This- this is SO true

important!!!

transcript:

A person with a somewhat masculine voice says in a higher pitched tone, “Blue hair is weird!” They then change their voice to their regular tone, and say, “I’m gonna teach you this how I would teach a child. I don’t know your life story, but for the sake of making this an educational video, I’m gonna use stereotypes, so only take what resonates with you.

One child is born in a seemingly functional, to their awareness, loving family, while the other is getting quite the opposite. You can’t choose that you’re born with it, so you’re put out in this world and the majority of your peers are like you, and the majority of your teachers, parents and authority are like you, and the majority of the media out there is showing people like you. So all of the kids that are not depicted by this media feel erased and different immediately from the time they’re born, how they are born. You may feel too feminine as a boy, too masculine as a girl, like you’re in the wrong body, like you don’t think exactly neurotypically as everyone else, you’re too thin, you’re too thick, you’re too dark, you’re not dark enough. Kids like this immediately understand the struggle of not being accepted by the majority, and if it’s not the peers doing it, keep in mind they have the same authority and media only depicting the majority of one type of person.

So both the outcasts and the masses are gonna ask the same question of how do I fit into society, and the majority of the authority and media is gonna be saying things like “God is the answer,” “man marries woman,” “girls are this way, boys this way.” You have a set amount of rules that if you have no reason to question, you’re not gonna disagree with. But when this world has taught you it’s not for people like you, you’re gonna ask, “why is it that way?” which brings us to, “who is teaching us this?” Oh, people from this era or earlier, who’s making this stuff, people in this era or earlier, “Let me do my research on who taught them that stuff.”

A common flaw with human beings is that they accept societal norms that are only in place for a little bit over their lifetime because they never lived to see a reason to question it. When you are born in a world that’s seemingly against you, you have reason to research why these traditions are in place, and you say, “Wow, if I happened to be born in the 1900s, pink was for boys and blue was for girls, and cheerleading is for boys and heels are for men, and the bible was changed to be anti-gay”. It’s almost like what we are taught is unreliable and not inherently factual, and in the time this was being taught, no one in the masses was disagreeing.

Everyone’s born in a box, but we weren’t all born with default settings, so we learned that humans can express themselves however they want. The way you think that only natural hair colors is normal, or how you dress is the right way, or blue hair automatically makes you weird, or pronouns equals liberal, that is taught to you. If this existed in the 1900s, this would be awesome [he points at blue hair], and this would just be english language [he points at pronouns]. When you’re wildly accepted by the masses, I see why you wouldn’t want to step down, you’re at the top of the pyramid. But the reason that we dye our hair blue is that the only people that wildly accepted us are other people who weren’t afraid of being different.

Now listen, maybe you just like authentically being a part of the masses, maybe your true self likes this stuff, that’s fine. But you also have to acknowledge that you were taught to avoid anything that would get you bullied or a negative reaction by the masses. So therefore, who’s really the top of the pyramid? [He flips the pyramid drawing upside-down].”

End transcript.

My mom told me that when I was a baby I rarely ever smiled and she said that she told the doctor that she wanted to get me tested for autism and the doctor said don't worry he is just mentally developing differently than my siblings and I think about that a lot

As an autistic, same. All us neurodivergents should travel in packs to relieve this societal tension. Let people be weird and/or nontypical! We’re not hurting anyone by being different from the average. <3

half of my time spent in public spaces consists of me wondering if i’m acting normal enough

Tags

For REAL.

While high-functioning may appear more “normal” to neurotypical people, in my experience, it takes a lot of hard work to appear that way. Hence the term “masking.” You’re essentially wearing a mask to appear more neurotypical to the people around you, but there’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes to help keep the facade up, and it is super tiring for the people doing it. I may be able to keep a bubbly and open presence at a party, but I know for dang sure I’m going to lock myself in a quiet room when I return home so I can decompress and process.

Oh yes, this is a really helpful guide. It can also be helpful to non-autistics as well! Some symptoms of ASD can also cross over to other conditions like PTSD and ADHD. It’s important to recognize your limits and know when you need to step away!

Some things that tip me off when I’m getting overloaded are on this list, but disassociation and the freeze response can also be reactions of overload too. So can becoming mono-syllabic or non-verbal.

