“haha odo is so beige and bland and boring despite being a literal shapeshifter” like ok yes I laugh at those jokes too and find them funny I literally have no issue with them but sometimes I also wanna talk about how that’s kind of the whole point of his character.
like odo’s abilities and way of being is so unlike any other known species in the alpha quadrant that it’s shown to be disturbing and off-putting to a lot of people — or at the very least that’s what he was led to believe. like we see this in the alternate where mora tries to convince him he’ll either be locked up in a prison or put in a zoo to gawk at if he’s perceived to have committed any sort of crime or transgression.
so despite being able to literally become anything he can think of, he chooses his default presentation to be as standard, bland and uninteresting as he possibly can. male, always in a beige uniform, very standard hair cut.

i really got to hand it to rené auberjonois because this man would be in a room, pounds of prosthetic on his face, the only other character being a vial of orange jelly, and manage to convince me that he is a guy experiencing something like fatherhood for the first time with said vial of goo and fully convincing me of it’s sentience. like i was watching that episode and genuinely stopped to remind myself that the goo wasn’t another actor, it was literally just him
Some interesting details of how Odo mimics voices and the practice it takes to do so.
I never put any thought behind Odo's capacity to mimic sounds. But changelings do it often, and in S4 E08 Little Green Men, Odo barks as the German shepherd, or at least I think he does.
This is both terrifying and hilarious. Imagine:
You pick up a tricorder and it makes all the same sounds and effects as any other, but then a hand shoots out of the readout display and pokes your eyes three stooges style.
Odo sitting quietly in a room full of Cardassians. He opens his mouth and releases the loudest fog horn sound ever heard, instantly killing everyone.
Amazing stuff.

i’m like actually genuinely crying a bit over this gif rn and this whole scene in general……..odo is just SO happy and thankful to quark for doing something that changed his life for the better. they’re so comfortable with each other here, just talking and having a genuinely nice and heartfelt moment together. odo’s goofy smile…..quark’s goofy smile……now that’s an “i love you and i love seeing you happy” smile if i ever saw one

onesided quodo angst is just quark kicking himself for never telling odo how he feels. Hating himself for never risking his ego by marching into the security office and telling odo right then and there. Always arguing with himself, "why couldnt you just say something!" but feeling like if he had said anything odo would have laughed, been disgusted, or even think quark was lying to distract him.
he put off telling odo for years. watching kira and odo become closer all the while. and eventually having to accept that the opportunity had slipped by. of all things to miss out on: an opportunity. he was a ferengi, he knew there was a chance with odo, but hes a coward. a huge awful coward who would rather blame everyone and everything else for his actions than dare put is own pride on the line. and it cost him a chance at something he wanted more than latinum.
he hates that stupid, fascist, changeling. that piece of a dangerous, powerful entity. he hates how odo hounds him, he hates how sneaky odo is, how lordly he acts. he hates that he can just turn into whatever his heart desires, he hates that odo doesnt love him back.

I’ve drawn a few creepy twisty Odos before, but I really wanted to explore what it might’ve been like in the show aand I wanted to draw more Odo being twisty. So this little comic sprung out of that!
This was a fun exercise and I learned a lot while putting it together. Like how much I love drawing Quark.
It’s so well written story and it’s absolutely cute and adorable and romantic and... oh, I’m afraid I don’t have so much words in my vocabulary to describe how much I enjoyed it!! Long story short, I LOVE this fanfiction and art with all my heart ♥ ♥ ♥
