“Um. Excuse you? I love painting my nails. It makes me type way faster.”
What she really meant was that it made her feel cooler to type with painted nails, but this is one of the rare occasions where she’s willing to blend fact and opinion.
Although, she does admit, “It’s just been a while since I’ve done my nails. And I usually scratch all the paint off pretty quickly.”
With a bustling sound, Katie drops his hand and squints Shiro down, “Look, are you really going to talk yourself out of a free pedicure? Because I don’t give out family discounts.”
“ no, no, i’ll take the manicure offer. i know how high your rates are. ”
he can’t help but to laugh affectionately at katie’s words as he runs with the joke. it’s a laugh he doesn’t get to use often enough these days, but this... this conversation about something MUNDANE as painting nails and the kidding around... it feels a lot like things used to be, and it’s nice.
“ why don’t you go grab your supplies, and i’ll wait here for you. set up a space for us to do all this. sound good? ”
@shieldedchild: "You.. You're actually dating Sendak? Oh-- Oh my god. Oh, my GOD. That's so gross! You're so gross! I hate it here!"
“ no, that’s not-- it isn’t-- ...it’s not like that, exactly. ”
it IS definitely something he never wanted to have to explain to anyone, though. OR have to admit out loud. the way he stumbles over his words makes this all the more evident.
“ it’s not... --we’re not dating, ” he tries to explain, hands raised in front of him, gesturing VAGUELY, almost like he’s trying to put the words together with his hands. lips purse for a tick, and shiro scratches the back of his head, looking away from katie. cheeks now a warm shade of red, he stares off into the distance like somehow he’ll find a way to get out of this conversation.
“ it’s complicated. ” but DEFINITELY gross. he knows that, and he doesn’t blame her for seeing it that way. he would, however, prefer if she kept her voice down so the ENTIRE CASTLE doesn’t hear. “ ...please don’t tell anyone else. ”

Both Shiro and Pidge like to brag about each other. Shiro will boast about Pidge’s accomplishments, which usually looks like, “Oh, this is Pidge, our tech specialist.” Meanwhile, Pidge will brag go on about Shiro’s potential, which usually looks like, “I bet Shiro could beat you up with one hand tied behind his back!” Either way, they’re both really proud of each other.
Spurred by Matt calling it a “rite of brotherhood,” Shiro tried coming up with his own embarrassing nickname for Katie. He tried basing it on her middle name, since he thought it was kinda silly that Sam and Colleen would name their daughter “Kelp” of all things. He went with “Kelpie,” which he thought was more cutesy than embarrassing, and Katie instantly started crying. Ever since then, he’s tried to steer clear of nicknames. The exception here being “Pidge,” of course; although, he finds himself stumbling over it sometimes. He still remembers the time Katie replaced Matt’s toothpaste with mayonnaise for calling her “Pudgey Pidgey.”
Re: Shiro generally steering clear of calling Katie “Kelpie.” Shiro totally used it more than once. Matt had to assure him Katie was just really good at crocodile tears, but after that, they’d occasionally team-up against Katie with their respective embarrassing nicknames for her. Katie always lost those fights, because the only nicknames she had for Shiro and Matt were either from her toddler-years or just straight up insults. She could try telling Sam or Colleen on them, but she’s the one that ended up in trouble. She dreads the day Shiro brings “Kelpie” back into the cycle.

“Okay, fair, but…” True to their sibling nature, she snatched his prosthetic hand and splayed out his fingers like they were hers to splay.
“Consider this: I could paint your nails, or your approximate to fingernails. I could do jet-black, so you could be discreet and fashionable.”
“ yeah? ” stifling an amused chuckle at her suggestion, he flexed his fingers, head tilting slightly to one side. fashion had never been something that came to mind when he thought of katie, but if she was THIS invested in customizing his arm, he could indulge her a little.
“ that would be a lot more subtle. alright, let’s do it. ...do you even have any nail polish around here? i don’t think i’ve ever seen you paint your nails. ”

“Hey, Shiro? Have you ever considered, Idunno.. accessorizing your arm? Maybe try some pastels instead of emo-gray?”
“ ...i’ve never really thought about it. the idea is kind of... ” frowning as he contemplates, his gaze drops to the prosthetic. “ ...a brighter colour would only draw more attention to it. ”
