A tribute to the City of Tears

Unlike what people thought,
the Dreamers were aware of the world even in the Dream.
So Lurien continued to watch.
For that was his duty.

Perhaps,
the title of ‘Watcher’
suits him now
more than it ever did when he was awake.
The Watcher's gaze wanders the city like a ghost.

The endless sound of dripping rain, light glinting off the wet streets.
It didn't always rain in the city.
In the years
since the city was built,
the rain was a relatively new development.

But now even Lurien
finds it easier
to imagine the view outside the windows without rain
than to remember the city of before.

Every day the city the Watcher knows falls into ruin.
And Lurien's worn out memories
fade bit by bit
leaving only the vague impression
that 'it wasn't always like this.'

A song echoing amidst the patter of rain.
Traces of a dream different from that of the Dreamers.
Or perhaps a requiem from the city to itself.

In either case
the song is not for Lurien.
Lurien loved the Kingdom’s Capital,
the heart of Hallownest.
He did not live the age
where songs for a ruin were sung on the streets.

The streets echo with the footsteps of busy bugs.
Peaceful silence hangs in the Spire
and Lurien sits at his telescope.

Perhaps
if you cover your eyes
you could pretend
that Lurien’s beloved city
hasn't changed at all.

But the Watcher never turns away.

The wanderers call this place
the City of tears.
They will never realize
just how apt the name is.

there have been plenty of amongusified hollow knight characters, but i haven't seen the dreamers yet, so i kinda had to. props for geography being so boring i'd though of this instead of doing my homework.

after reading @spooduce-spook s latests chapter (After All on Ao3, it has wonderful writing, i could not recommend it more! i also may or may not help flow ideas from time to time so im a tad bias but still!!) i decided to use mspaint (in my english class with the keypad sdhdf it adds to it i swear!!) to create this work of art AKA what I think baby hornet painted in the chapter

it's a pic of her and her mums + lurien and his butler as an after thought because I hc she grew really close to them in the time they hung out and since she's prob not seen that many people she thinks of them like family

They still joke about that, but one of the poor fellas that day almost had an heart attack-

Lurien has always been fascinated by the trams, so he decides to personally check on the construction of the new line for the Resting Grounds...
Hegemol follows to ensure his protection...

And so, Soul Master swore he would have had his vengeance on the Watcher one day.

The idea is that back in the days, before they even got their titles, these two liked to partake in spells competitions and had a friendly rivalry (at least one thought it was friendly, the other went "you are my archnemesis now")
(This was such a dumb comic ah)
Spoiler: they never fixed the infiltration problem.

Being the Watcher's head knight isn't easy
They tend to wander off rather frequently
I blame @vulturereyyy for the lurimol's brainrot (not that I'm compaining)

• I still gotta decide how I want their powers to work, but I thought about giving them a special kind of foresight: basically while they can get glimpses of future they can also focus their power to control different areas as far as they've been there at least once.
Of course this power backfires: they get headaches and emigraines numerous times and have a rather low balance. Hence they usually needs support to walk and tries to sit as much as possible.
They also speak rather slowly (because of the damn migraines-)
They're the youngest dreamer, with Herrah being the oldest. As if being the shortest one wasn't enough.
(Their specific age? I dunno.)
Not a specific bug, I'm relying on the "you never see this character face on screen" plot.
Used to be on good terms (maybe...even friends?) with the Soul Master once, but eventually argued and stopped talking
Cue the reason they argued: Lurien decided to believe in the Pale King's plan to seal away the Infection and become a dreamer; Soul Master tried to convince them that the plan was bound to fail (true) and his would succeed (untrue). But Lurien didn't budge and remained loyal to the Pale King.
And for those who say Lurien is a simp- sure they could also be a simp, but consider-
Lurien really believed him, not only because of blind faith. If a god older than the kingdom itself told you he knows how to stop another god's act of wrath wouldn't you believe him? At least you would be desperate to believe him. Because if a god can't defeat another then who else could?
Now, if you told them about the vessels and the Abyss, well....they wouldn't like it at all. And I mean at all.
The bugs they were closest to were their butler, Monomon and Hegemol.
I like to include Hegemol because they both were the guardians of the city back in its prime. So I like to think they were close :D
Plus I think Hegemol was somehow involved with the Watcher's knights and wanted them to be highly trained to protect Lurien :)

Having a baby face doesn't really help-
I don't headcanon Lurien as a specific bug, but I do like to give them many magical eyes :D
Also the comic is just a silly idea, I mean in a modern society such as Hallownest it would be quite silly that your young looks overshadow your actual experience and competence in an field you've studied years in, making other bugs belittle your opinions. Right? :)
