(Warnings!: ANGST ANGST ANGST! Heartbreak, Livia being a b¡tch, Lucy Gray mentioned, Slightly Dark Coriolanus Snow!)
"A toast to Emily.. Always the bridesmaid, Never The Bride..."
~~~~
You didn't know why you were here at Coriolanus wedding.. a wedding to Livia Cardew of all people. You couldn't believe what he said to you that night you had found out about the engagement.
~~~~
"Y-your what..." Y/n said, looking at Coriolanus. Hurt and confusion filled your eyes.
"Look I know it's out of the blue." He said, reaching out to her. She moved away feeling her heart start to break. "But I'm doing this for a reason.. n/n-"
"Don't.. just don't.." Y/n said putting her hand up to stop him.
"I-I have to go.." She said getting up and grabbing her coat and purse. Coriolanus looked at her confused.
"What?" Coriolanus asked before grabbing her arm.
"Let go Corio..." "Why are leaving like this?"
Y/n wanted to slap him so hard. Before turning to look at him tears filling her eyes.
"You're getting married Coriolanus." He winced a bit at her using his full name. "And I'm not going to be your mistress or the other woman or whatever this between us has been about!"
"N/n you know Livia means nothing to me.." Coriolanus said. She gave a look.
"Then why marry her? Because of her money?" Y/n asked, Coriolanus looked away. "Oh my god. That's it isn't it? It's just another way for you to get more ... power.."
"T-that's why it'll never be me.." Y/n whispered as the realisation she'd been avoiding for so long hit her full on. Coriolanus looked at her, hearing her words.
"Y-" "No! g-get off me.." She spat pushing him off her and he tried to grab her again but wasn't fast enough as she made a dash to the door and left leaving him alone.
~~~
The realisation she had finally faced that night shook her to the core. She'd known. Of course she'd known. How could she not? He would never go for her he'd pick someone higher more powerful with money or someone lower... but beautiful and talented something she wasn't.. something she never will be.. like Lucy Gray Baird.
The girl he had mentored and helped during the 10th anual Hunger Games and followed her to District 12 after getting caught cheating in the games as a peacekeeper.
~~~
"W-what?" Y/n whispered in disbelief. Sitting up in her bed as Coriolanus had just climbed up to your bedroom from the fire escape.
"I cheated in the games their sending me to 12 as a Peacekeeper.." He spoke. She knew he was lying.
"You're following her aren't you." She whispered. He looked at you confused and a mixture of shock and guilt. "I.. Dean Highbottom told me that you were getting sent to 8.. he didn't tell me why.."
His jaw clenched as he tried to reach out to her but she pulled away and looking away as tears formed.
"H-how long?" She asked.. he looked at her with an unreadable expression."20 years.."
She nodded wiping away her tears and sniffing. "Maybe.. it's for the best.."
Coriolanus froze at her words. Wondering what the hell she meant by that. It made him feel angry hurt confused.. numb.. he could tell she was crying.
"I-I think you should go.. Coriolanus.."
He winced at her using his full name the girl that he'd known for years always by his side. Now feeling impossibly far away even when she's right here next to him.
Y/n swallowed thickly before speaking.
"Tell Lucy Gray I'm happy she's alright.."
With that he gave her one last look before leaving back out her window as she finally let out a choked sob as her heart broke.
~~~~~
When she saw him at her front door only months later she didn't know what to do or say but he pulled her into a kiss telling her he was stupid for picking a low life District girl over you.
You met up with him or well he'd turn up at your apartment to talk or in the simplest terms to fuck. He was your first love, first kiss, first time. Of course a greed selfish man like him would take all of your most important firsts. At this point you were jealous of Lucy Gray for getting away from him. Whether she ran up north like Coriolanus told her or if she was dead.
Now here you were standing alongside of guests in an offset purple dress at his wedding to Livia Cardew. Feeling his gaze almost all night with Tigris next to you giving you a sad almost pitiful look.
"I was really hoping that it would be you.." Tigris whispered to you in hushed voice. You gave her a small sad smile back. Before looking to the direction where a glass was being clinked as everyone turned the way to see the devil herself Livia Cardew clinking her glass with a spoon. Raising her glass with a sly smile.
