I think what anon is referring to is not the coining of the term nonbinary itself, but instead the person who made the nonbinary flag. Here's one of the posts stating why they pushed for the term and flag.

can I add just remember non-binary got made because “too many” afab genderqueer people were in the tags so it was made for amab ones.?? Still don’t know how any of that worked but I will never use nb over genderqueer after finding that out

I was trying to look into this but couldn't find anything indicating that. Would you mind sharing where you heard that from? The term seems to have been coined on its own but not popularized until the 2010s or so; I wouldn't be surprised if negative sentiment towards people afab identifying as genderqueer heavily contributed to that popularity considering how certain people have talked about us. But I'd still like to find that information for myself if you have any direction towards it.

U ever notice that the trans archetypes the things that become big talking points and we have endless sludge discourse over forever are all always centered around trans women and what they do or don't do or what they like or don't like. have you ever seen anyone argue that a trans man binding or changing his posture & body language or getting gender affirming surgery is giving into sexist stereotypes? I haven't. Have you seen transmascs, their interests, their hobbies and their community, turned into prepackaged archetypes to crack unfunny jokes about like trans women are? I haven't. and i've certainly never seen people pound their fists loudly about how dangerous and fundamentally unsafe transmascs are, how they shouldn't be allowed in childcare or healthcare or working with women. I think literally every single creator or blogger i've followed who's been unpersoned in public consciousness overnight has been transfem It must be nice to simply be. It must be nice to not have to scrutinize yourself every second of every day, to not have the knowledge that everyone around you has such an easy way to turn you into a joke or a danger, and if they don't then they can invent one.

This is a false equivalency.

The term for somebody who is transfem and who is oppressed for being transfem—is transfem. Intersex people are intersex. Transfem people are transfem. Perisex people are not intersex. Non-transfem people are not transfem.

TMA/TME is more closely equivalent to if I said IA/IE (intersexism applicable/intersexism exempt).

The reason TMA/TME is problematic is because it fails to acknowledge that non-transfem people can be impacted my transmisogyny—the same way perisex transfems can be impacted by intersexism. And also because it completely ignores the existence of the oppression transmascs experience, categorising them in with their oppressors. The TMA/TME binary is problematic because it collapses complex interplays of oppression into one binary system.

If you want a word for somebody who is transfem and impacted by transfem oppression in the way somebody who is transfem would be? The term is transfem.

“Transfems really are the only people who can’t have terms for their own oppression” I have a question. How do you feel about the term “transandrophobia?” How would you feel about the terms “TAA” and “TAE” (transandrophobia applicable and transandrophobia exempt)? If you’re okay with those terms, I’ll eat my words (somehwhat, it’s still weird, but at least you’re okay with it across the board). If you’re not—why? Do you think trans men don’t experience specific oppression? Is your issue just with who coined it? How do you feel about the term transemasculinisation? Anti-transmasculinity? Please consider why you think it’s okay to restrict the language transmascs use to describe their oppression.

Further, why not make it TMNA/TMNE (transmisogynoir applicable and transmisogynoir exempt)? Black trans women absolutely face the highest rates of assault (assuming black trans men aren’t being erased in the statistics, which is a big assumption). If you’re talking about systems of oppression… why not consider the most impactful axes? Why only consider the axis of man/woman? Consider what this says about the proximity of your theory to radical feminism.

I want to send you the most sincere thanks. When I initially started following you, I considered myself nonbinary, with no masc or fem leanings at all. But watching your defense of transmasc people, making sure that your blog is a safe place for all transmascs, and the reassurances that there's nothing *wrong* with being transmasc made me realize things about myself that I'd been subconsciously repressing. I'm pleased to say now that I'm transmasc nonbinary, and will be starting T as soon as I can manage it. Thank you for helping me find myself.

this might just be because i'm a tee-em-ee or wtv but personally. if i'm being 100% genuine. i think "transmascs have an innate biological want to return to their birth sex and become terfs" is more bioessentialist than "transfems are capable of hurting other people because transfems are people, and people are capable of hurting others"
