The walk to the training facility was quite peaceful. In the short time you'd known him, you'd noticed Midoriya was a talker. He was asking questions about your quirk, how you learned to use it given the circumstances of your childhood, millions of things.

Usually you'd feel inclined to tell someone to fuck all the way off upon being asked any of these questions. But the space between you and your new friend felt comfortable, which was something you couldn't say you'd experienced in a long time. If anything the tension in your life had been palpable the past few months, even if it was only between you and yourself.

When the two of you finally arrived at the training facility you were happy to find it empty with the exception of All Might. He was perched on the opposite side of the room, on what looked to be a spectators bench. He raised a hand high and waved both of you over.

"Young Midoriya, Young (y/n), lock the door behind you and come on over so I can explain today's exercise." He nodded in the direction of the door and Midoriya turned to lock it. You made for the side of the room All Might was sitting on with Midoriya a few steps behind.

While All Might explained what you'd be doing you took off your overcoat. You hadn't wanted it to be ridiculously obvious where you were going, especially not after blowing off your practical partner. So you'd opted to throw the biggest flannel known to man over your training suit.

The mock up of your current gear held up well enough for it to be a training suit, one comparable to the one you've used in combat. Though the gear itself was a little... ratty. It hadn't been updated in quite some time and would without a doubt benefit from some TLC. You made a mental note to visit the support department before All Might spoke.

"Alright, go ahead and show us what you can do kiddo." He nodded as he motioned for Midoriya to sit next to him.

You tilted your head in confusion.

"Huh? I thought we were supposed to-"

"Nope. If your enemy is to have a fair fight they need to understand the range of your abilities, and yours is quite wide. Regardless of strength, It would be both unfair and reckless to send Midoriya in blind, even in a sparring match."

"Fair point, but then what do you want me to do?"

"Simple, use your quirk in the best way you know how. Show off a little if that's what you want to do," All Might waved his hand flippantly, "I just want to see what you're capable of and where your limits are, so that you can surpass them. The last time I saw you use your quirk was years ago. I would imagine you've improved since then?" He quirked a brow. Midoriya sat beside him with a notebook in his lap, looking between the two of you.

"I have." You nodded curtly, beginning to understand what was being asked of you.

"Then the floor is yours Young (y/n)." All Might gestured to the expansive training room behind you. You turned towards the open space, calmly walked to the center of the room, and thought through your plan. If improvement was what was being asked of you, why not show just how many of your limits you've surpassed?

Overhead you counted six rows of ten high-powered lights, making for sixty total. With those, plus the air conditioning, plus the rest of the technology in here, you figured you should be set. Electrical energy seemed to be the safest route while still being impressive.

Taking a deep inhale you tightened your core, the very inside of your soul to be as hard as rock. "Siphon." You breathed out on the exhale, you made an effort to feel every molecule of electricity within your reach. The current expanse of your quirk was the training room. If necessary, you could triple your reach, but you didn't want to take power from any of the dorm buildings.

Push your energy out, grab more of it, pull, compress.

Push your energy out, grab more of it, pull, compress.

Push your energy out, grab more of it, pull, compress.

You could feel your insides burning, but not in a way that hurt. They burned in the way that let you know you were sucking up every volt of energy available to you. In such a way that you could feel the energy building on itself and multiplying.

You didn't notice the way the lights went out, or the way the AC stopped working, or the electrical lock on the door come undone. You only knew you'd taken all you could when the breaker popped, then exploded with a resounding clap.

The way that you looked during was unbeknownst to you. But if you had to guess by the, "Oh my, oh my, what?" that Midoriya breathed out with wide eyes, you'd say terrifying.

If the way that All Might was looking at you like a proud father was any indication, you'd say you did your job.

Smiling softly you looked down at your, now glowing, skin. Electricity danced across it softly until you allowed it to dissipate. Simply deactivating it and storing it as potential energy.

"When I told you to show me what you got, I didn't mean to cut the power out. Jeez kid, what have they been feeding you over there?" All Might joked with a smile, one you returned to him proudly.

Prologue: Texts With Katsuki but You're An Exchange Student.

