I would, with all due disrespect, like to officially disown that person from the fandom

Like no. I cannot see you as the author of something so amazing and open-minded. I cannot hate on the world you have shown to everyone. But I can stop associating you with it. Harry Potter is just not yours. A wonderful world like that has no business being under the control of such a disgusting and pathetic individual.

I wanna address something I’ve seen a lot of. Bear in mind that this post is not addressing or defending anything J.K. Rowling has said about the trans community. To be clear, trans rights are human rights. But this post is not about that. This is strictly about some of the racism accusations I’ve seen. I just wanted to clarify some things so that people don’t feel guilty for enjoying books that many are claiming to themselves be racist. The first thing I wanted to clarify is about house elves. House elves are not based on slavery, as many people have claimed. House elves are actually taken directly from English folklore. Almost every detail is pulled directly from there, so this is an extremely easy claim to debunk. I also wanted to address the discussion about goblins. First, I will say that goblins have always been portrayed as greedy with large hooked noses, though that could definitely be related to antisemitism. However, the fact of the matter is that Rowling never described the goblins as having hooked noses in the books. The only goblin described as having a hooked nose was Griphook. It was just one of his facial features. All of the goblins having hooked noses was a decision made by the film team, not Rowling. The final things I wanted to discuss are the names. Two in particular. Cho Chang and Kingsley Shacklebolt. The argument about Kingsley in particular is just ridiculous. The last name Shacklebolt has nothing to do with slavery any more than Flitwick does with candle wicks or Lockhart does with Locks or Hufflepuff does with smoking or Bagshot does with shooting bags or Fudge does with chocolate- you see my point. The books contain a myriad of ridiculous names that are not innuendos, so why should we assume this one is? As for the Cho Chang matter, yes, they are both last names. However, there was clearly no racist intent in this. She saw the names. She thought they sounded good together. It’s alliterative, like so many other names in her books. That’s it. So are the books a little insensitive by today’s standards? Yes. But so are a lot of things. Hindsight is 20/20 people. Are they racist though? No, they’re not. So think whatever you want about the books’ author, but the books themselves are not racist, so please feel free to read them without any guilt. They are wonderful books that have managed to make hundreds of millions of people happy, and it’d be a shame to stop people from reading them because of false information being spread on the internet.

Me: Man, Harry Potter is so dreamy.

Friend: Yeah, Daniel Radcliffe is pretty hot. He needs to ditch the beard though.

Me: No no. Not Daniel Radcliffe. Harry Potter.

Friend: But-

Me: Shhh... Harry Potter.

This year I had a Spanish teacher named Ms. McConnel, which was really difficult for me because for the first couple weeks I kept accidentally calling her Ms. McGonagall.

So... it finally downed on y'all that Rick Riordan portrayed pocs inappropriately? Are we surprised a white cishet man from usa wrote poc from a point of ignorance in a problematic way? Come on! Pocs have been criticizing him for years but y'all wouldnt LISTEN.

I'm not really into cancel culture because it doesnt work. This people dont get "erased" from history, their mistakes get erased while their art lives on - they should be acknowledged and held accountable. And I understand people make mistakes and they should have room to grow. But what irks me about seeing "he tries" type of posts defending him is that he doesnt. Maybe when he wrote the books a decade ago he was trying, and well intentioned. I can understand that. And yet if you read his "apology" you'll see he isn't trying anymore. Hes done growing and caring. Instead of writing "I get how it can be offensive, I didn't know better back then, knowing what I know now I would've written this characters differently" but no, he tried to defend it and stood by it. He needs to be held accountable. He needs to know this is not okay. Stop defending him with "the books were very subversive/progressive for their time" that can be said for a lot questionable works of fiction (like Harry Potter or To Kill a Mockkngbird for example) and it doesnt make it right. If we were just talking about what he wrote ten years ago it would be different, we could say that he wasnt being racist but that hes portrayal of poc was problematic for his lack of information, but no, he decided to take the racist label by steppping in and taking a stand defending his previous mistakes and not listening, and trying to decide over poc what is racist - instead of acknowledging he made a mistake and moving on. We grown folk but hes not being mature or "trying".

The only positive thing about JK Rowling being a terf on main was that I could detect and unfollow every single "feminist" page that defended her and were terf on main while doing so too

Good winter cleansing 🧹🧼🗑

You know what? No. No, Hatsune Miku did not write Harry Potter.

J. K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter. And we need to accept that.

Harry Potter isn’t some pure unproblematic beacon of perfection that we can just choose to erase the scummy author from and enjoy without guilt. Harry Potter is very much rooted in Rowling’s view of the world. The blatant antisemitism in the portrayal of the goblins, the entire race of slave creatures that actually really like being slaves and Hermione’s attempts to free them are largely played off as a joke, the almost complete dearth of canon characters of color (and then when she does put canonical characters of color in, they’re… Nagini…), the complete lack of respect for other cultures (the Japanese wizarding school literally translates to “Magic Place” in Japanese, Cho Chang is not even remotely a proper Chinese name, don’t get me started on her usage of Native American folklore), the almost complete lack of LGBTQ+ characters, the “Dumbledore is gay!” baiting, the lycanthropy-as-HIV metaphor that involves one of the werewolves intentionally infecting as many people as he can, with a preference for targeting children, no less…

These are all very much present in Harry Potter. They’re not things you can just ignore. And they’re there because Rowling wrote them in.

