why are all the star trek games based on war and ship command and galactic fighting and war. i want diplomat simulator. i want skyrim for star trek. i wanna talk to a bunch of aliens about their farming rivalry and then go to the planet where everyones an italian mobster. i dont give a shit about upgrading the torpedoes on my battle cruiser to level up and destroy other ships in the New Online MMORPG. i want my entire ship to malfunction because an alien laid an egg in the nacelles and then i want to fix it by raising the alien as my own and then tossing it into space. what’s so hard to understand.

the only time it was actually funny and entertaining when a "ship" was "confirmed" by someone who worked on the show was when someone asked rene auberjonois at a panel what the nature of quark and odo's relationship was and he replied "sexual." without elaboration

Civil Defense might be the funniest episode of ds9 to me... the way the camera keeps cutting to closeups of characters' shocked faces every time something new goes wrong. dukat's stupid little "attention bajoran workers. pleaseee stop rioting pleasepleaseplease ❤️ ok thanks" message playing on repeat until everyone's sick and tired of it. the fanfic plot of quark and odo getting trapped in odo's office and thinking theyre about to die. kira's iconic "Time for a less subtle approach" before just shooting a door with a phaser. jake sisko climbing through a tube. garak dramatically waltzing into ops just to tell everyone he has high enough security clearance to do that, but he can't do anything to help the station Not self-destruct. but he's here now :) the Science Fiction Device that looks like a cartoon bomb that materializes in the replicator and starts blasting indiscriminately in ops. gul dukat beaming aboard in the You Know I Had To Do It To 'Em pose and proceeding to have a calm and collected conversation with everyone in ops who's currently being shot at. ordering a tea from the replicator and allowing it to continue shooting at everyone while he and garak insult each other. garak brings up dukat's dad. still getting shot at. dukat realizing he's gotten himself stuck on ds9 about to blow up and making the walter white D: face. garak telling dukat to stop flirting with kira. "I should've executed you years ago" "you tried".

my new favorite timelines discourse is the recent critiques on the forums about this week’s new artwork, like how the diseased changeling founder’s flakes just don’t look quite flakey enough

for me? it was s2e8 “necessary evil”. that’s when I knew deep space 9 was going to be different.

star trek has done murder mystery episodes before– yanno they’re fun, they’re a great format for a well paced forty five minutes where we can learn more about our characters and get some cheeky twists along the way.

“necessary evil” elevates that trope by setting the mystery on terok nor. it’s literally our first flashback look at the ugly political past of the space station. as an audience we’ve been learning to love and trust the warm vibes of the show’s setting– seeing a version of this place that’s dystopian, that’s horrific, that nonetheless features so many of the characters we know? it feels so fuckin visceral.

I will never forget the final twist in this episode. I will never forget learning alongside Odo what it really means for people to make the choices they must in the face of dehumanization, and the fallout that’ll haunt them for years. the realization that sometimes the most obvious truth is the profoundest one, and that sometimes all the twists in the world land you right where u started

the moment the character asks Odo if he can ever trust them again, and the shot lingers, and ends.

the episode ends there

that’s when I knew that this show wasn’t going to be like other trek. that’s when I knew this was going to be a story about the nuance, the incongruity, the unresolution and the things left hanging behind when an episode ends. that’s when I knew the writers on this show would wake up and choose artistic greatness in defiance of conventional tv wisdom.

one of the most underrated things about star trek is the way every other character is highly proficient in a truly random instrument. they're like broken little dnd characters with too many proficiencies. I love it.
