell to clean his socks when Myrtle’s taken up in his laundry room again. Then there are wishes, and dreams, and love, and those are even more magical still.

harry helps out at hogwarts but mcgonagall’s asked him for help with a spell that has him fully stumped and of course he’s too proud to ask literal-wishmaker draco for help but he’s desperate and curious! there’s this breathtaking scene in a field where draco collects meteor dust beneath an endless night sky. we all lose our shit. harrys flustered bc it’s very magical and very hot of draco. feat. neville’s greenhouse, the rambunctious ghosts of grimmauld place including moody & cedric, stargazing with ur crush. literally what’s not to love.

Through the May Air, Over the Ocean by @tsauergrass​ - 44k, T Draco Malfoy never expected to find himself in Scotland or being stuck in a cottage with Potter—but wonders never cease. A story about warmth, a story about falling back in love. A story about a flock of sheep in the distant fells of Scotland.

two lonely men in the middle of idyllic shepherd pastures learning how to navigate their grief and longing for companionship. an elegiac masterpiece of a fic. there are moments so quiet and tender it aches. you want their growing love to be easy but it’s rife with mourning and fear. it makes the ending that much sweeter and earned. (also yes this was a re-read but it’s december and i live in the pacific, world of perpetual summer and humidity, so mentally i needed to be in the vastness of wintry scotland. hell ya atmospheric fics!!)

To Tame A Kitten (is to love) by @tsauergrass​ - 13k, G After the war, Harry finds solace in fostering orphaned kittens. One day, a kitten appears on his door step without explanation—and attacks him! Taking it in, he quickly finds that this kitten is nothing ordinary.

another tsauergrass rec bc im a hoe for poetic melancholy and tentative intimacy. the premise of this fic screams fluff but then you’re unexpectedly hit with harry’s longing for affection as he tries to find places to pour all that guileless love spilling out of him. the image of him smiling sadly makes me emo as hell. but rly his and draco’s loneliness are concentric circles so this is all eventually solved with hella cuddling. “I know…It’s tiring. But there are a lot of beautiful things, too” — destroyed me.

Sweet Indulgence by @the-sinking-ship​ - 10k, E It doesn’t matter that Marcy from Accounting is dancing on the tables, Shacklebolt is wearing antlers, and Elliot from Transportation is on his third round of Mariah Carey on karaoke because all the free champagne in the world won’t salvage the Ministry Christmas party for Draco if Potter doesn’t show up soon.

lecherous unhinged draco is sometimes the only characterization i care about skkdkd. most dramatic bitch alive whom i personally would die for. you must simply respect the flirtatious hustle. the promiscuous licking of a gingerbread man in the shape of ur crush, pouring champagne down their shirt, doing whatever it takes to make them laugh. it’s galaxy-brain courting bc harry is Charmed. we love our fics sexy and hysterical tbh.

Our Little Life by @tackytigerfic​ - 7k, M Sometimes Harry dreams. Only they’re not really dreams at all, and Malfoy is always in them. It’s time travel, but not as we know it, and Harry just needs a good night’s sleep.

when i say star-crossed lovers i mean this fic in its entirety i mean harry saying “I see how things could be for us, I see it all the time” i mean that part in gaudy night when lord peter tells harriet “Give me your hand, and we’ll fight on until we drop.” a thousand iterations of drarry coming together (which, extremely meta) and all that world-building in under 10k words? the skill.

I will die on the hill that Drarry and Dramione are not even close to similar. While on the outside they may seem similar: one of the a golden trio with Draco, they are not. There’s more to a ship than just those dynamics.

First is looking at the histories between Draco and Harry vs Draco and Hermione. Draco and Harry had a lot more interactions and more of a rivalry than Draco and Hermione ever did.

Second is recognizing that Harry and Hermione are NOT the same character. Not even close.

I understand where people are coming from when they say the two are similar, they only look on the surface level. But every shipper knows there’s more to it than that. Dramione is not just straight Drarry.

So... is it just me or do Levi (Attack on Titan) and Perry the Platypus (Phineas and Ferb) have the same vibe?

I’d like to point out that for the AO3 ship stats, Drarry is 6th in number of new works.