"Hello I'm Livia Cardew- well now Snow." Livia started a speech earning a few laughs from the crowd and a slight scoff from Coriolanus.
"I'd like to make this toast in thanking you all for coming to my-our big day! It's means so much to Coriolanus and I that you are all here!" She earned a few appreciation points from the crowd.
"Oh, I almost forgot! A Toast to Y/n Always the second choice. Never the first!" Livia Cardew Toasted, her speech made some gasp and others laugh.
Y/n froze in her spot as the reality of the unknown truth in Livia's speech. And before she knew it tears start to perk up into her eyes.
Coriolanus looked at Livia in shock and anger. His eyes drifted to yours. You stood their hurt, shocked once reality set in you saw almost if not everyones eyes on you and the last thing you saw was Livia Cardew smirking at you. After, that you moved your way through the crowd tears slowly falling from your eyes as people laughed and made comments. After snapping at Livia and having her bridesmaids go after her Coriolanus got up to go after you and Tigris grabbed his arm.
"I think you've done enough Coriolanus.." Tigris said but Coriolanus didn't listen as he tried to get through the crowd.
The last thing you heard before you exited was the sound of a bright flash. Sure enough everything will be on the front page of the prophet and you were right.
~~~
The next morning, your face was on the front page of the prophet. Headline saying ‘Chaos at Future Presidents Snows wedding. Y/n Reinswood at the center of it? (Read page 294 for more details!)
Y/n rolled her eyes as she threw it in the her trash can before going back to lay down in her bed curled up into a ball. Thinking about last night.
She knew Livia wasn’t wrong. She was in fact right. Y/n Lyn Reinswood was and will forever be the second choice, Especially when it came to Coriolanus Snow. Remembering last night made it hurt more.
~~~
Y/n rushed to her apartment closing the door with a slight bang. Where she finally let all the tears and sobs escape her lips. Her heart shattered in a million pieces. Feelings of heart ache and embarrassment. She had decided then to move somewhere he wouldn’t find her or care to look.
After what felt like hours, her tears had dried and breathing had calmed she heard a frantic knock on her door. Y/n sighed getting up figuring and hoping it was just Tigris coming to check on her.
“N/n. Please.” She froze in her spot hearing Coriolanus voice on the other side of the door. “Please.. open the door..”
Y/n put a hand on her mouth going to the floor as she let out muffled sobs he kept almost but practically begging for her to open the door. Coriolanus was many things but he was never a begger.
He didn’t know how long he stayed out there for pleading for her to let him in. Y/n was the only thing he had left and because of power once again he had lost you. His own foolish antics. And Livia Cardew how could he be so dimwitted in that decision.. he wasn’t going to let her go not like the songbird from 12. No… not her..
Was it love? Or obsession? Or fear of losing her that made him feel this way. That he kept crawling back to her. He wasn’t sure but he wasn’t ready to let her go all he needed now was to get rid of Livia..
Since your last real conversation with Coriolanus, he had been acting different. He was colder, and you didn’t know if you were simply going crazy, or if he just going out of his way to ignore you.
But regardless, you were hurt. When you tried to speak to him, he would say he had somewhere to be. And maybe he did, but you just wished he’d spend time with you.
You missed him, really.
Lucy Gray frowned as she watched you from across the room. You and the Covey were all getting ready backstage at the Hob where you were set to perform shortly. Even if you were cousins, you and Lucy Gray were brought up as sisters and knew the other probably better than you knew yourselves.
She watched you as you were deep in thought, and she knew something was troubling you. She walked over, and with a click of her tongue she gained your attention.
With a raise of her eyebrows you already knew what she was thinking. “Lucy Gray, please. Not right now,”
She raised her hands up in surrender, sitting down next to you on the couch. “I was just gonna ask what was wrong,”
“I’m sorry,” You sighed, rubbing your temple. “I’m stressed out,”
“Talk to me,” She softly smiled, her hand coming up to comfortably rub your shoulder.
