Child's Sock From Egypt, C.250-350 CE: This Colorful Sock Is Nearly 1,700 Years Old

This sock was discovered during excavations in the ancient city of Oxyrhynchus. It was likely created for a child during the late Roman period, c.250-350 CE.

Similar-looking socks from late antiquity and the early Byzantine period have also been found at several other sites throughout Egypt; these socks often have colorful, striped patterns with divided toes, and they were crafted out of wool using a technique known as nålbinding.

Above: a similar child's sock from Antinoöpolis, c.250-350 CE

The sock depicted above was created during the same period, and it was found in a midden heap (an ancient rubbish pit) in the city of Antinoöpolis. A multispectral imaging analysis of this sock yielded some interesting results back in 2018, as this article explains:

... analysis revealed that the sock contained seven hues of wool yarn woven together in a meticulous, stripy pattern. Just three natural, plant-based dyes—madder roots for red, woad leaves for blue and weld flowers for yellow—were used to create the different color combinations featured on the sock, according to Joanne Dyer, lead author of the study.

In the paper, she and her co-authors explain that the imaging technique also revealed how the colors were mixed to create hues of green, purple and orange: In some cases, fibers of different colors were spun together; in others, individual yarns went through multiple dye baths.

Such intricacy is pretty impressive, considering that the ancient sock is both “tiny” and “fragile."

Given its size and orientation, the researchers believe it may have been worn on a child’s left foot.

The ancient Egyptians employed a single-needle looping technique, often referred to as nålbindning, to create their socks. Notably, the approach could be used to separate the big toe and four other toes in the sock—which just may have given life to the ever-controversial socks-and-sandals trend.

Mid-Sem update:

Media, Culture & Society ✅️

done. i am finally done with exams.

Now, I'll be taking a break. I'll be offline for a few days — just need to breathe, take care of my life a little, and figure out some stuff for this summer. Vacation officially starts 1st may. I'll see you guys then.

also. story time.

I got back home after the exam — and literally 15 minutes later — had to run back to college for my Botany practical exams. They didn’t notify us, didn’t inform us, just scheduled it like it was no big deal. We showed up, and they handed us the materials right then and there and told us to study on the spot before taking the exam.

and guess what? I did. and not to brag, but… i aced it. 😂

Hi, it's future me.

so... I kind of forgot to post this. I did write it — it just somehow ended up in my drafts, and then I didn’t open tumblr for like… a week. And now I’m posting it late. Disappointed.

100 Days of Productivity: What I Learned and My Tips for You

Here’s the thing about being productive: it’s not just about checking boxes and crossing off to-do lists. It’s about navigating life and learning how to work with yourself, not against yourself.

Don’t stay in your room 3 days in a row. Just don’t. Get some air, see the sun, touch grass—anything!

If stress shuts you down, don’t drink coffee. Seriously, it makes things worse. Trust me on this one.

Talk to a friend and work together. Sure, maybe you’ll chat all day and not stay 100% focused, but those conversations keep you motivated and positive in the long run.

Talk to your supervisor about your struggles. They’re there to help, even if it’s hard to ask.

Reach out to people who don’t include you in their group. Maybe they’re not being mean—maybe they’re just scared or unsure because you’re different from them. Don’t let assumptions keep you from trying.

Don’t over-schedule your day. Small, consistent steps every day are way better than big, scattered bursts of productivity.

Celebrate wins. Treat yourself. Go to that bookshop you’ve been eyeing. You’ve earned it.

Forgive people. It’s tough in the immediate aftermath, and honestly, I never thought I’d be the forgiving type. But when you step away from the situation, you’ll realize forgiveness isn’t for them—it’s for you and your mental health.

Take a few minutes every day to reflect on your mental health and journal. It’s not a waste of time, I promise.

Don’t break good habits on a whim. It takes forever to rebuild them. Whether it’s going to bed early or reading for 30 minutes a day, stick with it.

Follow the system that works for you. Don’t overrule it just because you’re tempted to. Getting back on track after derailing yourself is painful.

Oh, and stop comparing yourself to your more successful peers. (Still working on this one myself, but hey, baby steps!)

also take ur meds and excercise at least 3 times a week... otherwise u will crumble and u wont even see it coming...

Don't berate urself ... come on.. it doesn't work... work on eliminating that negative voice in ur head... ( I am still working on it)

My eating disorder is alright now... I dont force myself to eat anymore and just let my body decide when it needs food... I have been getting hungry so thats a good sign...

This challenge wasn’t easy, but it taught me so much about patience, resilience, and the importance of showing up for myself. I hope these tips help you in your journey, whether you’re just starting or somewhere in the middle.

Also I just want to say, I love u all... I really do... u guys r so sweet and encouraging... I am so glad I found this community😘😘

New Words Of Wonder!

New Words of Wonder!

I must not lie down. Lying down after school is the day-killer. Lying down is the little treat that brings total obliteration. I will face my exhaustion. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when I have made coffee, I will turn on the computer to do emails. Once lying down is gone there will be nothing. Only homework will remain.