NEXT

Tags: Exchange student!Reader x Katsuki, Uncle Might, Bestie Izuku, Traumatic childhood, University AU, characters are 20/21, war never happened for the sake of our happiness, reader is mentioned to be from America but you can ignore that, this is an intro for context (?) i guess, will be an smau.

Prologue: Texts With Katsuki But You're An Exchange Student.

Life hadn't ever been kind to you, per se. The past decade had been peaceful, and with the childhood that you endured peace was the best it would get. So you appreciated and reveled in it. Living in whichever state your heart pleased and going to University with government funds, all thanks to the hero whom changed the trajectory of your life.

You should've known better than to get comfortable with this feeling, though. It was and always would be short lived. Registering for classes was the only thing on your mind at the moment. You were scrolling through different Practicum of Battle Tactics professors when your phone lit up with a call notification. A bright smile and blonde hair took up the entirety of the screen, courtesy of All Might. You picked up the phone and answered the call, brows furrowed all the while.

"Hey Uncle Toshi, long time no talk, everything alright?"

"Actually Young (y/n), we need to have a conversation, are you sitting down?"

Ah, there goes the aforementioned peace, right out the window. Cue heart attack starting now. If All Might tells you to sit down, chances are things aren't great.

"Yeah, what's up? You have me worried."

"I would tell you to calm yourself, but you reserve every right to worry in this situation. I regret to inform you that your parents are being released from jail in a month."

"I'm sorry, what?"

Fuck a heart attack, your heart stopped.

"I know, this is a lot to take in. I was told that this is the most notice they could get me as far as a release date went. I attempted to get it pushed back, or even reopen the case to see if they could get more time based on evidence found since their arrest." You heard him sigh a heavy, defeated breath through the speaker. "However there was nothing to be done on that front. I do have another option to present if you're interested." He paused, as if waiting for permission to continue before explaining.

"I'm listening." You breathed softly, anxiously.

Over the phone you heard him clearing his throat, followed by the sound of papers rustling. A sound of satisfaction was made as though All Might found whatever he was looking for. Having known the man like family since you were a child you understood first hand how messy his paperwork could get. You could only imagine the state of his desk at the moment, where you knew he was sitting due to the time difference. Part of you felt bad for interrupting his teaching schedule even though he had called you.

"Okay so," He paused as though he was reading something, "We can have you in Japan in three days. I can have the visa and your enrollment at UA University expedited."

You held your breath for a moment. You debated if you really wanted to go overseas for a year, or longer, depending on how your case played out. But the alternative was your family finding you and dragging you back to that godforsaken cult.

They had somehow survived albeit not as strong as they once were. The loss of their leaders, your parents, put a large dent in their "community" but didn't cause them to disperse. You couldn't imagine going back there.

"Alright, I'll start packing." Was the decision you made after a minute of silence. "One thing though,"

"And that is?"

"No one but faculty knows about this. I understand the importance of them knowing, should something happen. But I'm a charity case here. Everyone has read the news story about my family and then sees my quirk and eventually puts two and two together. I want a fresh start." You rambled, ending with an exasperated sigh.

"I can assure you, a fresh start is the least I can do for you. You deserve it." All Might replied sincerely and curtly, still audibly filling out and filing paperwork. You presumed it was for your transfer. "Though it will affect your quirk training, you understand this right? You can't use your quirk at it's highest output and expect people not to figure out who you are. The story was national news Young (y/n)." He sighed heavily.

"Well, yes, but couldn't you and your protégé help me train? He kept your secret for years, don't see why he can't keep mine."

"You raise a fair point. Speaking of Young Midoriya, I have a conference to attend on the day you fly in. He'll be picking you up from the airport. I've sent your flight information over already."

"Thank you Uncle Toshi, I appreciate you more than words can say."

"Don't mention it, kid. Like I said, it's the least I can do. I'll see you soon, have a safe flight!"

"Thank you! Oh-! How do I know who to look for? I have no idea what Midoriya looks like."

"Green. Look for lots of green." He said without any added context before ending the call. The line dropped and you shook your head confused, but got to packing.

~

A few days later when you landed, you understood, and you wondered to yourself how a person could be so green. Little did you know, this little green gremlin was about to be your new sidekick.

