Atlas: Is he gone? Asher: Yes. Atlas: What was he doing here? Did you invite him? Asher: I told him I’d help him with training Milo, and we thought it’d be better to do it while Iris and Spencer aren’t here so there’d be less distractions. Atlas: You looked pretty distracted to me.
Asher: [exasperated sigh] Yes, we got to talking after, I’m sorry. But, Atlas, I can’ t keep doing this. Being stuck between you and my sister, it fucking sucks, and I can’t do it anymore. Atlas: What are you talking about? I don’t care what you do with your sister.
Asher: I mean, Ezra is her boyfriend, so she wants me to be friendly and get to know him. But you hate him and want me stay away from him. I can’t fucking win. Atlas: Well, I don’t know what to tell you, Ash. You can’t always make everyone happy. Sometimes you have to make a choice and deal with the fact that someone will be pissed off. And you’ve clearly already made your choice, so I don’t know what you want from me.
Asher: You know what I want? I want you to stop hiding away and stewing. I want you to talk to him, to make an effort. Atlas: Why should I? And why is it up to me? If anyone should be making an effort, it’s him! Asher: He wants to! But you’ve made it very clear that he’s not welcome. He can’t properly apologize and make amends unless you make space for him to be able to talk to you.
Atlas: I tried that already, remember? He wasn’t exactly apologetic. Asher: Look, I know things didn’t go well the first time, and normally I wouldn’t push you to try again. I’d say, “fuck him and what he did, you don’t owe him anything.” But under the circumstances, I’m afraid you don’t have that luxury. Whether you like it or not, he’s family now.
Atlas: Family?! Are you kidding me? Asher: No, I’m not. Iris is pregnant. Atlas: [scoffs] Unbelievable. He did this on purpose. Asher: Oh my god, do you hear yourself?
Atlas: Don’t you see what’s happening? He’s sinking his claws in and now we’re fighting and you’re defending him and it’s happening all over again. Don’t you see? This is what he does!
Asher: Did it ever occur to you that not everything he does is about you? That was years ago! You’re not teenagers anymore! Atlas: I know that!
Asher: Then grow up and stop acting like one!
[Opens the door, then slams it closed] Asher: [under his breath] Goddammit. Atlas: … Asher: …
Atlas: [scoffs] Asher: What? Atlas: I’ve never met anyone more committed to keeping a promise than you. Asher: Yeah well, what’s the point of a promise if you only keep it when it’s easy? Atlas: You can go. If you really want to. Asher: [shakes his head] Nah. The moment has passed now, hasn’t it?
Atlas: … Asher: …
Asher: I don’t want to fight anymore. I hate fighting. Atlas: I don’t want to fight either. Asher: Can I come sit with you? Atlas: [nods]
Asher: Let’s talk, okay? Help me understand.
Atlas: I don’t know if you can. You don’t know what it was like. I know you think everyone deserves a second chance, and you want everyone to get along, but I can’t do it. All I see when I look at him is the way everyone looked at me then, the way Henry looked at me, like I was monster, just for loving him. And seeing Ezra here now, it feels so invasive. [sighs] Just when everything in my life was falling into place. For the first time I’m excited for the future. And it’s like the Universe, or whatever, realized they’d forgotten about me, they suddenly remembered I’m not meant to have any of this, so now they’re correcting their mistake by sending him to take it all away again.
Atlas: I know that sounds stupid, but I don’t know how else to explain it. Asher: It’s not stupid. I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have tried to push you. You’re right, I got caught up in wanting everyone to get along, to get rid of all this tension, and I diminished your feelings in the process. It was really shitty, and I’m sorry. Atlas: … Asher: I’m here, okay? I’m in your corner, and I’m not going anywhere, I promise. Atlas: [nods] Okay.
Asher: How can I support you? Atlas: I don’t know. I just wish we could fast forward time to the day when we can finally move out of this house, when we can live our life, and they can live theirs, and I don’t have to have him in my space anymore. Asher: We just need to get through, what, like six more months? Atlas: Something like that.
Asher: Well, look, there’s no reason Ezra needs to come over here. Iris can go to his house. If they want to spend time with Spencer, then they can take her to the park or the beach or something. I’ll talk to Iris and ask her not to bring him around anymore. She can do that for six months. Atlas: She’ll never agree to that. If only to spite me. Asher: She might surprise you. She’s not always good at showing it, but she does care about you.
Asher: There is a good chance, though, that he’ll be invited for the holidays. For Harvestfest and Winterfest. Especially considering he has no other family. You know how my parents are. Atlas: So, what do we do? Asher: Winterfest with Dawn and Phoenix was fun last year. Maybe we spend the holidays with them instead? Atlas: You’d be willing to do that? Asher: Absolutely.
