Deadtired wing fic but like both of them had theirs broken/cut off. Maybe it could’ve been Ras or joker for Tim (If we’re going the joker jr route), and GIW or evil parents for Danny? Idk but I wanna see it get explored a bit :))

Here's the thing:

Tim knows that staring is rude. Manners have been drilled into his mind since he first learned to talk, maybe even before that. Don't talk with your mouth full, sit up straight, look people in the eye, but don't stare, because staring is rude. Lessons like that.

Typical things for a rich family's son, even if Tim was far too young to understand them at the time.

But Tim is undeniably staring now, manners thrown out the window, because the boy standing in front of him has broken wings, too. Or maybe they aren't broken, exactly, but one of them is bound tightly in a sling and the other is almost stipped bare of feathers. And it's rude, and it's awful, and Tim should feel bad that he can't tear his eyes away from them.

The boy is here for the same reason as Tim, waiting in line to order a coffee, or maybe a tea, or whatever else they serve. He's minding his own business, messing around on his phone, and-

"Hi," Tim blurts out, mouth moving faster than his brain.

And the boy turns to look at him, and his brain freezes as Tim actually looks at him. Messy hair, denim jacket over a graphic t-shirt -- does that read boo? He reads it again, and it really does -- and tired blue eyes. Tim swears that those eyes stare directly into his soul.

"Hi?" The other boy says, tilting his head like a goddamned cat. "Ya need something?"

Was it an accident? He thinks, but doesn't say. The Joker thought it be funny if he tore out my primaries, one by one, and took a knife to the flight feathers, and-

"Me too," Tim says, instead of any of that. "My wings, I mean, I'm grounded, too."

He spreads his wings the best he can, given the small space, but it's enough. Tim sees the moment it clicks for the other, knows when he spots the new feathers growing in, and the rough scars still healing around them.

They'll grow in fully, eventually, but Tim doesn't know if he'll ever be able to fly as fast as he used to. Doesn't know if they'll ever stop hurting, both in body and in mind.

"I'm Danny," the boy says, eyes wide. "I've never seen anyone else with wings like mine."

Tim grins, holding out his hand. "Tim," he says simply, "Can I buy you a drink? Anything you want, it's on me." Danny goes to speak, but Tim holds up his hand. "Wing issues are more common in Gotham than in most places, and if you're new here, I can show you around?"

"Everyone knows I'm new here," Danny mumbles, but he's grinning. "Sure, I'll take a drink, and--" he winks -- "I'll take that tour. Lead the way."

So people really liked this one so I added abit more detail and tried to make some things stand out more and actually blended Damians one, only issue is that I still can’t figure out time colouring because for some reason I can’t work with lighter ish colours. And Damians still looking at the sky xxxx❤️❤️.

Okay so this is about the extent of my ability to draw, but I couldn’t help myself I like eyes.... especially the batboys eyes ❤️❤️❤️ (they don’t actually completely look like this in canon just little ideas I have on their appearance(also limited eye shapes cause I can literally just draw one .. ))

Bernard Dowd and the Art of Recontextualization

I'm what you might call a "fake Batman fan" - that is, I've only watched most of the Batman animated series', all of the live action movies, most of the animated ones, played some of the video games... so, you know, probably thousands of hours of my life in Batman related media. But not the comics! Fake fan!

Frankly, I find the comics medium the way DC and Marvel do it to be really hard to follow. There's the fact that you can't really follow an individual solo character without them getting caught up in massive crossover events that ruin their arc and pacing, there's the soap-opera-iness that encourages cheap and revolving conflicts inherent to the longform monthly release schedule, the writer roulette, and there's also just that going back to try and thread a particular continuity or character is an exercise in frustration. Oh and the retcons. Everyone hates those. They've (basically) never been good. Don't remember this part it will never come up aga

But, you know, despite this - or maybe because of this - comics is a breeding ground for ideas. Because of the quick turnaround and the demand for novel conflicts, comics just churn out idea after idea. Good ideas, bad ideas, doesn't matter. Get it to print. Retcon it later if we write ourselves into a corner. Comics are often soooooo first draft coded. This is why I personally prefer adaptations - they often reimagine ideas and retcon them into new narratives where they can serve a more coherent plot. But what happens when a character is picked up for a second draft ... without actually contradicting the earlier material? While enriching the earlier material, even?