Another important thing: don’t belittle yourself for needing a break! Everyone needs one from time to time, even neurotypicals. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. If anything, knowing how to take time for yourself in stressful situations is a sign of good boundaries and good mental health! I wish more parents taught this stuff to their kids; so many meltdowns could have been avoided.

Clues to help you figure out if an autistic friend or loved one is in overload

Overload is basically the point where our Autistic brains can no longer handle input. It's not a meltdown or shutdown, but more of a mental checkout. Frequent overloads, however, can lead to meltdowns or shutdowns.

It's important not to assume that we will have overload only in loud or busy environments. Autistic brains often process information at a much slower pace than a NT brain, so even quiet environments can cause overload if something triggers it.

Note: not every autistic experience is the same and these are general guidelines only.

Common signs of overload:

Loss of facial expression or difficulties in making facial expressions. May start to exaggerate facial expressions, too, as they are struggling to mask.

Staring off into space, easily distracted, struggling to pay attention etc.

Increased stimming.

Difficulties in speaking such as stuttering, forgetting words, mixing up sounds, or difficulty speaking at all.

May try to cover their ears, eyes etc to sensory input.

Increased sensitivities and may include new or unique sensitivities.

Headaches or feeling physically sick such as sweating, stomach ache etc.

Fellow Autistics: what signs would you like for others to know?

Oh yeah, for sure. Especially with conditions like Autism.

It’s often hereditary—and chances are that if you have it, a family member has it too. High-functioning ASD can often slip under the radar, and a lot of people get diagnosed later in life because of that.

The funny thing about figuring out youre neurodivergent is looking through your family and starting to notice youre definitely not the only one

That casual moment of realizing you’re an otherkin and the kintypes have weird overlaps and/or conflicting feelings.

Enderman kin - supposed to hate water

Seafolk kin - I love water

Dragon kin - I want to be in the sky not water

It kills me-

This realization of my kintypes explains a lot:

Endfolk kin:

Hate eye contact, love purple and darkness, I’m tall and lanky already but feel like I need to be TALLER 👹

I like picking things up like an Endfolk too :}

Seafolk kin:

I specifically feel like a leviathan sea folk, I’m a 50 foot long, glowing scales, head fins, large clawed, lots of frills and fins, CHARCOAL SKINNED BEAST, yet a gentle giant!!!

With dragon kin, I kinda already knew (I have a dragon sona)

Green scales, 3 pairs of horns, dark green & purple webbing for my wings, larger than most dragons, tall and imposing yet also lean and long.

I want to fly, I want to swim, I want to blip through the fabric of reality and leave purple sparkles in my wake.

And all this is also paired with already being a magical and supernatural and mundane entity that’s SOMEHOW BECOME AN ELDRITCH DEITY AND I ACCIDENTALLY IMMORTALIZED MYSELF WITH SHEER SPITE WHEN I WAS 9

*Insert Sad Eldritch blob here*

Might I add:

-the “pretend you’re a sim without a choice” method

-the “get someone else with executive dysfunction and help each other do stuff” method

-the “pretend you’re piloting someone else to do their stuff” method

-the “Ask for someone to breathe down your neck” method

-the “pretend you’re a slave in medieval times” method

-the “make jokes out loud about absolutely everything as you do it” method (works best with sleep deprived delirium)

-the “sing a song about what you’re doing” method (especially if you sing it oompa loompa style)

-the “pretend you’re possessed by your comfort character bc they want you to actually care for yourself” method

-the “be loud and silly like ASDF while you do stuff” method (works best if you’re alone OR have other people being loud and silly with you)

I might reblog with more if I come up with other ideas

Shower thoughts & random ass things about me:

-By dental standards, I have been an adult since I was 11

-got to love having joint problems and borderline scoliosis that I can negate for the sake of hide & seek to hide in a CLOTHING DRYER!

-my friends find it terrifying that I can make my movements completely silent at a moments notice, even when wearing a backpack or something like that

-I’m 5’11” (still growing) but I look 5’6” bc I’m almost always hunched over, and it’s funny how when I stand up straight I’m suddenly so much taller

-my first and only ever special interest/autistic obsession has been Pokémon since I discovered it as a neglected 4 year old needing dopamine

-I’m very dexterous and sleight of hand, and I would steal things as a small child. The only thing that kept me from shoplifting all the time was feeling guilty and returning the items that no one even realized were missing.