Prologue: Texts With Katsuki But You're An Exchange Student.

an: i'm so excited to actually churn out the texts for this SMAU but readers background/reason for being at UA is a big part of the story. i felt like it deserved its own little background. this isn't crucial to the story but will def help provide context later down the line.

𖤐 synopsis: with the feeling of being disregarded from izuku, you try to end the relationship; but, izuku unexpectedly reels you back in with a surprisingly, odd way of an apology.

𖤐 trigger warnings: angst/fluff at the end

𖤐 pairing: izuku midoriya x gender neutral! reader

𝐀 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐎’𝐒 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐄

the afternoon sun cast long shadows across u.a. high school's campus as you made your way toward heights alliance, the dormitory where class 1-a resided. your footsteps were heavy, matching the weight in your chest.

today marked exactly two months since you and izuku midoriya had started dating, but instead of celebrating, you were dreading the conversation you needed to have.

the world outside the school walls had grown increasingly dangerous. villains were organizing, heroes were falling, and somehow in the middle of it all was your boyfriend—a sixteen-year-old with the weight of an impossible legacy on his shoulders and determination burning in his eyes that sometimes scared you.

you found him in the common room, notebook open on his lap, muttering analysis to himself as he reviewed footage of recent hero battles. his green hair was messier than usual, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. he hadn't noticed you yet.

"izuku," you called softly.

his head snapped up, and immediately his tired face transformed with a smile that made your heart ache. "hey! i didn't hear you come in." he closed his notebook and patted the spot beside him on the couch. "i was just studying some new techniques that could help with controlling—"

"can we talk?" you interrupted, remaining standing. "somewhere private?"

his smile faltered, concern immediately replacing his enthusiasm. "sure. my room?"

the walk up to the fourth floor was quiet, tension building with each step. izuku's room was exactly as it always was—all might memorabilia covering nearly every surface, analysis notebooks stacked on his desk, workout equipment in the corner. it should have felt comfortable by now, but today it just reminded you of how single-minded his focus could be.

"is everything okay?" he asked as he closed the door behind you.

you took a deep breath. "not really. i'm worried about you, izuku."

he blinked, confusion written across his freckled face. "worried? about me? why?"

"why?" you couldn't help the slight edge that crept into your voice. "have you looked in a mirror lately? you're exhausted. you're pushing yourself way too hard with this new blackwhip training. aizawa-sensei said you were in recovery girl's office twice this week."

izuku's shoulders tensed slightly. "that's normal for training. i have to master these quirks if i'm going to—"

"if you're going to what? save everyone? become the number one hero? die trying?" the words came out harsher than you intended, but weeks of bottled concern were finally spilling over.

his eyes widened. "that's not fair. you know how important this is."

"of course i know," you said, trying to keep your voice level. "the whole world knows how important it is. but i'm not dating the future symbol of peace or one for all or whatever. i'm dating you, izuku. the boy who might not live to graduation at this rate."

a flash of hurt crossed his face. "i'm being careful."

"no, you're not!" you gestured to the bandages peeking out from beneath his school uniform sleeve. "this isn't normal, izuku. most teenagers worry about exams and crushes, not villains targeting them specifically."

"i never said it would be normal," he countered, his voice quiet but firm. "when you said you wanted to be with me, i thought you understood what that meant."

the implication stung. "so i'm just supposed to watch you destroy yourself? smile and nod while you come back with new scars every week?"

"i'm getting stronger!" his voice rose slightly, a rare show of frustration. "every training session, every new technique—it's all to make sure i can protect everyone. to make sure i can protect you."

"i never asked you to protect me," you said. "i asked you to be with me. there's a difference."

the argument built like a gathering storm, months of unspoken fears and frustrations finally finding voice. the common room incident with bakugo where izuku had jumped in front of you unnecessarily. the hospital visit after his internship that he'd downplayed. the nightmares he wouldn't talk about that left him shaking and distant.

"you don't understand what's coming," izuku said, running a hand through his hair. "the league is getting stronger. all for one is—"

"stop." you held up your hand. "i'm not asking for hero intel, izuku. i'm asking for my boyfriend to care about his own safety as much as he cares about everyone else's." "i do care!"