(SPOILERS for Tim Drake: Robin and uh... 20 year old comics under the cut!)

So, uh, quick disclaimer - because I have very little overall knowledge of DC's Comics continuity, there may be more interesting examples of times that what I'm going to point out was done. But I love Bernard and from a writer's POV I'm impressed with the way they did it so we're talking about Bernard lmao

The Beginning (Robin 1993) - Reading comics from the 2000s hurts in a way I can't describe

Okay so I heard Tim Drake is dating a guy now? (Penny Sonic voice) Whoa he's bisexual I didn't know that! I'm sure people on the internet are being very normal about this. Cool let's find out more about his new bf. I like starting from the beginning... so like yeah hold on while I crack open the Robin comic and take down what this guy's deal is.

So basically the TL;DR of Bernard in his original appearances is that he seems to be an attempt to introduce some normal stakes teen drama into Tim's life. He has all the Funny Guy Friend Classics - he's got an inflated sense of his proficiency at pulling girls, he's inexplicably drawn towards the protagonist (who is cooler than him), he wants to date the most popular girl in school, and he wants to get down with older women!

This might just be me but while I was going through this I thought like, he almost reads a little uncanny, like he's been filtered through a Disney Teen Special. In practice he mostly serves to introduce Tim to the Real Plot, Darla Aquista, and be one of his ties to civilian life, which is, like, fine. He's ultimately just a background character and he's so unimportant that he only has one appearance after their school gets shot up(!!!), which is, again, to be more of an accessory to the Darla plot.

After this display of "wow this guy's kind of lowkey insane for offering to his resurrected bestie supervillainess to be her manager actually", he's dropped forever. Comics! We're not gonna unpack that.

The Sequel (Batman: Urban Legends) - We're Gonna Unpack That

Until almost two decades later when he calls Tim up for a date. And while I'm trying to skim over a lot to get to the point here and I don't really know the FULL context, it is notable that Tim is in the middle of an identity crisis / the cusp of adulthood when this happens (I think he just lost a spleen or something. That sucks dude). It's pretty implicit that part of the reason he's going to see Bernard is because he's someone familiar in a time when he's facing a lot of new and scary stuff.

And at first blush, he really does seem like the same dude. The familiar arm over the shoulder, the banter, it's all very casual and similar to the ribbing from high school -

- and I guess nothing has happened to Bernard in the interim haha he's just the funny friend guy right?

I really like the way they did this. I'm just unambiguously going to praise how good this is if you just came off the 2000s stuff. Comics have kind of breakneck pacing by nature but they really manage to condense down and then pull off a neat sleight of hand over the course of like four pages here. They re-establish Bernard as a silly guy and then wham you with the fact that yeah actually we ARE gonna unpack that. Fuck you Tim Drake life is ever changing and nothing stays the same

So the TL;DR on the rest of the Urban Legends storyline is that stuff like, HAPPENED to this guy while our focus was elsewhere. He learned martial arts, presumably so that he wouldn't be so helpless in the next school shooting level event, he got into a pain cult, he's just Not Doing Well. We find out, reading between the lines, that calling Tim on a date was probably one of his last attempts to reach out to someone when the cult stuff was getting really bad.

I've heard people complain that Bernard is uninteresting or not a character or entirely focused on his relationship with Tim, and I think that criticism is really weird considering that his entire re-debut focuses on the point that he's been having his own life and making his own (often wild) decisions - ones that really changed the course of his life - while Tim was gone. And it's also notable that this story is about how the fact that he's his own person and has changed and has made the nerve-wracking decision to take action and call Tim inspires Tim himself to take a leap and fling himself into the uncertain waters of young adulthood.