Atlas: Thank you… and thank you for staying. Asher: Of course. I always will. I promise.

Video Game Completed – Name: Oneironaut
Atlas: ASH!!!
Asher: Finally. Are you ready?
Asher: What was that for? Atlas: I finished. It’s done.
Asher: Oh my god, we did it? We fucking did it!!!
Asher: [laughing] Okay okay, put me down. We’re gonna be late.
Dawn: [offscreen] How did your appointment go. Asher: [offscreen] Great. Two healthy babies, everything looks good. Li: Ooh, they’re moving again. Atlas: Can I feel? Li: Of course!
Aspen: Whatta you doing? Asher: My babies are in there. I’m saying hello to them. Li: Do you want to say hi? Aspen: Hi!
Dawn: Ezra Ezra? Atlas: Yep. Dawn: He’s the last person I’d ever expect to leave. Did the town burn down or something? Atlas: [laughs] I don’t think so. Dawn: Wow. Good for him, I guess? Atlas: [shrugs] Dawn: How are you doing? It can’t be easy. Atlas: I’m fine.
Dawn: That bad, huh? Atlas: I said, I’m fine. Dawn: You only say you’re fine when things are really bad. Atlas: I say I’m fine when I don’t want to talk about it. Let’s not ruin a perfectly good day. Dawn: Okay. Dropping it. Atlas: Thank you. So, what’s new with you?
Dawn: Aspen finally started pre-school last week. Atlas: How’s that going? Dawn: Really well. I was able to get her into the same one as Mei. Having a friend there has really helped. She’s actually excited when I drop her off. Rude if you ask me. She could at least try to act sad when I leave. Atlas: Aw. I’m sure she’s just putting on a brave face, for your sake. Dawn: [laughs] That must be it.
Dawn: It’s good though. Now that she’s out of the house for most of the day, I’ve decided to go back to work. Atlas: Oh yeah? What are you going to do? Dawn: I’m going back to the Dreamer Foundation. Obviously, my old position wasn’t available, so I’ll just be doing, like, part-time administrative work. I don’t mind though. It’s low-stress and gets me out of the house. Eventually, I can work my way back up again. Atlas: That’s great. I’m happy for you.
Asher: I’m done. Your turn. Atlas: Are you tapping out already? Asher: Yep. I’m gonna throw my back out at this rate. Dawn: You know you don’t have to toss her around like that constantly. Asher: I know, but it makes her laugh and I’m a sucker for it.
Li: Are you sure you’re ready to have two little gremlins? Atlas: You mean aside from not having a house or a stable income yet? Li: Of course. Asher: We’ve never been more ready for anything. Cook ‘em faster, will ya? Atlas: Or not. We do actually need a house and a stable income. Asher: Yeah yeah.
Dawn: It’s getting late. We should get going. D’you want to come over for dinner before you head back? Atlas: No thanks. Kinda feel like relaxing here for a bit, maybe watching the sunset. Asher: Such a romantic. Atlas: [laughs] Oh yeah, that’s me. Dawn: Well, enjoy it. Let me know when you get home safe. Atlas: I will.
𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐬 | EPISODE NO. 1 "Goodbye Mama"
❧ 𝐚𝐥𝐥 / 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭.
welcome to a new and uncalled-for series, brought to you by Second Simblr Wind™ or whatever this is :^) i was flipping through 1992 to finally do a fashion rundown inspired by jennifer's analysis of her characters, and i realized 1) i was doing good work once upon a time but have improved a ton since and 2) my favorite shots often aren't the ones that get the most attention. so, here we are. i crave attention like everyone else on the internet, so questions, comments (of your favorites), and requests welcome. if you're new, go catch up !
𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭 ↓
01.01 - safya dies : I know this isn’t that standout shot from this post, but it is the one that I find the most striking. It may be the interplay between the dialogue and what’s happening, but the tentativeness of the gesture and the way her ring is conspicuously absent makes it noteworthy to me. I also just love shots constructed this way: side profile, cut off so the only expressiveness you see is the lower nose and mouth.
