you close your eyes and slip your phone into your pocket and knock on the door, keeping your eyes squeezed shut while you hear sounds behind the door. you can tell he only opened the door a crack at first before opening the door fully. his hand snatched yours and he began pulling you, where? you couldn’t say. it was silent, as always, and with your eyes closed all you could do was carefully walk behind him and pretend like your hand wasn’t sweating like hell in his. the walk was fairly short and you felt the fresh air after a minute or two so you could tell that you were outside. after another minute he slowly stops and you stop as well, eyes now more softly closed. you keep them closed and listen to the rustling and shuffling for a second before he says anything.
“salmon.”
you take that as your sign to open your eyes and when you do, you nearly gasped. there was a little blanket laid out with containers of fruit, bags of snacks, and small bottles of drinks. you feel your mouth fall into a pout, but the good kind. the kind where something is so cute you can’t do anything but pout. you look at him, his cheeks a little pink and his mouth exposed with a shy smile. you practically knock him over with a tackle as you hug him tightly, showing your gratitude as best as you could without your words. you two sat at the little blanket, eating snacks and stealing glances as soft music played from someone’s phone. it was sweet, almost scarily sweet. eventually you two were laying side by side on the blanket, looking up as stars slowly began popping up along the dark sky. you looked over at him for just a moment, admiring him before looking back up at the sky. suddenly toge sat up, urging you to join him. you sat up as well, watching him cover your eyes and motion for you to close them once again. you did just that and waited patiently.
“salmon.”
when you opened your eyes, again you were met with the cutest sight. toge holding a bouquet, seemingly handmade. he held it out to you, once again his face dusted with a cute pink. you took them carefully, taking the time to look at the individual flowers and smell the sweet scent. toge seemed to be getting impatient though. after only a minute he abruptly placed a hand on the bouquet and turned it, exposing a different side you hadn’t inspected yet.

you and toge are a little more tense than normal, the vibes not exactly how they used to be. but it was nice having your friend back. you guys were back to playing roblox and fortnite, having fun again and remembering how he pulled you in so quickly. he was funny, and sweet, and silly and everything in between. after a week it was easy to fall back into your old ways with him. always joking around, seeming to telepathically communicate. toge was immensely sorry, and you could tell he was. but you told him that the fact that he took responsibility for his actions and apologized was worth more than he he would ever know. soon you two became inseparable again, hanging out in eachothers rooms and always finding ways to go out and run errands together.
the both of you were laying on your bed, sharing a bowl of candy while playing games on your phones together. after sometime of playing you guys had closed the games for a moment. he had pulled up the notes app and tapped your shoulder to get your attention.
you felt nervous as you prepared the gift you had made him all that time ago. you set it up all nice and cute on the bed next him, making sure they were facing him and not dusty. when you gave him a tap on the shoulder he opened his eyes, which immediately searched for yours. when he followed your gaze he looked down at the little handmade paper enderman and flowers. you couldn’t tell what his reaction was at first, and you felt a pang of anxiety. does he not like it? does he think it’s stupid? does he think you’re stupid?
“tuna mayo?”
he asked, while his hands motioned to his body. you could understand the silent question, for me? you nodded, sending him a nervous smile while you felt your heart racing. before you could react he jumped up from his seated position, being sure to not disturb his gift, and yanked you into a tight hug. you laughed and hugged him back.
“salmon.”
oddly, you couldn’t decipher his meaning this time. you hadn’t included the words ’i like you, idiot’ like you had originally intended but you hoped the gesture itself was enough to get him to understand.

it had been a week since you and rafe had broken up, and you didn't know what hurt more. the fact you were no longer with him, or the fact he hadn't tried to reach out. not once.
you know you couldn't be upset about that, considering you broke up with him, but part of you hoped he would've tried harder to stay.
and that hurt more than anything.
because now you were left wondering, had it really been that easy for him to let go? had he moved on ? had you spent the last eight months loving someone who was only waiting for an excuse to walk away?
your phone sat on your nightstand, untouched, as if the silence from him was something tangible, something suffocating. you had checked it a million times, hoping to see his name flash across the screen. but it never did.
not a single message. not a single missed call. nothing. you should be relieved. this should be making it easier. but it didn't at all.
you didn't even ask sarah how he was doing as you were too scared to find out the answer. what if he was doing good? what if he realised actually he was better off without you? what if he was happy without you?
what if losing you didn’t break him the way losing him was breaking you?
the thought made your chest tighten, a sharp, suffocating ache settling deep in your ribs. you had spent the last week convincing yourself that you did the right thing, that walking away was the only option. but if that were true, if you had really made the best decision, then why did it feel like this?
you swallowed the lump in your throat, blinking up at the ceiling as if that would stop the tears from forming.
the truth was, no matter how badly you wanted to hate him, no matter how much you told yourself you had to let go, a part of you was still waiting.
waiting for him to show up. waiting for him to fight for you.
waiting for something that clearly wasn’t coming.
every little thing reminded you of him. you hadn't seen the girls in a few days, as even being around them reminded you of all the times you'd been together as a group. everything was so quiet now.
the quiet was the worst part of it, the loneliness. the brutal realisation that maybe you had been waiting for nothing. that maybe rafe had already decided you weren’t worth the fight. because if he had really loved you the way he claimed, wouldn’t he have come after you by now? wouldn’t he have done something?
but all you had was silence.
you clenched your jaw, trying to force yourself to stop thinking about him, but it was impossible. his hoodie still hanging on the back of your chair, the faint smell of his cologne on your pillow, the way your body still instinctively turned toward your phone at every notification, only to find nothing.
you hated that he still had this much of a hold on you. you hated that you were here, in this room, drowning in heartbreak while he was god knows where, probably just fine. probably moving on.
a fresh wave of nausea rolled through you at the thought.
had he already found someone else?
had he kissed someone new with the same mouth that used to whisper i love you?
the idea of it sent a sharp pain through your chest, but you shook your head, forcing yourself to breathe. it doesn’t matter. he's not yours anymore.
that thought alone nearly broke you.
because deep down, no matter how much it hurt, you still wanted to be his.