“Coriolanus has just been acting weird, and I don’t know why. I think.. I think when we were at the lake I said something that he didn’t like, or something.” You vented. “Just ever since we got back, he’s been off. Or maybe I’m just delusional.” You scoffed, rolling your eyes at yourself. “Christ, Gray, I’m loosin’ it.”
She giggled. “You got a bad case of the love blues, it sounds to me, Y/N.” She repeated the same thing your mothers used to say all the time when talking about past relationships.
A small smile blessed your features. “I think you may be on to somethin’.” You sighed, again. “I just wish he’d at least talk to me, y’know? Let me know whatever I’ve done, so I can fix it, or if he wants to break up just fuckin’ tell me. I hate when shit just lingers.”
“I know.” She shook her head. “Listen, if he doesn’t realize how damn good he’s got it, then he ain’t worth it. You know better. And I know you two got history and what not, but if he stressin’ you out so bad you can’t even enjoy a performance, I’d say ya need to talk to the boy.” She explained, shrugging. “Or leave his ass. You deserve better,”
You chuckled. “Only you, Lucy Gray, could manage to make me laugh while talking about my relationship problems.” You shook your head, playfully.
A smile came back to her face. “You know it, now, c’mon we got a show to play.” She stood up, holding her hand out for you to take.
She brought you over to the rest of the Covey, Issac immediately bringing you into a side hug.
“Aye, sis, you want me to kick that boy’s ass?” He asked, smiling goofy.
You laughed. “No, please.”
“Alright, alright.“ He shook his head. “Let’s go, folks!”
Once you all were out on stage, all of the struggles and worries wrestling around your mind faded, and a smile brightly displayed on your face as you sang along with your family. You didn’t even realize how fast it was going by because you were enjoying yourself.
Until you saw his smirk in that crowd.
You were scanning the crowd as normal, loving to see all of different people coming to together to enjoy music when you saw him. He was in the back of the room, alone, his arms crossed over his chest as he smirked at you.
His gaze almost made you feel uneasy, his sharp eyes boring into yours. Lucy Gray wrapped up one of her songs, turning on her heel and winking at you, her signal to let you know it was your turn on the mic.
You sighed before standing up, grabbing your guitar and walking up to the mic.
“Hey, twelve,” You smiled, looking at the crowd. “How y’all doin’ tonight, huh?” They all cheered in return, making your smile grow bigger. “That’s what I like to hear! Alright, here’s the song.”
Over and over, I keep goin’ over the world we knew.
You began, singing deeply and sharply into the mic, staring into Coriolanus’ eyes.
Once when you walked beside me,
That inconceivable, that unbelievable world we knew,
When we two were in love.
Your eyes burned into his as the rest of the world seemed to fade away, leaving only you and him as you sang to him. He knew it was about him, most of your songs were.
And every bright neon sign turned into stars,
And the sun and the moon seemed to be ours.
Each road that we took turned into gold,
But the dream was too much for you to hold.
Your voice boomed across the pub, the couples holding each other and the singles downing their shots in misery. You touched all their hearts with the song, somehow. His eyebrows furrowed as he truly listened to the lyrics, seeing how you wrote about your love and pain, and he wondered if it was still about him.
I mean, he hadn’t hurt you, right? He didn’t think him ignoring you for a week or two would push you this far.
Now, over and over I keep goin’ over the world we knew.
Days when you used to love me.
Issac and Cece took over for the music break, as you turned to blink away the tears that threatened to spill.
And every bright neon sign turned into stars,
And the sun and the moon seemed to be ours.
Each road that we took, it turned into the gold,
But the dream was too much for you to hold.
The tears only got closer to dropping from your eyes as you kept singing, just trying to get through the song. You tried focusing on the beautiful music the Covey produced behind you and put your all into your singing.
Now, over and over I keep goin’ over the world we knew.
Days when you used to love me,
Over and over I keep goin’ over that world we knew.
You finished with one last strum of your guitar, and the melodies of Lucy Gray and Maudie Ivory next to you. The crowd erupted in cheers and claps.
“Thank you!” You smiled as the rest of your family joined you, bowing. After saying your goodbyes, you stalked off stage as fast as you could, ignoring the concerned gaze from Coriolanus.
“Your singing was beautiful, I love that song.” Lucy Gray said as she walked beside you. “But I do want to give that boy a stern talkin’ to for makin’ you feel that way.”