"then why won't you ever slow down? why won't you let anyone help you? even all might is worried, i can see it when he watches you train."

his face flushed with emotion. "because there isn't time! because if i fail, people die! because all might chose me, and i can't let him down!"

the words hung in the air between you, heavy and revealing. this wasn't just about heroics or training—this was about a boy desperate to prove himself worthy of an impossible mantle.

you sighed, suddenly feeling very tired. "i can't compete with that, can i? with all might, with one for all, with your destiny or whatever you want to call it." "it's not a competition," he said softly. "it feels like one. and i'm losing." you reached for your bag. "maybe we rushed into this. maybe dating the successor to all might isn't something i'm cut out for."

panic flashed across izuku's face. "wait, what are you saying?" "i'm saying i need space to think, izuku. this isn't what i thought it would be." you turned toward the door, willing yourself not to cry. "i care about you too much to watch you self-destruct."

"please don't go," he whispered, voice cracking slightly. "not like this." but you were already reaching for the doorknob, determined to leave before the tears threatening to spill could fall. you needed time to sort through your feelings, to decide if loving a boy with the weight of the world on his shoulders was something you could actually handle.

"i'm sorry," you said quietly. what happened next occurred so quickly you barely had time to register it. there was a crackling sound, a flash of dark energy in your peripheral vision, and suddenly you felt something wrap firmly around your waist—not painfully, but with unmistakable strength. blackwhip.

the dark tendrils of izuku's newer quirk had extended from his hand, gently but firmly holding you in place. before you could protest, he had pulled you back toward him, spinning you around to face him. his eyes were wide with surprise at his own actions, a look that suggested he'd acted purely on instinct.

and then, in a move that shocked you both, he leaned forward and pressed his lips firmly against your cheek—a desperate, impulsive gesture that silenced whatever words had been forming on your lips.

for a moment, neither of you moved. the blackwhip dissipated, but izuku didn't step away, his face inches from yours, cheeks burning crimson.

"i—i'm sorry," he stammered, mortification dawning as he realized what he'd done. "i didn't mean to use my quirk on you. that was completely inappropriate and—"

"izuku," you interrupted his spiraling apology. "you used blackwhip on me." he winced. "i know. i'm really sorry. i panicked and—"

"no," you said, something warm unfurling in your chest despite everything. "you controlled it perfectly. no damage. no pain."

his rambling stopped as he processed your words. "oh. yeah, i guess i did." a small, tentative smile crossed your face. "that's the first time you've used it without hurting yourself or breaking something. and you did it…for me." the realization seemed to dawn on him too, his eyes widening slightly. "i wasn't even thinking about control. i just didn't want you to leave."

you reached up, touching your cheek where his kiss still lingered. "and the, um…?"

his blush deepened impossibly. "that was impulse. total impulse. i'm sorry if it was unwelcome or—"

"it wasn't unwelcome," you said softly. the tension between you shifted, the anger from moments before not gone but transformed into something different, something more vulnerable. "i'm scared, izuku," you admitted, finally voicing the fear that had been driving your anger. "not of villains or fighting or any of that. i'm scared of losing you."

his expression softened, understanding replacing defensiveness. "i'm scared too," he confessed. "all the time. but that's why i have to keep pushing, keep getting stronger."

"but at what cost?" you reached for his hand, turning it over to reveal the scars that mapped his sacrifices. "these aren't just training injuries. these are pieces of yourself you're giving away." izuku looked down at his scarred hand in yours. "i know it seems that way. but every scar is a lesson learned. a mistake i won't make again."

"and what about us? am i just another lesson waiting to happen?"

he shook his head firmly. "no. never." he took a deep breath. "look, i can't promise i'll stop training hard. i can't promise i won't put myself in danger when lives are at stake. but i can promise that you're not competing with anything or anyone. you're…" he searched for words, "you're the reason i come back, not just the reason i fight." "that sounds nice, but what does it actually mean?"

"it means i'll try harder to find balance. to take breaks. to let you in when things get overwhelming instead of shouldering everything alone." he squeezed your hand gently. "and maybe…maybe you could help me remember that saving the world includes saving enough of myself for the things that matter after the fighting's done."

you studied his face—earnest, determined, those green eyes that had always seen more in you than you sometimes saw in yourself. "that's a lot of maybes."

