Then one day you wake up
And realize you’re an adult
And you’re rinsing out cans to recycle
Like your father,
And you’re rubbing your aching hands
Like your mother,
And days whisk by much too fast
For your liking,
And imagination starts to decay
Like they told you would happen
And you’re stuck in a meaningless job
You were told to acquire, so you
Would have something to do for awhile
Which meant until the life was
Sufficiently beaten out of you
And your will to live was as slim
As the hair on your head, a lost cause
To the society in which you bear
Upon caving shoulders.
And before you know it,
The world keeps going
On and on without you
As you lie still in the box you spent
The last few pennies you earned on,
Not even allowed to squirm around
And tell if it was worth it.

A mastered voice is not unlike
A well tuned, polished instrument
That can captivate the mind
As well as the world
And yet,
My mouth falls open
And out tumbles a nasally
Screech that I feel I should
Apologize for, should I?
Words trip and stutter their way
Through tense teeth
Out into the world
To be heard, judged
And stranded forever
In the cold air
Keeping you waiting as I gag
On my own thought
Steam billows from hot ears
As I regain my verbal footing
And tentatively try again,
Cheeks burning alive
My trepid tongue
My own worst enemy.