So that's how Bernard has changed. But that's not recontextualization, that's just the writers taking a guy and making him do another, cooler thing. Well hold the fuck on because we're not goddamn done.

What did he mean by th-

The Recontextualizerrrrr (Tim Drake: Robin) - Bernard is the funniest person in Gotham City. I'll not be taking constructive criticism on this

Tim Drake: Robin is the followup to the Urban Legends story and Tim is the main character fr. Obviously. but Bernard is also a major character. Later, he even gets to be a POV character. But they don't do that for several issues, instead treating us to his shenanigans from Tim's point of view as he solves a bizarre serial murder case and like, they're cute! And neither of them are normal in the slightest. I love that for them.

Again, TL;DR, there are a lot of interactions where Bernard talks to Tim both in and out of costume, but we don't get to see his POV until they go out to a restaurant and meet Bernard's parents there by accident and Tim has to run off to do Robin stuff. And like... a lot of stuff happens in this one bois. Whammy after whammy

We're suddenly introduced explicitly to a lot that was only implied or just completely unavailable before. Bernard's parents are ragingly homophobic. Probably were never great even before that. He suffers from depression. All that is a lot to. wait. hold on a second

he knows?????

HE KNOWS????

Okay so if you stop at this point and reread the entire run so far you find out that Bernard is in fact the biggest troll in the entire universe. This is the moment that cemented him as my favourite, by the way. Like I had a feeling that he knew and I was just laughing my ass off when my suspicions were confirmed.

But this is really interesting on top of that because Bernard has been revealed to be, at this point, a guy who you should look deeper than the surface to understand. Someone who masks his true self and whose true motivations you can only uncover if you're really looking past the facade. Even with Tim, he sort of offers Tim and Robin half the story each, taking advantage of Robin's "distance" to give out information he wants Tim to think about but that he's reluctant to talk about frankly while at the same time almost daring Tim to open up about his identity.

This is a really neat trick by the writers. It makes Bernard a multifaceted character who got to quietly develop while we were mostly focused on Tim, and there's some clever clever foreshadowing they set up in this run to achieve this. If it were just this, I would call it good writing.

But it actually goes one level deeper than that and becomes something really really special. because as we all know, Bernard was not conceived to be this way, he was a one-off guy who was kind of annoying and he was essentially retconned to be, like. Gay? Have depth? Be funny? All of those things?

The Seamless Retcon (Robin 1993 Again) - We took your guy and we gave him gay subtext and it worked astoundingly well

This is not a new observation btw, I've seen a ton of posts to this effect. But oh my god. Some of these panels really hit different with the new Bernard lore. Like holy fuck just read this back to back

There are tons of moments like this. There's SO MUCH that the revelation that Bernard is queer adds to his initially extremely underwhelming tenure in the Robin comics. A reread almost begs the question of what Bernard must have been thinking at any given moment! BRO YOU SAID YOU WANTED TO FUCK HIS STEPMOM. That's completely believable as a next-level closeting move and goes from kind of annoying to turbofunny.

Like yeah of course he's acting like a douche. His father is a status-chasing asshole and he's five racks deep in the closet. Of course he gravitates towards Tim - his gaydar is pinging and he thinks Tim is cute. And it's also pinging that Tim is like. You know

None of this would hit as hard if the writers had not set up Bernard as someone who masks so much. They worked it in that character trait to mean that you could always glean information deeper than the surface from his top level interactions.

Because of this, Bernard is really fucking interesting and he's a good character and he's one that gets better on reread. Like I said, that's a set of observations that are not new to me. But something that really gets to me is how seamless and intentional it is. It really feels like the writer sat down and took their time devising a guy that is believable as that other guy, but only if you read back with certain context.

The conclusion - Comics. Man.