You grabbed her wrist. “No, Lucy. Let me talk to him.” She looked at you with raised brows, the pair of you exchanging words with your eyes. Eventually she nodded, stepping forward and letting you walk.
You walked through the corridor that led back out to the dance floor, your eyes looking for that familiar face. But it seemed to be that he found you before you could find him, the man already walking towards you.
You crossed your arms, turning on your heel to walk deeper into the corridor so no one would be around. You knew he’d follow, so you leaned against the wall, popping the gum in your mouth.
“There you are,” He called as he turned the corner, seeing you standing there. He walked over to stand in front of you. “Y/N, that song—”
“Cut the shit,” You cut him off. “What’s been goin’ on with you, Coriolanus?”
His eyebrows furrowed at your forwardness. “What do you mean?”
“I mean you avoidin’ me. You been actin’ weird since the lake, Coryo.” You sighed, pushing yourself off the wall to get eye to eye with the man before you. “If this is about what I said about runnin’ away..”
He rubbed his temple, staying silent.
“Coriolanus, do you expect me to enjoy life here? Watchin’ people get hung every other day, scared for my own damn life? My families lives?” You threw your arms out, scoffing. “Why would I want to stay?”
“Because of me!” He cut off your rant with a whisper yell. “I wanted you to want to stay, with me. Or.. come with me to the Capitol.”
“You know how I feel about that.”
“I know. And I wish I could change that.” He stepped forward a bit. “Because I don’t want to be away from you, Y/N.”
Your eyes softened. “Coryo, I don’t want to be away from you either. Hell, I’ve been thinkin’ about you for weeks just because you didn’t talk to me,” You bitterly laughed at your own foolishness. “But, look, if this is gon’ cause a problem between us, then maybe we should just call it off here, ‘cause even if it’ll hurt like hell, if we don’t got trust in each other then we got dirt.” You shrugged, even though the words you spoke felt like a dagger to the heart.
“No.” He shook his head immediately, his hands reaching out to grip your hips, almost seeming to make sure you wouldn’t run. “I’m not letting you go, no. Definitely not over this.”
“Then what do you want from me?” You asked, your eyes flickering between his. “You iced me out for 2 weeks because of what I said, then when I give you a solution, you say no?”
“Because that solution is us not being together.” He said, firmly. “That is the last thing I want. This whole thing started because I’m afraid of being away from you, Y/N.” He finally admitted.
You sighed. “Why didn’t you tell me that? We could’ve worked this out together.”
His hands slid up your body to cradle your face. “I was afraid. I’m sorry, baby. I didn’t mean for this. I didn’t mean to hurt you,”
You looked down. “You scared me, you asshole. I thought you didn’t want to be with me anymore.”
He frowned, tapping softly on your cheek to get your attention back onto him. “I’m sorry I made you feel that way, I always want to be with you. We will figure this out, I promise you that. I.. I’m just not good with talking about things with people, y’know…”
A soft smile spread over your face. “Yeah, I know. Just.. talk to me next time, okay? I hate when we don’t talk.” You said, walking into his arms.
He sighed happily at the contact, nuzzling his face his your hair to inhale your scent. “I will, my love.” He sighed, pulling back and licking his lips. “That song, though, it was beautiful. What is it called?”
You continued to smile. “You didn’t figure it out? It’s called ‘The World We Knew’ and, before you even ask, yes, it’s about you.”
His smiled slowly faded. “I made you feel that way?”
You swallowed, your smile gone as well. “Coryo.. these past two weeks, I thought it was over between us. When I wrote that, I was trying to come to terms with it.”
“Well, now you know that we’ll forever be in that world we apparently knew.” He joked, making you giggle.
He leaned forward to place a loving kiss on your lips, causing you to moan against his lips. He pulled back at the noise, looking at you with a smirk. “I have just the idea to make it up to you,”
You laughed when you saw that glint in his eye, kissing him again. “Show me what you got, big boy.”
When you first laid eyes upon the white-haired boy, you didn’t think he’d become as important to you as he is now. He was assigned to be your mentor in the Hunger Games, and you were slightly relieved when you saw him standing at the train station, waiting for you.
