āNico Di Angelo is a token gay! His coming out scene sucked!ā babes Iām BEGGING you to remember 2013 gay characters were not allowed in childrenās media.
Lemme say that again: In 2013, it was expected that gay characters would be censored in childrenās mass media.
Remember Korra? How she and Asami had to settle for ambiguous handholding rather than a kiss? That was fully a year after House of Hades came out. Nickelodeon said No Gays, the Children⢠canāt handle that. Too risky. And people said man that stinks, but thatās how these things go in 2014 America.
Gay marriage was literally still illegal in the vast majority of US states. As of October 8th, 2013 (House of Hades release date) Gay Marriage was only a thing in thirteen fucking states. California had only legalized it that year.
Gay people were still very much on the fringes of society. It was an acceptable political position on both sides of the aisle to be against the existence and equal rights of gay people.
Nico was legitimately a landmark character in queer representation. To my knowledge, there wasnāt before an openly gay main character in a bestselling ya/middle grade fantasy fiction series. It simply was not a thing. They didnāt exist. They werenāt allowed to exist.
I remember people crying. Finally. It was a watershed moment. Kids all across the world finally got someone who represented them. It was such a big fucking deal. And it was controversial!!! Not for the reasons it is today, but because people thought gay kids having representation was inappropriate.
Is Nicoās coming out a great scene? No, these days it leaves a lot to be desired. Itās not perfect by any stretch of the imagination and Iām sure Rick wishes he could change it. But the fact thatās the case is a wonderful reflection of how far weāve come.
All of your gay heroes in childrenās media have Nico Di Angelo to thank. It was important, and good. It deserves to be celebrated, even if weāve progressed past it since.
Here, have some recommendations of Advanced Gay literature!
1. Fires of the Faithful/ Turning the Storm by Naomi Kritzer. This duet is mostly a fantasy novel; the protagonist is also lesbian. There are some religious themes, but the protagonist could probably best be described as agnostic-ish. You can find the first one on Amazon here:Ā https://www.amazon.com/Fires-Faithful-Naomi-Kritzer/dp/0553585177
2. Proxy by Alex London. Iām not sure if it quite qualifies as Advanced Gay literature, as homophobia still exists in that universe and negatively affects one of the two protagonists, who is gay. Iām granting it a spot on the list mostly because the main problems are not the result of homophobia. Itās on Amazon here:Ā https://www.amazon.com/Proxy-Alex-London/dp/014751133X
3. The Just City by Jo Walton. This book is about a group of people trying to set up Platoās Republic. If you donāt like philosophy, youāll probably find it boring, but if you do, especially Platoās works, you might like it. Several characters are mentioned to be in relationships with people of the same gender. Although sexual attraction to anyone is discouraged, this isnāt applied any more harshly to the same-gender-attracted characters. I will warn you that there are a few rape scenes, so if that bothers you you should probably stay away. Itās on Amazon atĀ https://www.amazon.com/Just-City-Thessaly-Jo-Walton/dp/0765332663
Those are just the first few to come to mind; if you want more recommendations message me.

Some of you might have seen me complaining about my dissertation recently and I would really appreciate it if anyone could take some time to fill in this survey for my research.
Iām looking into the idea of rainbow washing and whether brands using the pride logo and being inclusive in their adverts actually convinces people that theyāre an inclusive company for the LGBTQ+ community - or if weāre all just cynical about corporations using pride for profit.

Asexuals were always part of pride and it really fucking shows when people think it's a recent term.