So is this just about how Bernard is really fucking interesting and he's a good character and he's one that gets better on reread and that he can exist independent of Tim and all the haters are wrong. Yeah of course. 💖

But also like, I have thoroughly proven to myself that I was kinda wrong to just reject the published comics medium out of hand. I see now that there's room for the writer's roulette to hit the jackpot and that something I mistook as an outright flaw, the winding and unfocused and often improvised nature of it, can be ridden like a wave if you're skilled enough to do it. Meghan Fitzmarten is a goddamned genius.

I guess I have to read comics now. Fuck

It seems Dick Grayson hasn't fully moved on from Jason's death, even if he has been brought back from the grave.

“We all have our breaking points, Dick." Tim said cryptically, like he knew what Dick had done. "The only question is, can you come back from it?”

There was so much pity in Tim's eyes that Dick couldn't stand it. That pity should belong to someone else, anyone else. Just not him.

Money cant buy everything

A/N: this is base on a movie i watched on netflix the title was ‘Indecent Proposal’

You and Bruce decided to attend a gala thats been hosted by Vincent Beaumont basically a rich guy who wanted to surround himself with even more rich people and who better more to invite than the famous bruce wayne oh and it doesnt stop from there oh no he also invited the 'crown jewel of gotham' a nickname the press started calling you the very day you and bruce got married anyway normally you and bruce wouldnt go to these events or we would just leave early if the kids were with you and just use them for a reason you really did not want to go to the gala but bruce has been offered a deal and apparently he needed to 'take a look at it' honestly you dont know what wayne enterprises needed more than we already had well to make this 'less' boring you decided to bring the boys with you.

So here you are now in yours and bruce's room getting ready and still deciding on what dress would suit you more, although your hair and makeup was done you just couldnt choose between the dresses

"Hey hot stuff" a nickname you call bruce sometimes, women would just fawn over him billionaire bruce wayne former playboy, shrugging of the image is harder than it looks like i mean women are still fawning over him but ofcourse you would never let them take your brucey away (not that he would ever be fawned over)

"Red or blue?" You told him holding up the dress in both hands he turned to look at me he was already in his suit looking as handsome as ever jeez honestly he could be in his pajamas and would still look handsome.

He started to walk towards you as he looked at both dress then smiled "you know you can wear either of these and you'd still look as gorgeous as ever"

You laughed as you lay down the dress at the bed then wore the dress that you picked "oo you smooth talker" you told him as you smirked then went to look at yourself at the mirror smoothing out the dress.

"Only for you" bruce said as he hugged you from behind his chest at you back and placed his head at your shoulder it was small moments like this that would make you fall more in love with bruce if that was even possible 

You smiled then turned around fixing his tie "Lets get this over with you and the boys still have patrol later and i wouldnt want my favorite people in the world to get too tired" you looked him in the eyes then pecked his cheek while you get your purse then walked towards the door

"Ill just check on the boys" you told him as you give him one last glance before exiting the room .

You walk down the stairs to already hear shouting from tim and damian

"DAMIAN GIVE ME MY TIE" you heard tim yell as they chase each other around the house

"NOT UNTIL YOU GIVE ME BACK MY COAT" you heard damian yell back ahh these kids will be the death of you one day when they finally saw you coming down damian threw tims tie at his face as tim also threw the coat at damians face

"HE STARTED IT" you hear both of them yell  at the same time you laugh as you fix their clothes then hugged them.

"I swear i cant be mad at you two when your acting all cute" they both rolled their eyes neither admitting that it makes them happy when their mom babies them

"I WANT A HUG TOO" you hear someone scream from the stairs you look at the stairs and see dick running down the stairs then joining the hug

"Hello to you too dickie" you tell him as you ruffle his hair then kiss his head you let go of the boys to look around only to find baby #2 missing.