Although you were both cautious of the other, coming from different, yet similar lands. But once you warmed up to him, you never wanted to part.
After the arena got bombed with you all in it, Coriolanus getting injured aand trapped, you stayed behind even if there was a clear opening for you to run— because you found yourself caring for him.
He had protected you so far, treating you with kindness and respect as he guided you through this hellish period in your life. So you had to do the same. Anyways, that was what told yourself when you risked everything to stay back and attempt to help him.
You brushed your hair behind your ears, ignoring the stinging pain in your side from being burnt as you started off into a sprint towards the boy who was crying out in pain, the pole he was trapped under catching fire.
“Coriolanus!” You called out as you neared him. “I’m here, I’m here.” You tried to soothe him as you tried to push the pole off of him.
He let out a sigh of relief at the sight of your face, and almost looked confused at your act to help him.
After a moment of struggle, you finally got the pole away from him, but it had got him badly. You immediately bent down to his level, your hands going to cradle his face softly, he leaned into it.
“Oh, are you alright?” You whispered, his shaky hands coming out to grip your wrists, rubbing softly in thanks. “I’m sorry I didn’t get here sooner, I—” You did your best to explain, but you were cut off by a sharp grip on your arm, dragging you away from him. The boy reached out for you as you were taken away, only making your heart sink further into your stomach.
“No!” You thrashed in their hold, but to no avail. You watched your mentor lose consciousness from the pain as you could do nothing to help him.
And even though you only met him a couple days prior, you realized in that very moment how much you truly did care for him.
That was one of your earliest memories of Coriolanus, the next time you saw him after that was the first time your lips touched. From that night on, you became much more to each other than you ever would’ve guessed.
You sighed, moving from your spot in your window as reality set in. You hadn’t seen the boy in question in over month. He had promised to protect you, and he kept it surely. He cheated to get you out the games, and it ended with him locked up, as you liked to believe. People around twelve said that the Capitol had him killed.
You wished he had left you to die if it meant he’d be free and you the one in the grave. You were in misery in your district, missing your lover deeply. But, alas, you had no choice. And with all the fighting you did in that arena, you refused to give up now.
Even if it meant living without the one you craved most.
You grabbed your bag, another hard breath leaving your lips as you walked out the comfort of your small home that was in the outskirts of District 12. You liked it better that way, being away from it all. When you were younger you used to live down by the Hob, which was located right next to the Hanging Tree.
After years of hearing the grueling sounds of somebody loosing their life, the jabberjays in the wind repeating their loved ones cries, sometimes even their last words, you simply couldn’t bare it anymore.
So you left, opting to live out by the forest and the lake, giving you pockets of peace where you could forget it all. Or, at least the things you tried to forget. Some things seemed to haunt you forever.
You quietly walked into town to go get some food from the Mellark Bakery, your head down and gaze low the whole way. You could feel eyes on you— you always did when you came out of your home. You hated their stares, their judgement, that was the one thing that seemed to haunt you the most.
You finally looked up, meeting eyes with your ex boyfriend who was stood with his friends, a sly smirk being worn on his face. You internally shrank, your steps picking up as you tried to get closer to your destination.
Anxiety flooded your bloodstream as you heard loud, hard footsteps pick up behind you, sounding as if they were only inching closer and closer. Your eyes screwed shut as you felt like you were back in the arena again, your flight or fight instincts kicking in.
You tried to calm yourself down, repeating the words ‘It’s all in your head’ like a mantra under your breath. You had recently been plagued with the worst paranoia and anxiety, and the only reason of why you could think of was because of the time you spent in that godforsaken arena. Most of the time you felt as if you being hunted, all of the horror you felt when you were in that arena never leaving your nervous system.
Most days you had to talk yourself out of a panic attack, little things setting you off and sending you into a 20 minute state of panic. It was normal to you by now, and that is what you thought was happening.
Until a harsh grip yanked you out of your head, dragging you into an alley and pinning you to a wall. A loud yelp left your lips as you hit the wall, taking you a moment to process what was happening.
