Fumito Ueda was inspired by… The Castle of Cagliostro.

Ueda was 9 years old when Cagliostro came out. The greatest artist in game development standing on the shoulders of the greatest artist in animated film production, Hayao Miyazaki.

Things that happen in The Castle of Cagliostro that also feature in Ico -

The girl is a prisoner in the castle.

The Shadowmen are like the shadow creatures.

Lupin falls through a trap door down into the bowels of the castle and then makes his way all the way back up to rescue the girl.

She saves him from falling (which also happens in Kiki’s Delivery Service).

Clarisse has been drugged to make her mute whereas Yorda is more completely silenced.

At the end, the tower comes crashing down into the water and the castle floods.