Can we talk about how amazing it is that even though Harry Potter is older that the fandom is still so active? There are also a bunch of other HP ships in the top 100.

My sister has taken three separate sorting quizzes to convince us that she isn’t Slytherin. And if that isn’t the most Slytherin thing to do...

She’s still in the phase of “Slytherin is evil” and I’m trying to break her out of that.

Draco Malfoy as a self insert

Should I be worried that Draco Malfoy is my self-insert when I write fanfiction. Like not the suave, toxic, kind-of-an-asshole but sexy Draco Malfoy that the (teenage) fandom seems to headcanon, but a post-war, repentant, depressed, emotional and prone to lash out Draco Malfoy. Am I broken? Probably. Fuck.

Can we talk about how some of the best fanfictions put there are 10,000-30,000 words?

Sure the full novel + fics are amazing. Shorter fics are beautiful. But fics of the 10,000-30,000 word range just hit different. They’re full stories compacted into a few chapters with the most amazingly written words. Absolutely love.

Sequel to “From Prince to Pet”

I worked on this briefly over the semester but never quite finished it. It’s not as kinky as the first one, but I did pack it full of feelings. So, in honor of finally finishing my finals, I finished and posted it. I hope you all like it! Real quick can we talk about how some of the best written females in Shōnen are from FAIRY TAIL.

Like the fan service of that show, out of control, flat out makes me uncomfortable sometimes. But the amount of development female characters get? Amazing. Some of the best. My Hero Academia could never.

Jellal was introduced to further ERZA’s character development. How weird is that? It’s normally the other way around.

Can mangakas just figure out how to write female characters for once in their life? It’s not that hard. Just write them as if they were men.

Can we talk about how canonically some of the UA students probably have fanfiction written about them in their universe?

Heros are so publicized that fanboys (like Izuku) probably write fanfiction about them. Couple that with the coverage that Class 1-A gets, their internship with pros where they’re seen by the public eye and the sport’s festival and some hero fan 100% writes fanfiction about them.

I think I chose to be a math major cause I’m a masochist. There’s no other explanation.

I miss when I was a preteen and poor grammar/ writing didn’t bother me at all in fanfiction.

A quick note to fellow Enemies to Lovers shippers,

(Especially younger ones)

I hate to break it to you, but you have to stop arguing with people who disagree with your ship online. (For more reasons than that it causes a toxic fanbase.) You aren't going to convince the people actively against your ship.

I know it's hard, especially because it's not just that people don't like it, but because people likely actively hate and work against your ship. Unfortunately, that's because by nature, you're shipping ENEMIES to lovers. When two characters start off opposing each other, especially with one character blatantly in the wrong, people have a hard time accepting the two could ever see eye to eye let alone fall in love.

Basically, it comes down to this:

A lot of people don't believe that others have the capacity to change. Afterall, the whole dynamic of enemies to lovers relies heavily on there being some huge change in both of their mindsets.

In shipping dynamics, I find that the people who fall into this trap of stagnant mindsets are young highschool and midderschoolers. They're probably very focused on the there and now and don't think things will change much outside of their very small worldview. They're in an awkward place where they have been heavily influenced by the few strong opinions they've experienced since birth. They haven't seen how different the world outside their bubble is. Most importantly, they're not going to suddenly change their mind on your ship. (But don't worry, they will grow.)

The truth is, people in real life marry their bullies. They switch sides in wartime for reasons other than self-interest, they reflect on their actions and with help realize what they were doing was wrong. Apologies exist for a reason. What happens in middle or high school is not the end.

Tldr, People CAN and DO change as they grow and as an enemies to lover shipper you see that. It's hard for a lot of people to accept this and your arguments aren't going to change that, only time can. So step out of shipping wars and enjoy your ship with everyone else that ships it.

It's better if you ignore it. Trust me, I ship Drarry.

Can we bring back The Game?

For people who don’t know, there is no way to win The Game. You can only lose. And you lose by thinking about it. When you lose, you announce “I lost the game” and therefore everyone else around you loses as well.

I just feel like this is a fun little part of how I grew up that we should pass into kids today. Let’s bring back people shouting “I lost the game!” In class.