When you looked up, the pit in your stomach only grew further as an overwhelming sense of dread came over you. Your ex-boyfriend, Jay, was standing over you with that same soulless smile that used to haunt your dreams.
“My, Y/N. It’s been a mighty long time since I done seen you around here.” He taunted, his hot breath hitting your face, causing your eyes to screw shut as the past memories of him doing this very same thing to you swirled around your brain. “Thought after you got a taste of the Capitol.. of that Coriolanus Snow,” he said with disgust on his tone. “That you thought you were too good f’me. For Twelve.” He spat, harshly.
It was funny how with a few words he could turn you right back into that naive girl he manipulated all those years ago. You cowered in fear, refusing to look him the eye.
“Jay, please..” You whispered, your head turned away from him in an attempt to get as far away as possible. “Just let me go, please. I won’t come back around here, I swear.” You begged, tears filling your closed eyes as you fought for your composure.
“Nah, girl.” He whispered back, getting so close to you that you could feel his breath on your cheek. “I’m gon’ do what I want with you, like old times.”
Your eyes shot open his words. “No, God, please, no.” The tears fell from your eyes as you continued to plea with him.
“Oh, c’mon, Y/N.” He coldly smiled. “You used to be fun,”You felt his grip on your forearms travel back down to your hips, squeezing. The act left a bad taste in your mouth, making you want to throw up. You sobbed as you prepared yourself for what was coming, wishing you had just stayed cooped up in your home.
Your wails from the alley only increased in volume as his touch began to move downward. “Shut the fuck up,” He hissed, his hand slapping over your mouth. You prayed to whatever God was above, wishing he would just kill you now.
And just as his hand ghosted over the waistband of your skirt, the man’s touch disappeared all together, being replaced with the sound of someone hitting the floor.
You opened your tear-stained eyes slowly to find your attacker on the ground, and in a flash of throwing punches you saw that white hair adorned by the boy you adored so much.
You stood there in shock as you watched Coriolanus, who now wore a Peacekeeper’s uniform with a shaved head, beat Jay into a pulp. Tears still left your eyes as you slid down the wall, your knees coming up to your chest as you began to process what almost just happened to you.
Anxiety took your breath from your lungs as the panic finally began to set in once you realized you were safe. Your vision started to go blurry with tears as the will to breathe got harder.
“Hey, hey.” Coriolanus appeared in your line of vision, his hands wiping the tears from your face. “I’m here, you’re alright, baby.” He sighed before sitting down next to you and bringing you into his arms. You dug your head into the crook of his neck, hugging him close.
“Did he hurt you?” He asked, his hand on the back of your head, rubbing softly. He tried his best to comfort you, and tried to calm the fiery rage he felt when he saw that man on top of you.
“N—No,” You shakily got out. “He.. he tried to—”
Coriolanus’ head fell to your shoulder, hugging you just as tight as a sigh of relief left his lips. He had been walking by when he first heard your pleas with that man, and he dropped everything and ran at the sound of your voice. When he saw that man on top of you, the muffled sobs leaving your lips, your eyes screwed shut— God, he saw red. He would be lying if he didn’t say he didn’t miss you in the time you were apart.
Your body shook with your sobs, the boy’s heart hurting of the sight of you this upset. “Shh, you’re safe. I’m here,” He repeated, leaving kisses on your face, neck, and shoulders whilst he whispered sweet nothings in your ear in an attempt to calm you.
Once you somewhat calmed down you pulled back slightly, just to make sure he was real.
“Oh, Coryo,” You cried, your forehead resting on his. “Thank you, thank you.”
He swallowed the lump in his throat as he took in your state. He had never seen you like this, so scared, so vulnerable. The sight of it only made him bring you back into his arms, holding you impossibly closer.
“I’ve got you, my love.” He hushed your cries, leaving another kiss on your head. “No one’s gonna hurt you if I’m with you, it’s okay now.” You wrapped your legs around his waist as he stood up, you still in his arms. He placed you down slightly, his hands angling your jaw up so you’d look at him. “C’mon, let’s go to your house. Get you away from this piece of shit,” he pointed to the bloodied face of Jay who was unconscious on the ground. You nodded, trying to pull yourself together, your eyes flickering back to Jay to make sure he was still knocked out.
