“Anger Is A Signal, And One Worth Listening To. Our Anger May Be A Message That We Are Being Hurt,

“Anger is a signal, and one worth listening to. Our anger may be a message that we are being hurt, that our rights are being violated, that our needs or wants are not being adequately met, or simply that something is not right. Our anger may tell us that we are not addressing an important emotional issue in our lives, or that too much of our self–our belief, values, desires, or ambitions–is being compromised in a relationship. Our anger may be a signal that we are doing more and giving more than we can comfortably do or give. Or our anger may warn us that others are doing too much for us, at the expense of our own competence and growth. Just as physical pain tells us to take our hand off the hot stove, the pain of our anger preserves the very integrity of our self. Our anger can motivate us to say “no” to the ways in which we are defined by others and “yes” to the dictates of our inner self."

So a few months ago I learned that when you have ADD/ADHD, in order to efficiently manage it (and thus reduce the stress that comes with it), you need to concentrate on four things:

Sleep Nutrition Activity Personal time/space

OH HEY GUYS LOOK AN ACRONYM THAT’S ACTUALLY EASY TO REMEMBER!

SNAP

Do you feel yucky and aren’t sure why? Look at your SNAP. Figure out what you’re missing.

Are you getting enough sleep?

Are you eating enough, and is what you’re eating mostly made of nutritious foods?

Are you getting enough physical activity?

Are you getting enough alone time to decompress, to reset your sensory overload, to spend time in your head, and relax?

I have found that 1) I feel so, so much better when I’m actively putting effort into my SNAP, and 2) if I feel weird, it’s way easier to narrow down what might be the problem by asking myself those questions.

10/10 would recommend.

I know covid 19 has been going on for long. It is terrible and I hope with all my heart that it is over soon. I want you to know that following the restrictions save lives, and it’s okay if they make you sad. It’s okay if everything seems harder now than in the first months. We have been in this a long time and now it’s (for some of us atleast) very dark outside. It is hard. It is lonely, but we got to keep on going. We will make it. There is light ahead with vaccines. More and more restrictions may be added, dependent on where we each live. It will be okay again. Hang in there. For what it is worth: You are not alone and your feelings are valid. It’s scary and it may be getting to you a lot more now as the months went on. Winter is already a tough season for many people. Adding covid 19 on top of that? That is a lot. Do not beat yourself up. Hang in there, do what you can to take care of yourself and talk to someone.

We will make it through. It will be hard, but we will make it. 🌸

Oh gosh, that feel. Figuring out when my "back off" anger is appropriate or an overreaction is something I still struggle with.

I almost always check what other people think, to see how my reactions correspond ... But some of the people around me have issues with boundaries, too, so that isn't always a reliable measure. Sometimes, negative stuff gets normalized, and that's hard.

But I'm getting to the point where I'll stick to my own opinion even if someone else says I'm overreacting. Because the thing is, even if something is "objectively" okay, it might not be okay for ME. And my individual needs & preferences are important.

The people in my life should care about and respect what I need. And if they don't want to, that's their shortcoming, not mine.

I’m so wary of people in my life and I feel like they are violating my space and privacy (if that’s true then that’s fucked up???) I can’t tell if I’m being paranoid but it’s causing me so much discomfort that I just want everyone to leave!! me!! alone!!!

there’s no rule as to how big or how small you’re allowed to dream. if you just want a small home and an orange kitchen and four cats that’s just as reasonable of a goal to work for as a big new york penthouse. and if all you really want is a simplistic career that isn’t the center of your life then that’s just as valid as dreaming of becoming a famous fashion designer or ceo. i know everyone keeps urging you to dream big, but dreams can be as simple and small as you want. they’ll always be valid. you decide how you want to live and what kind of life you want, no one else.

It’s really strange to be putting this stuff out there.

Actually, it’s strange to be compiling everything in my head about Getting Better and packing it into good old-fashioned text posts -- but also really, to be putting it out where people can read it.

Like, poster child of AvPD... (well, recovering poster child...) pulls out a bunch of really, incredibly super vulnerable stuff and sticks it on the internet for all to see

It’s kind of terrifying but also liberating? Like, maybe this stuff isn’t Just Me? Like ... maybe it’s actually relevant for other people? Or at least thought-provoking enough to be worth reading, even if it doesn’t apply.

(Also, this is literally the most attention I’ve ever gotten in my 3.5 years of tumblr. squeaks and hides)

One of the most challenging things I’ve had to learn is that healing must be intentional. There is no one golden day that comes and saves you from all your misery. Healing is a practice. You have to decide that it’s what you want to do and actively do it. You have to make a habit out of it. Once I learned that, I only looked back to see how far I came.