"i know. but i'm willing to try if you are." he hesitated, then added quietly, "i don't want our first argument to be our last conversation."

despite everything, you felt a smile tugging at your lips. "you know, most couples' first fights are about something normal. like where to eat dinner or forgetting an anniversary."

he laughed softly, the sound a welcome break in the tension. "when have either of us ever been normal?"

"fair point." you sighed, some of the anger and frustration finally draining away. "for the record, using your quirk to stop someone from walking away is definitely crossing a line." he winced. "i know. it won't happen again."

"good." you stepped closer, poking his chest lightly. "because next time i might actually be mad enough that you'd end up in recovery girl's office for an entirely different reason."

his eyes widened slightly before he caught the teasing in your tone, a smile spreading across his face. "so…there will be a next time? for us, i mean?"

instead of answering immediately, you reached up and placed a gentle kiss on his cheek, mirroring his impulsive gesture from before. "yes, you heroic idiot. but we have a lot to figure out." relief washed over his features. "we will. i promise." he hesitated, then added, "um, can i…i mean, would it be okay if i…"

you rolled your eyes, but couldn't suppress your smile. "yes, deku, you can kiss me properly now."

his face lit up with the same determined joy you'd seen when he mastered a new technique, and as he leaned in, his lips finding yours in a gentle, tentative kiss, you understood something important: loving izuku midoriya would never be easy. there would always be dangers and fears and arguments about his reckless heroism.

but maybe, just maybe, it would be worth it.

outside the window, clouds shifted, allowing late afternoon sunlight to stream into the room, illuminating the space between two teenagers figuring out how to balance first love against the weight of a world that demanded heroes.

"for what it's worth," izuku whispered as he pulled back from the kiss, his forehead resting against yours, "controlling blackwhip was a lot easier when i was thinking about holding onto you instead of fighting."

you smiled, storing that confession away like a precious secret. "then maybe we've both learned something important today."

as the sun continued its descent outside, casting long shadows across u.a.'s campus, you and izuku sat on the edge of his bed, hands intertwined, talking about boundaries and fears and hopes—the kind of conversation that transforms a crush into something deeper, something worth fighting for.

your first argument hadn't ended your relationship. instead, it had given it roots, something solid to grow from. and in a world increasingly filled with uncertainty and danger, that was its own kind of heroism.

MEETING IZUKU MIDORIYA:

the first time izuku meets you, he's so nervous he can barely speak, stuttering and fidgeting as he tries to introduce himself.

you catch his eye during training, and he notices how effortlessly you handle your quirk, making him instantly admire your skills.

his heart races when you ask for help with a training exercise, and he takes the opportunity to geek out about hero tactics and strategies, revealing his passionate side.

izuku can't help but doodle about you in his notebook, sketching little scenes of you both saving the day together.

he gets flustered whenever you compliment him or praise his progress, cheeks turning a deep shade of red as he tries to downplay his achievements.

whenever you’re around, he subconsciously activates his quirk a little harder, wanting to impress you with his newfound strength.

You end up as partners in a training simulation, and he panics, but ends up being surprisingly effective under pressure, showcasing how well he can think on his feet with you by his side.

IZUKU CRUSHING ON YOU:

as time goes on, izuku finds himself crushing hard on you, feeling the excitement but also the pressure of his feelings, especially since you're both training to be heroes.

he starts to notice the little things—how you laugh, your determination in battles, and how you encourage your classmates during difficult times, making his heart flutter.

rhe more time he spends with you, the more he admires your bravery and dedication, leading to moments where he can't help but cheer for you during your training sessions.

he tries to find excuses to spend time with you outside of training, suggesting study sessions or helping you with your quirk, while secretly hoping you'll see him as more than just a friend.

one day, he accidentally slips up and admits how inspiring he finds you, leading to a series of blushing and stammering as he realizes what he’s just said.

after saving you from a dangerous situation during a training exercise, he realizes just how much he cares about you, leaving him flustered and unsure how to express his feelings.

he begins to draw little comics about you two, showcasing both of your heroic adventures, using them as a way to cope with his growing crush.