Sensing your anxieties, he pulled you back into his arms for once last hug. “Shh,” He rubbed your back. “You’re alright. He won’t hurt you, I won’t let him.” He comforted, leaning down to kiss your tears away. His movements made you smile as you sucked in a breath before you lead him out the alley and to your home.
Once you arrived and walked through the doors, it felt as if a weight was lifted off your shoulders. You were finally home, and you had Coryo with you.
Your heart felt full as it sank in that you were finally reunited with him, with Coryo. You got him back. A smile was on your face, despite your previous cries as you turned back towards the man who shared a similar smile to yours as he looked around at your home, and launched yourself into his arms.
He chuckled slightly, hugging you back like a delicate flower in his palm. After a moment of holding each other, you pulled back again, your hands cupping his cheeks. “I thought you were dead, Coryo. I thought.. oh, I thought they took you from me.” You sighed, leaning forward to connect your lips with his for the first time in months. You poured all of the longing, all of the tears, and emotion into that kiss, trying to show all your love with just an action.
He smiled against your lips, his hands on your hips being comforting as he leaned forward, tilting his head to deepen it. When the pair of you pulled apart for air, the smiles stayed.
“You should know by now that I’ll always find you, Y/N.” He joked, tucking hair behind your ear.
“Good,” You left one last peck to his lips, before going grabbing his hand and leading him to your bed. After all of the crying you had done in the past hour, all you wanted to do was lay with him.
He instantly knew what you were trying to do, a love-sick smile on his face as he laid down next to you, pulling you into his chest. You giggle as you settled in, your hand tracing patterns into his undershirt.
“I missed you,” He whispered after a while of quiet, looking down at you.
Blush dusted your cheeks as you rolled on your stomach to give him your full attention, your chin on his chest. “I missed you, too. Probably more.”
He smiled at your words, his hand coming up to grip yours lovingly, rubbing his thumb across the back of your hand. “You’re beautiful,” He said after a beat of silence, admiring you in the candlelight.
You smiled at his words. “You’re prettier, Snow.” Your gaze flickered down to your laced fingers, noticing his cut and bruised knuckles.
“Oh, Coryo,” You sat up slightly, bringing his hand with you to get a closer look. “I’m sorry—”
“Don’t apologize. That wasn’t your fault. I’m alright, baby, doesn’t even hurt that bad.” He tried to talk you down, a soft smile still on his face.
“Thank you, I mean it.” You met his eye. “I don’t know what would’ve happened if you didn’t save me.” You swallowed the growing lump in your throat. “You always save me.”
It was his turn to blush now, as you bent down to kiss his injured knuckles softly. When you finished he grabbed your jaw softly, bringing your lips to his. He kissed you hard, just like he always did. It seemed like he tried to show how much he loved you with just one simple action, and trust, he accomplished that goal.
You hummed happily against his lips, letting him pull you down on top of him, your lips still connected. When you pulled back for air, he continued to cradle your face, peppering kisses along your jaw.
“You don’t have to thank me.” He whispered, his lips still leaving kisses. “I’ll always be here to protect you.”
You smiled, giggling as you snuggled closer to him. The pair of you had quieted down once again, sleep and comfort taking over your minds.
But you cracked your eyes open one last time, leaning up to leave kisses on his jaw. “I love you, Coryo.”
His eyes opened immediately as he stared down at you in shock, before a soft smile took over his face. “I love you, too.”
And just like that, all you had been longing for was under your fingertips, and you now thanked whatever God was looking down on you for bringing this man into your life.
masterlist
The bright blue sky had faded into orange and pink, you and the Covey all now scattered around the land. Maude and Lucy Gray sat on the dock, feet in the water as they sang random melodies they came up with, Issac sitting behind them drumming along with a beat.
That left you and Coryo, who were laid together on a blanket under a tree, in each other’s arms. You laid in his lap, his arms wrapped around you, a warm feeling in the both of you chest’s. You softly sang a song to him— one you had recently came up with.
In the time of the harvest, the leaves fallin’ down.
I held what my true love could reap from the ground.
But the bounty of a garden can all rot away,
Without love and protection and a hard will to stay.
