I Was Asked By A Friend Yesterday If I Could Offer Basic Tips About Comic Paneling. As It Turns Out,

I was asked by a friend yesterday if I could offer basic tips about comic paneling. As it turns out, I have a lot to say on the matter! I tried breaking down the art of paneling using the principles of art and design, and I hope it helps you out!

EDIT: uh uh there are a lot of people reblogging this, so i figure i may as well append this now while i can lol

This whole thing was very much cranked out in a few hours so I had a visual to talk about with a friend! If this gives you a base understanding of paneling, that's awesome! Continue to pull in studies from the comics you see and what other artists do well and don't do well! You can tell paneling is doing well when the action is flowing around in its intended reading format.

Here's the link to the globalcomix article from which I pulled the images about panel staggering! Someone sent in a reblog that it wasn't totally clear that the 7th slide mostly covers what NOT to do in regards to staggering, and that is my mistake!

I saw in a tag that someone was surprised I used MamaYuyu too, and I don't blame them lol. If I had given myself more than a couple hours maybe I would have added something else on, I just really admire MamaYuyu's paneling personally.

uh uh, final append: I am by no means a renowned master of paneling, so if you find anything off base here, by all means, counter it with your own knowledge and ways you can build upon from here! Art is always a sum knowledge of everything we find. 💪

Rebloging bcs this is so damn genious

Hey there! Random question but I'm curious, how would you go about drawing chainmail? I have a D&D character that has chainmail under their armour and every time I try to draw them I'll start off by drawing all the links by hand then it gets way too tedious so I go look for chainmail pattern on google and paste it lmao but it feels like I'm cheating by doing that, and it clashes with the style I'm going for. I was wondering if you had any tips or tricks?

I don’t feel particularly great at drawing chain-mail either but there’s a technique I learned from a tutorial a bunch of years ago that I think makes a pretty good texture. It’s fast and the end result is cartoon-y enough to match a less photo-realistic style. I can’t for my life find the tutorial so I’ll recreate it here (using Photoshop):

1. Fill your canvas with black or white. Filter -> Render -> Clouds

Hey There! Random Question But I'm Curious, How Would You Go About Drawing Chainmail? I Have A D&D Character

2. Filter -> Filter Gallery -> Glass (under the Distort category)Keep smoothness as low as possible, play with the other settings

Hey There! Random Question But I'm Curious, How Would You Go About Drawing Chainmail? I Have A D&D Character

3. Find a filter in Filter Gallery that you like and apply it. Combine them, if needed.

4. When applying texture to the drawing, use Edit->Transform->Warp to make it fit the shape you’re trying to convey

You can stack more filters on after the texture is placed or draw over it with a textured brush to make it look less uniform if that’s what you want. Add a shine to it with a big soft brush, colorize it, go crazy. I go with whatever looks best to me atm.

This is how I did Geralt’s armor too, though since I knew the final print will be smaller than 1.5″ I didn’t worry about details much.

Hope that helps!

Something I try to keep in mind when making art that looks vintage is keeping a limited color pallette. Digital art gives you a very wide, Crisp scope of colors, whereas traditional art-- especially older traditional art-- had a very limited and sometimes dulled use of color.

This is a modern riso ink swatch, but still you find a similar and limited selection of colors to mix with. (Mixing digitally as to emulate the layering of ink riso would be coloring on Multiply, and layering on top of eachother 👉)

Something I Try To Keep In Mind When Making Art That Looks Vintage Is Keeping A Limited Color Pallette.

If you find some old prints, take a closer look and see if you can tell what colors they used and which ones they layered... a lot of the time you'll find yellow as a base!

Something I Try To Keep In Mind When Making Art That Looks Vintage Is Keeping A Limited Color Pallette.

Misprints can really reveal what colors were used and where, I love misprints...

Something else I keep in the back of my mind is: how the human eye perceives color on paper vs. a screen. Ink and paint soaks into paper, it bleeds, stains, fades over time, smears, ect... the history of a piece can show in physical wear. What kind of history do you want to emulate? Misprinted? Stained? Kept as clean as possible, but unable to escape the bluing damages of the sun? It's one of my favorite things about making vintage art. Making it imperfect!

Something I Try To Keep In Mind When Making Art That Looks Vintage Is Keeping A Limited Color Pallette.

You can see the bleed, the wobble of the lines on the rug, the fading, the dirt... beautiful!!

Thinking in terms of traditional-method art while drawing digital can help open avenues to achieving that genuine, vintage look!

Text: How I draw fat people, by a fat person.
Text: BEFORE I SAY ANYTHING! Fat people have many shapes and sizes, all of these tips can exist in different variations and ratios of fat distribution. This is not a comprehensive guide of how to draw fat people, These are just things I like to keep in mind. Study references of real people and pay attention to how fat behaves. Also find more anatomy-based studies of fat! This is more of a cartoon slash illustration based study. I recommend Morpho: Fat and Folds.
Text: Fat distribution rough approximation. Cheeks, Chin, neck, chest, underarms, waist, hips, thighs, calves, crotch, butt, scapula, hips. Mostly bone, Mostly fat.
Text: Fat sags from bones / muscle.
Text: Back rolls: Shoulders, waist top, body bend, waist bottom, hips. Stomach fold ends at hip dip. Torso, Waist, Hip, Thigh.
Text: Fold at bottom of skull. Body rolls act kind of like thick fabric when twisted.
Text: Fat hangs from arms. Armpit fold connects to chest fold.
Text: Neck fold. Double chin. Neck starts closer to front of the chin. Armpit fold.
Text: Some people have ab folds. Tapers into middle. Some people have rib folds.
Text: Cheeks! Cheek bulges at top. Corner of mouth pushes cheek up. Skin stretches.

hey these are some tips for some of the little details in drawing fat folks that some people might not know!

everyone has fat on their bodies so its a worthwhile skill to have, but most art tutorials leave it out. heres some other good tips from artists!!

shading colour tips

hey yall its me the Art Mom™ to help you shade pretty

rule 1: DO NOT SHADE WITH BLACK. EVER. IT NEVER LOOKS GOOD.

red- shade with a slightly darker shade of purple

orange- slightly darker and more saturated shade of red

yellow- i think like..a peach could work but make it a really light peach

green- shade with darker and less saturated shade of blue or teal

blue- shade with purple

purple- a shade thats darker than the purple you’re using and maybe a little pink (MAYBE blue)

pink- darker shade of red

white- a really light lavender or blue..or i guess any really light colour??

black- okay listen dont use pure black to colour anything unless you want to leave it with flat colours because you cant really shade black lol

grey- a slightly darker shade of purple or blue (less saturated)

brown- slightly darker and less saturated shade of purple or red

aaaaand thats all i got lol. let me know if there is anything i should add to this list!!