-I act legitimately drunk when sleep deprived; slurred words, bad coordination, really giggly, slow reactions, etc

-I’m basically addicted to the color purple, I get a dopamine rush anytime I see a thing that’s purple. I literally say ‘OoOO Purple :D’ whenever I see it

-my trauma started at 4 years old (´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥`)

-The only straight thing about me is…I legitimately can’t think of anything, IVE TRIED FOR 5 MINUTES TO THINK OF SOMETHING STRAIGHT ABOUT ME-

-OMAHGAWD- THE ONLY STRAIGHT THING ABOUT ME IS THE LINES I DRAW IN ART PIECES THAT NEED TO BE STRAIGHT

-My vocal chords are so flexible that I can mimic people’s voices, which my friends find both very cool and very terrifying

That’s all for now, bye bye :3

I’m sorry that instead of getting much needed help for your serious mental health issues you got sucked into a trendy genderwoo cult that erases and demonises homosexuality, is deeply racist, misogynistic and unscientific, and is completely dependant on controlling others perception of you. You’ll never ever be able to stop people from perceiving you as the sex you are, they’re just scared to admit it. And you know what, that’s fine because sex is a neutral fact and it’s impossible to change. Go develop a personality and interests outside of your obsessive navel-gazing brainwashing cult. Good luck!

1: I have 2 therapists, so I do have mental help

2: being LGBTQ+ isn’t my entire personality, I just tend to talk about it often.

3: interests you say? How about me being obsessed with Pokemon for over a decade and having a huge collection of everything Pokemon related?

4: I’m technically not cisgender, because I don’t identify as completely female, but I’m still on the feminine side of things, so people calling me a woman is fine 🤷‍♀️

5: I don’t really care how people see me, as long as they don’t harass me or anything because of how they perceive me, I’m fine.

6: how is it racist or misogynistic? Idk where you got that from.

7: I don’t demonize homosexuality, I’m literally under the bi umbrella, so it’d be impossible. Also, I don’t care about demonizing, bc I’m pretty demonic myself ٩( ᐛ )و

Anyway, imma eat breakfast now 💅

You ever look at your genetics and go “how the ever living FUCK did this happen” because I am directly descended from the strongest Old Ireland clan and the second strongest Scottish clan… ON OPPOSITE SIDES??? I’m double Celtic royalty-

I’m so stupidly tall, and then I’m also pretty sure I’m developing gigantism… I’m 5’11” STILL GROWING AND THEN THERES GIGANTISM?? I don’t wanna be like 8 feet tall bro- a normal house is already a lot and a custom built house would cost my kidney-

The only reason I look like I’m not starving is that extra mass isn’t body fat, no no no, that’s pure MUSCLE-

Ya know how most little kids are chihuahuas, because they don’t have strength for their rage? WELL I WAS A DAMNED TASMANIAN DEVIL BECAUSE I SOMEHOW KNEW A BUNCH OF WEAK POINTS AND FIGHTING TACTICS WITHOUT LEARNING???? Was I James Bond in a past life or some shit???

My molars are sharp…molars as in THE HERBIVORE TEETH. I’ve tried looking it up and didn’t get an answer, I EVEN ASKED MY DENTIST AND THEY COULDNT COME UP WITH A SURE FIRE ANSWER EITHER??

I have that weird mutation that makes it so I can consume other peoples blood without worry. How do I know this? One time my bestie scraped her elbow and when I was looking at it my autism brain made me automatically lick it- I was like “did- did I just eat your blood-??” And she was like “yeah- I think so-“ and we both proceeded to burst out laughing.

My favorite part of my fucked genetics: MY JOINTS! I simultaneously have joint pain and am hyper flexible- (my jaw can also unhinge without damage but ignoring that-) so sometimes I bend 2 degrees and my spine dissipates, other times I can CONTORT TO FIT INTO A FUCKING CLOTHING DRYER???? my bestie knows that and the fact that it’s my favorite hide and seek spot and we always cackle at people’s faces when they FINALLY find me- 😭

Saw a thread on Twitter of "gifts to give a person with ADHD and autism" that was full of stereotypical and quite frankly patronizing items, so here's a list of I (autistic individual) want instead as a gift

Money

Fourteen billion dollars

Free coupon to kill somebody with my teeth

Suitcase full of money

Cool looking rock

Scratching post for me to sink my claws into

An albino elephant

The head of Jeff Bezos mounted on my wall

Uncooked rice

A cup full of blood

100k in cash