"Wheres jaybird?" You told them as you suddenly hear footsteps walking down

"Im here im here" you saw him go down the stairs

"Looking as handsome as ever i see" you told him as you also kiss his forehead then patting his chest, well the handsomeness does run in the wayne family i guess i mean look at those little cuties!

"Ok your dad is most probably waiting outside already lets go" we walked  to leave the manor then finally see bruce's loving gaze you smiled at him then pecked him on the lips before going inside the limo followed by the boys

The ride going to the gala was quiet a comfortable slience no one talked most probably getting ready to whatever chaos the paparazzi will do, once you finally arrived you sighed then exited the car  the boys were already blocking the flashes of the camera for you while bruce offered his hand to you while smilling.

"Such a gentleman Mr wayne" 

"Only for you Mrs Wayne"It brings you back in the day when you and bruce got married you guys couldnt stop calling each other 'Mr wayne' and 'Mrs wayne'!

You take his arms as you finally entered the gala you swear you saw the eyes of the women in the room become a dollar sign and the men glance at your body while the younger women glanced at baby #1 and #2 then dick giving them a wink the girls almost fainted when he did !

"Ah Bruce Wayne pleasure to see you here!"

"And to you Vincent" the man wasnt that old maybe just around bruce's age he switched his gaze from bruce to you the boys who was behind you already glaring at the man

"Mrs Wayne your even more beautifull in personal" he had that look in his eyes that any men had when they lay their eyes on a woman of their liking, lust

Bruce  tightened his grip on your arm ooooo Jealousbat is showing again it wasnt often that bruce would get jealous usually its when men are around or eyeing you like crazy.

"Come join me at the casino table Ive been losing all night maybe you would bring me luck Mrs Wayne" 

"Oh id rather stay with my husband and boys"

"Just for one game? Ill make sure its worth your time" 

"......one game i guess but i bet my husband would like to join" this guy was just very off, bruce would surely understand why your dragging him into the situation 

"Boys you can go around a bit in the gala but dont cause trouble im looking at you dick if i see another woman crying in front of our house i swear to god" 

"Yes mom" they all said in unison glaring at vincent before going around the event

"Come come the casino is this way" he ushered you trying to get a hold of you but bruce holds you closer and feeling comfort beside him

Once you reached the casino table the man hands you the dices you let go of bruce for a moment (he doesnt like admitting it but he always mentally whines when you arent beside him) as vincent betted 100 million 

"Just like that?" 

"Just like that"

Vincent smirked as he heard the numbers that was needed to win, jeez what a show off  you and bruce didnt really like bragging about your money you also taught your kids not to brag or how luck they are and that  they should also use their advantages to help other people

"Ok 9 or 11 get it the money is all yours" the man said the crowd was suddenly forming around the table interested on if you really were luck, as you were about to throw the dice vincent stopped your hand as he looks at you

"Arent you forgetting something?" He told me i held the dice in my hand kissed it then threw it on the table once i looked what number i got the crowd started roaring with suprisement

"See you are luck" vincent said to you, you didnt pay any mind to him as you frantically look for bruce around the table once you saw him you went to him then embraced him

"You know Bruce you have something i dont” Vincent said as he approached the two of you 

“and that would be?” 

“well you see both of us are very rich but you have her”

Vincent said as he looked at you once again there was lust in his eyes and desperation if you will man this guy really doesnt get the clue

“you cant buy Love” 

“oh really?” vincent told you as he smirked then turned his attention to bruce who was holding my hand tightly

“Bruce what if i told you id give you my entire company”

“But in return......” 

“one night with your wife, just pretend its real”

he smirked obviously it IS real he just wants to see what bruce will say to him obviously he thinks bruce is another man that can be wooed with power and not knowing your bond with Bruce is invincible and that nothing could break it.

“He would tell you to go fuck yourself” you told vincent before bruce can even get a response.