I’ll never have a garden again.
Where I fall to my knees and work with the land.
Now I’m just prayin’ with two dirty hands.
I’ll never, no, never have a garden again.
You finished the song with a breath, your hands going to nervously fidget.
“Your singing is beautiful.” Coryo whispered. “Did you write that?”
“Yeah, I did.” You softly smiled. “It’s not done, but I came up with it the other night.” You looked up, hearing the mockingjay’s repeat the melody you had sang.
Coryo followed your gaze. “I’ve never seen those type of birds before.”
“Mockingjays, as we call ‘em, or as Lucy Gray does.” You explained, smiling at the thought of your beloved cousin.
“Well, I like it so far. Your songs are always beautiful.” He smiled, leaning down to kiss your nose.
You giggled, your hand going up to grab him to connect your lips. You exchanged a passionate kiss, the boy always kissing you like you were his air. He slowly broke apart, leaving small pecks on your lips before he pulled you closer.
“I wish it could be like this all the time,” You sighed.
“Me too, baby.” He brushed some hair out of your eyes, studying you for a moment. “It could be… if you came to the Capitol—”
“No, Coryo.” You cut him off with a wave of your hand. “I mean out here. In nature, away from it all. I don’t want to go back to the Capitol ever again. I don’t belong there.”
He deflated, shaking his head. “Y/N, you know I have to go back eventually..”
A breath of air left your lips, his words leaving you frowning. “I know,” your eyes casted downwards, away from his.
He bent down slightly, leaving a kiss on your lips. “I’m not gone yet, my songbird. I’m still here,”
His actions brought a small smile to your face, as your hands came up to grip his lovingly. “I.. I’m sorry I make things difficult. I’m torn, Coryo. I don’t want to be without you, but I refuse to live that life in the Capitol.”
“You don’t make things difficult, my love. I understand. You were brought up out here, it‘s your home.” He muttered, staring into your eyes with a loving gaze. “I will figure it out— We will. Don’t worry, baby.” He left another kiss on your lips, this one longer and washing all of your worries away. When you pulled back for air, the boy turned to dig in his bag, turning back to you with an orange shawl in his hand.
“What’s this?” You asked, sitting up and turning to him.
He swallowed the lump in his throat, passing it to you. “It was my mother’s, and I’d like for you to have it.”
“Oh, Coryo,” You smiled, clutching it. “Thank you, really.” You brought up to your nose, inhaling deeply. “Mm, still smells like roses.”
He smiled down at you with adoration.
“I’ll take good care of it, I promise. Thank you, sweetheart.” You said, your accent showing. “You must miss your family so much out here.”
“I do.” He answered. “I worry about them all the time.”
“…Would you really go back, though?” You met his eye again. “If you could,”
“I have to, it’s where I belong. Like how you belong out here.”
You nodded, breaking your eye contact. “Yeah, I get it. I’m sorry.” Your gaze turned back to the water in front of you.
“Hey..” He scooted closer to you.
You shook your head. “What if this was our life, Coriolanus?” You asked, and his attention was immediately on you with the use of his actual name. “Out here, waking up whenever. Catching our own food, living out by the lake— I mean, would you still feel the need for the Capitol even then?” You further went on, urging him to listen to you.
“Hey, lovebirds!” Lucy Gray called with a giggle, causing the pair of you to break apart. “C’mere! CeCe and Issac caught dinner!” She waved, as Issac held up some fish they had caught.
You sighed, shaking your head once again at Coryo before you stood up to join them, Coriolanus on your tail.
As the night went on, the previous worries were now in the back of your mind as you sang a song with Lucy Gray, a smile on your face.
However, as Coriolanus watched you, the same worries were front and present in his mind. In fact, he couldn’t think of anything else. He knew somehow, someway he had to convince you to come with him. He couldn’t leave you behind, not again.
He didn’t know if you’d still be here when he got back.
‘What if this was our life, Coriolanus? Would you still feel the need for the Capitol, even then?’ Your past words ringing in his ears as his smile dropped. If he didn’t lure you in soon, you’d fly away with the mockingjays into the wind, never to be his again.
He couldn’t have that.