DATING IZUKU MIDORIYA

once you both confess your feelings, izuku becomes the sweetest boyfriend, constantly checking in on you, making sure you’re okay after training, and encouraging you to reach your goals.

he always wants to share his notes with you, discussing new strategies for hero work, making it feel like you’re a team both in and out of the classroom.

dates often involve casual outings where he awkwardly tries to impress you—whether it's at a café or a hero training facility—but he ends up just being himself, which you adore.

he still gets flustered whenever you compliment him, but he starts to learn to accept your praise, making him feel more confident as your partner.

during fights, he’s always on high alert when you’re around, ready to use his quirk to protect you, often shouting, “don’t worry, I’ll save you!” even if you’re perfectly capable of defending yourself.

he loves planning surprise training sessions just for the two of you, using it as a way to bond and grow together while also being productive heroes.

late-night study sessions turn into moments of shared laughter and deep conversations, where he feels comfortable enough to share his dreams of being a hero by your side.

izuku surprises you with thoughtful gifts, like customized gear for your quirk or hero-related memorabilia, showing how much he pays attention to your interests.

Still looking!

Helloo! I’m Keith and I’m currently looking for a new rp partner! I have been Roleplaying for years and have done a wide arrange of plots and genre. I will make clear now that I specialize in horror, I like the grotesque and morbid. Mind break is something I main, and I apologize if that’s not something you’re into. This does not mean I’m unwilling to do anything else, just know that I prefer at least a little bit of angst!

I’m open to anyone and anything, but here are some of my rules:

- MUST be 18 or older

- At least 2 sentences a reply (normal sentences, not 3 word sentences)

- In third person

- Relay triggers BEFORE the rp has started

I play with all different kinds of characters. As long as you give me enough to work with, I can create epic and intricate plots. I also adore headcanons, so if you have any go ahead and throw them in!

For the fandoms I’m in, I’ll write the characters that I would like to main next to it along with my main ships for them (and any warning notes). This doesn’t mean I won’t play any other characters or ships, I most certainly will be! These are just the characters I connect with most and love, and the ships I personally adore.

HermitCraft/Life Series- Grian: Scarian or Mumscarian- I have a lot of headcannons for this one so we’ll have to discuss a bit before hand. This one can get intense, too, but it won’t if you’re not into that.

Voltron: Legendary Defenders- Keith: Klance or Shklance

My Hero Academia- Deku: Bakudeku or Todobakudeku- Can get really angsty

DreamSMP- Tubbo or Dream: Any ship you like- I have headcannons for this one also. It also gets intense, grotesque even, but won’t if you’re not into that.

QuackitySMP- Tubbo or Slimecicle: any ship you want

Bungo Stray Dogs-Akutagawa or Dazai: Dazaku, Dazakuatsu or Soukoku- Will most likely be dark and grotesque, hard not to with the series itself so apologies

Any of these fandoms can be any AU, we’ll discuss specifics before we start. I would prefer to use Discord, but can use almost any app I have so whatever works best for you. My DM’s are open!

The “Popularity” of Midoriya Izuku

Following the post that explains the connection of the hero name Deku to the ‘deku-no-bou’ line in the poem Ame ni mo Makezu (of which is famous in Japan, hence most Japanese readers likely getting the reference from the get-go while the out-group hasn’t) and details as to how Izuku choosing ‘Deku’ as his hero name shows that he never sought praise nor credit for his heroic acts, is a series of heartwarming reactions where people echo the inspiring yet bittersweet sentiment of the poem.

Some express that the realisation had made them cry. Others feel rather satisfied, saying how it adds yet another layer to the hero name. And lastly, most importantly, quite a lot noted how it fits Izuku’s character, if rather lonely and tragic for him, because—already—speculations arise that him being ‘The Greatest Hero’ by the end of the story will only be known to the readers...but not in-universe.

So let me offer some reprieve.

But first, let us establish first how outsiders perceive Izuku, and what exactly he is recognized for at this current time. (Because he is talked about a lot, even more so than we realise.)