I know you read Harry Potter as a kid and loved it. I know when you read Harry Potter as a kid you probably didn’t even notice how shitty all this stuff was. I certainly didn’t. But you can’t go back to that time. You can’t go back to when you were 10, when you were consuming this media and loving it uncritically without notice or regard for its more problematic elements. You can’t go back to being a kid again.

And that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’re required to wholeheartedly condemn this important part of your childhood. You can still enjoy these books while acknowledging that they’ve got some really shitty things in them. You can enjoy Harry Potter as a mature adult. You don’t have to be a kid again to like it. And you’re perfectly allowed to hate on Rowling for her shittiness, past and present, while still loving Harry Potter.

So don’t say Harry Potter was written by Hatsune Miku. It wasn’t. It was written by J. K. Rowling, warts and all.

Really hope the things JK Rowling has been saying in regards to Nazis and Trans related literature recently will open more people's eyes to the truth. to so openly defend Nazi bullshit like this is so blatantly evil, but the thing is that it's always been like this when it comes to Anti-LGBT groups, especially TERFs who have a noticeably high percentage of Nazis at their rallies. if you can look at Joanne and see how wrong she is for her hate then please can you do the same in regards to Hamas, the leaders of Palestine and the radical Islamists? please? in recent times many queer protests for Palestine have been hated by the very people you blindly support, people who if given the opportunity would kill you! I am once again begging for people to finally see the truth and to stop calling for the end of Israel, the one safe place for people like us, you people go on and on about the children, well then where would a young Lesbian girl go if there is no Israel? she would have the same fate as those during October 7th, she would have to hide or risk an awful fate such as rape and being burnt alive. think of the young gay boy who would be killed by his family, be thrown off a building or be put in jail just for having a boyfriend... they would be safe in Israel, think of the young trans kids who in Israel can access healthcare, the women who can access abortion! none of that in Palestine as it is now Under Hamas! please PLEASE STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND THINK! THE ONLY THING PALESTINE AND GAZA NEED TO BE FREED FROM IS HAMAS!

With my recent Harry Potter posts gaining traction, I just want to make an important note:

You are not a bad person for having enjoyed Harry Potter. You are not a bad person for finding it hard to let go of something so ingrained into your life. You are not a bad person for enjoying the overall story of Harry Potter despite the bigotry JK Rowling managed to smatter into it.

Nobody should be telling you that you are. Your past relationship with Harry Potter is not the issue.

The issue is what you and we all do moving forward with the new information and facts that we know.

And the facts are that JK Rowling is a rampant and proud bigot who is hellbent on using the fortune Harry Potter made her to actively pursue the entire trans community with hostile intent.

And she does not care. She is happy that she is doing it. She is happy that people oppose her because it gives her an excuse to play victim and paint trans people who oppose her as violent, aggressive and evil.

This is not about how you engaged with Harry Potter in the past. Or even how you engage with it privately. This is about whether or not you choose to contribute toward her mission and towards the persecution of trans people right now.

Because when you buy that licensed merch in the store, she gets part of the profit. When you go to Harry Potter World, she gets part of the profit. When you buy the Harry Potter game, she gets part of the profit.

And all of those things result in three consequences:

It shows the marketing departments that Harry Potter is still a cashcow.

It shows JK Rowling that she can say and do whatever the hell she wants and nothing is going to stop that money rolling in.

She is given a steady cashflow which she uses to bankroll anti-trans movements and spokespeople and government petitions.

That is the reality of your choice from here on out. That is why people are asking you to set aside what you once had with Harry Potter and to stand with the people she has made it her life's mission to destroy.

You don't even have to let go of it completely. Just let go of the interactions that directly fund JK Rowling. Just cut off the cashflow she's using to ruin the lives of people she's never even met.

Buy fanmade merchandise or learn how to make your own. If you're cosplaying? Buy unofficial cosplays or buy second-hand off resale websites. Same with other merchandise.

If you want to watch Harry Potter, there are hundreds of non-licensed steaming websites showing it which do not contribute royalty income to JK Rowling.

If you're writing Harry Potter fanfiction, use a site like AO3 which will defend you tooth and claw if she gets desperate and starts coming after fan creators.

Harry Potter might be the comforting memories of your childhood, but JK Rowling is an active threat to the literal livelihood of trans people. People who could lose legal rights and protections simply because of one vicious woman with a bigoted agenda and deep pockets.

All we're asking is that you compare your reasons for enjoying Harry Potter with the facts of why you should make a few simple, easy choices to avoid bankrolling her and determine which is more important.

Or rather, which one should be more important.

And make the right choice.