“i didnt hear that from him” he turns to Bruce obviously not believing that he would actually say that, you see Bruce’s hand clench as he glares at him 

“i would tell you to go fuck yourself” Bruce told him Vincents eyes widened in shock obviously expecting him to say ‘deal’ or ’sure’ since Bruce did have a reputation of being a playboy Vincent thought Bruce would just get another wife and that all he wanted was power

“w-what? come on man surely you can find another whore out there to fuck let me have her” he told him Bruce lets go of my arm as he grabbed the man by the collar gaining attention from the people around you

“listen here you scum i wouldnt give up my wife for the world and i dont really appreciate you calling her such word and need i remind you if we are talking about power the wayne enterprises is far more powerfull than you company” 

“o-okay man pl-please let me go” Bruce lets him go as he inhales deeply suddenly you here a scream going towards you 

“ YOU BASTARD” you see damian going through the crowd then punching the vincent face repeatedly until he got knocked out since he was on the floor it was easier for damian to reach him

“Oh my god dami stop!” you tell him as you grab him then pulled him towards you hugging him in reflex as he calms down 

Suddenly the rest of the boys join you and looks at the man knocked out on the floor as the screams of other party goers were loud

“What happened!?” Dick asked as he looked at the man on the ffloor with a broken nose Damian told the boys what happened and you can also see the anger in their eyes How dare this guy call their mom such a name!

“oh” Dick said as he turned his attention to the man at the floor then kicked him

“there now he also has a broken rib” Dick said as he laughed join by the other boys it wasnt often that any of them would laugh like that but here they are, you sigh a little embarrased on what happened, you turn you attention to bruce as he walked toward you and the boys

“i think we should go home” Bruce told you guys as he held your hand and turned his loving gaze at you and mouths an ‘i love you’ all the boys agreed to go home 

once you got home you treated Damian’s bruised hand and helped alfred make the boys’s favorite dish

“Im sorry for losing control” Bruce told you as you changed into your sleepwear and the boys get ready for their patrol you turn to him then walked towards him and gave him a kiss

“to be honest i already expected it to happen i couldve done it myself but suddenly Dami goes running to this man” you laugh as you remember the scenario its cute how the boys are also protective like their father you gave him a last hug as you finally let go

“now go out there and kick some asses” i told him he smirked then walked out the room

Sure enough the news next day were all about ‘not to mess with the wayne family’ since then no one ever even dared to make a move on you

We NEED to talk about the stuff Alfred has done.

I love Alfred ok he is the only one in the Batfam with a brain cell but really people gloss over what he did that efected Bruce and Jason's relationship. Is it all his falt? HELL NO there is so much in there that needed to be unpacked but I want ONE fanfic where Jason finds out some of the thing he is angry at Bruce about is not his falt. Like the "Good Soldier" plaque that ALFRED put up. Granted it was for a sweet moment in the comics that was between them but still "Good Soldier" really?

And about Bruce moving on to fast from Jason's death. Yes, Tim was trying to help. Yes Alfred was also trying to help but Tim is a 11 year old child that ran after Batman starting at 8 years old and had barily any idea of what a normal childhood should look like. Alfred is the adult in this situation. Dick is also to blame for why Tim was robin. Like Bruce was STILL RECOVERING from his SON'S DEATH and they give ANOTHER child the idea that "Yes you can be robin the exact thing his son died with" to a stubern CHILD that is Batman did not train would go out and get himself killed in the same suit as his child.

I see people tend to also not agnolge Jason trama from his parents yes some talk about Wilis abuse of Jason but what about Cathrean. The comic book writers make Jason drink and be intoxicated but I feel like Jason would sparingly drink or not drink at all becuase he saw first hand how it drugs effects adults. In versions of Jason mothers death she died of overdose on drug's and Jason finds her dead at 10(?). Drugs and aocahol tramatised his in more ways then one and people should agnolige that.

Tim will be at a gala then someone will say a racist "joke' to Damian or being to close and Tim is in the corner getting ALL the dirt on them and sending it to the person lover.