After all, our storyteller, Midoriya Izuku, is such an Unreliable, Non-attention-seeking Narrator, which is why the narrative is framed in such a way that doesn’t put Izuku in the spotlight... nor does our MC’s point-of-view linger upon the positive impact of his own actions.

However, it doesn’t mean that he isn’t seen at all. In fact, history certainly has both eyes on him.

Without further ado, let’s talk about the popularity of—no, not Deku...

The “Popularity” of Midoriya Izuku.

image

Izuku is most commonly known as the ‘kid who broke his bones and kept on fighting during the Sports Festival,’ while his more incredible feats like single-handedly taking down A-Rank Villain Muscular (twice!), defeating Shie Hassaikai Leader Overhaul, and saving the U.A. Cultural Festival (by stopping Gentle Criminal) were not—and might never be—common knowledge.

image
image

Truth be told, whether they’d realized it or not, people started looking at Izuku before the Entrance Exams. That was when Izuku ran to face the Slime Villain, while the other pro heroes were just standing around waiting for the arrival of a ‘better match-up’ against the enemy. Not sure how canonical the light novels are, but in one of them, Kirishima internally mentioned a certain ‘middle school student’ who went against the Slime Villain w/o use of his quirk, which sparked discussions on the internet. Certainly, cameras could be rolling during the villain fight, so copies of Midoriya’s act might have gone around.

If in manga canon, people already began watching him when he smashed the Zero Pointer into pieces. That’s certainly a very memorable feat. They called him ‘special.’ Furthermore, later on, we see that Izuku was immediately popular amongst his classmates. Everyone wanted to talk to him. They praised his moves (with an emphasis at times on how he was doing great even w/o use of his quirk—in fact, his quirkless moves and dodging garnered more praise than his final Smash move) and were inspired by him after the Battle Training round. Izuku was rather overwhelmed. For the first time in his life, his classmates weren’t ganging up on him to tease him nor make fun of his dreams!

image

Despite his crazy performance in the Sports Festival and not having a single pro hero interested in sending him an internship offer, Izuku was still popular amongst the civilians. They complement his hard work, they encourage him... When he patrolled the streets with Mirio in the Shie Hassaikai arc, he was recognized by two ladies and they smiled at him as they passed by.

image
image

If you also notice, outsiders acknowledge his incredible progress even more so than Izuku’s internal narration. They put him in a whole other league, as if there was no question at all whom really is the strongest one. They talk about his training, how he’s developed new attacks... Midoriya Izuku seems to be a popular topic around U.A., to the point that gossip about him circulates fast, with the details known by almost everyone the very next day. Furthermore, he mainly gets talked about in a positive light despite his supposed ‘delinquent’ actions. Most U.A. students respect Midoriya Izuku.

image
image

And they know him by name and will call out his name! (As the random guy from the concert crowd demonstrates, whereas he’d only referred to Aoyama as ‘Laser Boy.’) Pro heroes like Gang Orca also knows that bone-breaking kid as “Midoriya” (Gang Orca also internally mentions his name in the anime!!!). I don’t know why I’m excited over Gang Orca calling out Izuku’s name, but...yeah, I am. I’m just a fan of pro heroes knowing and seeing Izuku and referring to him as Midoriya-kun. :’)

image

And of course, Midoriya is also very much known to some villains, and in a positive way as well. Gentle Criminal and La Brava immediately remembered Izuku’s tenacity and determination the moment they identified who he was. He was someone to look out for. Spinner, on the other hand, derived his own assumptions about Izuku being a ‘true hero’ based on Stain’s actions on saving him. He was watching Izuku that closely.

Midoriya Izuku doesn’t stand out at all; Horikoshi says that it’s better the plainer he is, since ‘Deku’ is supposed to stand for that faceless everyman who doesn’t hesitate to do kind acts unconditionally. But in spite of that, in other words, people from different walks of life still notice plain Midoriya.

It’s true that he doesn’t get loudly applauded for his every victory. The cameras are nowhere to be found when he accomplishes something particularly All Might levels of media-worthy.

But is it really tragic for Izuku that he simply does saving for saving’s sake?

Behold, the reactions over the poetic explanation of Izuku’s hero name.