01.02 - leonor has a nightmare : It was hard to choose for this set. The runner-up was the close-up of Safya applying sunscreen with her ring very visible—which, of course, raises questions about why Leonor’s dream version is ring on versus ring off. There’s also a blue-brown contrast in this post, and that one exemplified it because Safya’s swimsuit is a pale pink that blends into her skin and the surrounding wood. HOWEVER. I chose this one because it’s just more visually interesting. There’s details, like Safya’s watercolors on the table, the way Rodrigo shadows her on the right margin, how she’s casting a backward look at him or us or both …
01.03 - arturo attempts to comfort leonor : Another color contrast scene! Blue versus orange, although, of course, Leonor’s thoughts are on the color red. There’s some analysis to be done on that alone, but I won’t bore everyone with half-baked ruminations on literary color theory or whatever, lmao. This one—! I actually had to redo this shot for some reason, but I was very insistent about getting it right. I guess it’s simple: this is child Leonor’s perspective of her mother. Emotional recollections and flashbacks are always more powerful when you can’t see someone’s face. Maybe that’s because we often struggle to remember people’s full faces as the memory of them fades over time. In any case…
01.04 - blanca helps beatriz bathe : This may be one of the tenderest shots in the entire story as it stands! Despite having helped care for younger siblings, I didn’t appreciate the fragility and intimacy of caregiving until my grandmother needed me to help her bathe, dress, clean her wounds, rub lotion into her feet, brush her hair … So, that’s what is being conveyed here. Obviously Beatriz is spry and capable, but it says something, to me, that she clearly must have asked this of Blanca. Is it something she’s done before? Is it something Safya would have done instead? The moment is tense in some ways, especially since Beatriz reprimands Blanca for her nail polish (contrasted with the, well, plain “elegance” of Beatriz’s hand here). It is, however, the most vulnerable we see Beatriz—even more so than when she’s openly sobbing in later scenes—and, to me, a visual representation of the unconditional love Blanca has for her mother.
01.05 - prissy and leonor discuss beatriz : I have less to say about this one, but the context is this scene was a bitch to shoot! It was originally in a different location, and I redid it in its entirety three times. This still isn’t right, but that was my mistake for going with a ton of white/cream. I do like this shot because of the depth, the colors, and the interaction between Leonor’s averted gaze and Prissy approaching with the sideways glance at her.
01.06 - arnaut returns to uspana : This is a beautiful daytime garden scene, but this final shot is my favorite. It’s established that Leonor is watching them from the moment they arrive, but we don’t see her face until the end, when little Abelina presents Arnaut with some flowers to cheer him up. What’s going through Leonor’s mind? She knows why he’s here. She knows how close he and her mother were. She knows he’s basically a foreigner at this point. She knows he’s a good father. Either way, it’s telling that hers is, to me, an unhappy, even negative expression.
01.07 - the family gathers for dinner : This scene is another than I redid because it wasn’t good enough. It still isn’t, but don’t tell past N. that! Anyway, the foreground-background interplay is what I like about this one. Visually, it’s interesting, but Arnaut having a breakdown while Mateo and Leonor convey, mostly, exhaustion … I dunno. I just like it. That and the blurry glasses and plates to remind us this table is set for a formal dinner no one felt like having. They’re more like anxious lingerers in a waiting room than dinner guests or reuniting family members.
01.08 - matias and sal have a moment : In retrospect, this is such a special scene. No one had all of the backstory on how Beatriz’s family came to be—how she ends up with these two men comforting each other outside her bedchamber, as it were. So, I wrote this hoping their dynamic would fill that void and show the product of decades of learning to live together. It’s also a rare opportunity (outside of the main story) that people who are a little bit more on Beatriz’s level talk frankly about her as a person, not as an iron lady or distant matriarch. Anyway, there are more visually interesting shots in this scene, but this one … It just arrests me, somehow. The look on Mathias’s face says it all. An exhale, finally.
01.09.1 - the day of the funeral arrives : I had to go back and pick this out because I forgot I’d split this scene into two posts! Freebie. I can’t say what I like so much. It’s an unusual angle, relatively speaking, and it has intersecting angles from the squareness of the bed, the carpet, their bodies. Something about Leonor’s expression visible in profile like that, and then the empty space of the bed … It focuses you somehow. The dialogue is melancholy and reflective, and the composition suits that to me. Of course, most likely, I stumbled across this angle because flipping face shots back and forth gets boring in a conversation scene!
01.09.2 - leonor makes a decision : I don’t even have anything clever to say about this one. I just love the bursts of yellow in this scene, and the fact that there’s a lemon tree to complement Leonor’s paint made it fun to shoot. This is another scene that underwent a redo, and part of that was moving this part of the conversation outside. I think it looks better that way. Certainly, the lighting was better! Maybe there’s some symbolism, too, with the fresh air and such. Maybe not. Reader’s choice, the postmodern way.

trans women, i love you.
you were a woman yesterday. you're a woman today. you're a woman tomorrow. you're a woman forever.
trans women have existed long before those stuffy bigots sitting in a court room have. trans women will continue to exist long after they're dead and rotting in the earth.