The “Popularity” Of Midoriya Izuku

Because let me tell you now, the post that talks about the “uselessness” of Midoriya Izuku reflects how his kindness is already celebrated.

Izuku still gets the recognition he’s due for his heroism, albeit in ways that we don’t usually think of as “enough.” People he saves or meets get internal revelations when they meet him. They change their views, they would start aiming for the better. Even from the beginning, his are acknowledgements that are more personal. It contrasts against All Might’s, whose goodness and greatness felt so distant and unattainable it created a hierarchy and a divide.

In-universe, Izuku’s kindness endures, his kindness demands change. With a little push from Uraraka’s kind act of teaching him how to reclaim Deku by pointing out how it sounds like dekiru (I can do it!), he gains confidence and makes the revolution last further. Deku is a phenomenon, and a society built upon the premise of ‘being a deku who can save everyone’ is a worthy thing to be remembered by all on its own. By making Deku his hero name, Deku becomes timeless (like the poet of Ame ni mo Makezu on his deathbed). All Might won’t be almighty forever, but anyone can be a ‘nobody who lends a hand to those who look like they’re asking for help.

And that, I think, is the best recognition of all.

The “Uselessness” of Midoriya Izuku

Today, Hori shares an interesting fact through his author’s note:

image

The poem is called Ame ni mo Makezu in Japan, written by Japanese poet Kenji Miyazawa, and it is a very famous poem. The verse Horikoshi is referring to is [ミンナニデクノボートヨバレ] (originally written in katakana) or “minna ni deku-no-bō to yobare”. Translated straight, means “Called useless by all.”

image

I’ve always wondered why Izuku never really gets credit or widespread acknowledgement whenever he wins villain fights, of how he doesn’t seem to be known more than being ‘the boy who broke his bones during the U.A. Sports Festival.’ The shared victory against Stain was credited to Endeavor, his personal fight against Overhaul was never televised, and his defeat of Gentle Criminal was never relayed to his classmates.

Even now, he’s known as ‘the cryptid who saves people.’ In the span of the entire manga, Deku never really sought popularity nor money. The closest he did this was when he was told by All Might to announce his presence to the world via the Sports Festival, but even then, he prioritized saving his classmate over winning and wasn’t recognized for his previous victories. He didn’t even receive a single internship offer aside from Gran Torino. Plus, Deku doesn’t exude a natural charm when it comes to scripted interviews.

The poem:

image

The poem illustrates a person who lives simply, who helps those who are in need of help, and doesn’t get praise for it (nor desires to be praised.) So aside from it’s other meaning ‘dekiru’ or ‘I can do it!’, Deku as a hero name means that he doesn’t seek credit for doing what should come naturally.

But since Izuku choosing it for a hero name is yet another statement: he still hopes to become someone that everyone aspires to. That is, by asking people to call him Deku, he becomes a ‘No One who can save everyone.’

And that is the theme of BnHA. Izuku is supposed to symbolize the turning point, the revolution against the broken Hero Society, the society which is built upon the self-interests of “Heroes” barring a few. Izuku choosing Deku as a name means to impart that anyone who ‘helps/reaches out a hand to those who needed saving without expecting anything in return’ is already a hero.

Boyfriend! Izuku is tenderness personified. He's attentive to the smallest details, always listening to what you like, what makes you smile, even when you don't say anything. He remembers everything. Even what you thought you said in passing. He jots it down somewhere, in a small corner of his mind, to remember it later.

Boyfriend! Izuku loves giving you little gifts. They're never extravagant things. They're presents with real meaning. Small things, but they shine with thoughtfulness and love for you.

Boyfriend! Izuku also likes writing you letters. Letters full of beautiful, well-written words because he wants every sentence to be perfect. He draws clumsy little hearts, but so cute. He puts everything he feels for you into them; you can't help but shed a little tear while reading them.

Boyfriend! Izuku also creates things just for you. Paper flowers, often tulips in your favorite color, carefully folded during his rare moments of rest. He offers them to you, embarrassed but proud, hoping it will make you smile.

Boyfriend! Izuku blushes when you kiss his cheek in thanks. He looks at you like you're the most beautiful thing he's ever seen, because you are. Even when you're at your worst.
