Reflection Farm Diary

So Spring 8 got off to a very weird start....

Firstly, it's raining today! Which means for once I don't have to water my crops manually (thank the gods). I also got a letter from a wizard in the mail the morning. Apparently he knows how to help with the weird things I've been seeing in the old community center.

So that's the first thing I did this morning. I went over to his tower on the edge of the forest to see what he had to say. Ngl I find it weird that all wizards live in towers. Like isn't it drafty and musty in there?? Anyways, he let me in and said he could help.

He told me that apparently those little things I've been seeing are sprites called "Junimos". He even showed me one up close! Their a lot cuter than I thought, like tiny little balls with legs! I then told him about the strange note I found in the Community Center last night. He said he'd take a look and then just DISAPPEARED!?! I was so confused. I know wizards can do magic so he probably just teleported over there but at the time, I was just so shocked. Worse yet he just left me standing there, in his tower, alone...I went to go looking around, just so see if he had anything cool (I wasn't going to steal, just look, I swear) when he just waltzes back in through the front door and starts talking again like nothing happened??? Scared the crap out of me doing that. Like I get it dude, you're a wizard, but give a girl a warning next time please??

Anyways, he told me he deciphered the note but that only someone "In harmony with the forest" could read the language. And I'm standing there like, "How am I supposed to be in harmony with the forest??? I was working an office job literally last week, this is the longest I've ever been in nature in my life!" So I go to ask him how I can do that, expecting to get given a quest (wizards do that right? giving people quests sounds like a very wizard thing to do). And then he goes, "here, drink this!" and hands me a cup of this gross looking (and smelling) green liquid straight from the cauldron in his living room. I drink it anyways because its probably easier than a quest, and omg it was horrible. I felt sick, I wanted to puke, and worst of all I started hallucinating flying pine trees!!! Next thing I know, he's kicked me out, I'm coming off the worst drug trip I've ever had, and now I'm soaking wet because its pouring rain!

But hey, now I know how to read Junimo so I guess it worked out.

The rest of the day I just spent clearing the farm and running errands. There are a lot of stray trees and branches and rocks everywhere so I want to get those cleaned up. I really want to build a coop soon, so I need the space. I also got some geodes processed at the Blacksmith's (his name is Clint, he seems nice) and donated some minerals I found in them to the museum.

That's all for today, I'm exhausted. Taking care of a farm is so much work! (Still less soul crushing than an office job though). Tomorrow, more clearing land and preparing an area for the coop!

Finally decided to play my solo Stardew Valley world again. I'm going to start posting updates about the farm and world here. The farm is called Reflection Farm and I'm just going to journal about the goings here.

Anyways, its only the 5th day of spring and I already have a new friend! Her name is Circe ^_^

While she is absolutely adorable, she doesn't really like me yet....and also likes to sit in MY spot at the table! She gets a pass because she's cute but just barely.

Welp, back to farming. Those parsnips won't grow themselves and I hear the landslide in the mountains is finally cleared so I want to go check that out today.

heard someone say archive of our own should install a "dislike" button and I thought I should say this: no, there's absolutely no need for archive of our own to install a "dislike" button.

why? because archive of our own isn't tiktok or youtube or twitter/x where users can monetize their content. archive of our own is a nonprofit site run by fans for fans, which means every content — every fanfic — you see on archive of our own was made out of pure love and passion from the artists/authors.

ao3 authors write because writing about these characters is their happiness and passion. they write for themselves, but they were generous enough to share with you their creations.

they're not "content creators" the way tiktokers or youtubers or instagram models are. they don't "make content" for views and engagements that can be monetized.

so no, you don't get to "grade their works" unless they specifically and directly ask you to.

you don't get to "say what you dislike about their works" unless they specifically and directly ask you to.

you don't get to "dislike" works that are not made specifically to please you in the first place. you're just a guest in someone's house, a house in which they let you in because they were kind, you don't get to roam around their house and say what you dislike about their furniture. you don't get to roam around their house and say you "dislike their house".

of course, you can have your opinion about the house its host invites you in. but if it's a negative one and you find yourself not liking the house, the polite things for you to do is excuse yourself and leave without telling them you dislike their house.

and just because you personally dislike the house doesn't mean the house is "ugly" either. the house you dislike could be a favorite, most luxurious place to many others.

my point is, don't be entitled by wanting the rights to voice your disapproval of things that you get to enjoy for free. don't be entitled by wanting the rights to voice your disapproval of things that were made out of love and passion — things the artists made for themselves for fun.

it makes you look like an entitled jerk with main character syndrome. the universe does not revolve around you.

now repeat after me: don't like don't read. no one forces you to continue reading a fic you don't like. quietly leave instead of being rude to authors who write for free because writing is their source of comfort.

people are so used to contents that were made because it's a trend / contents like tiktok that were made with the main purpose of reaching high engagement and making profits that they forget sometimes things can be made out of love and be made just for fun. sometimes things are supposed to just be for people to enjoy, and if some people don't enjoy them, then they can simply leave without being unnecessary unkind.

There are two types of writers:

1. 'It's fiction, it doesn't need to make sense!'

2. 'I didn't account for the rotation of the planet and how that affects the constalations while my characters stargazed at different times of year, I have failed as a writer, and this entire thing is trash'

“Social death” is the process by which a group of citizens has its identity as lawful and ideological citizens questioned to such an extent that it becomes normalized among the “fits ideological notions of citizenship” group to view them as an inherently foreign Other before anyone starts revoking citizenship.

And we’re already ass deep into that process.

The USA is not a country in which ANYONE should feel as though they have to carry their citizenship/naturalization papers on them. That is not normal, and you cannot let the media normalize it.

So earlier in art class today, someone drew a characters hands in their pockets and mentioned that hands are really like the ultimate end boss of art, and most of us wholeheartedly agreed. So then, our teacher went ahead and free handed like a handful of hands on the board, earning a woah from a couple of students. So the one from earlier mentioned how it barely took the teacher ten seconds to do what I can’t do in three hours. And you know what he responded?

“It didn’t take me ten seconds, it took me forty years.”

And you know, that stuck with me somehow. Because yeah. Drawing a hand didn’t take him fourth years. But learning and practicing to draw a hand in ten seconds did. And I think there’s something to learn there but it’s so warm and my brain is fried so I can’t formulate the actual morale of the lesson.

The health insurance industry has a term for this sadistic practice. It's called "step therapy." If the choice is between a more expensive medication that works and a cheaper one that doesn't work as well and might have worse side effects, the insurance company requires that the cheaper drug be used first.

One benefit to the insurance company is that the patient on the cheaper drug might die before they get a chance to use the drug that works but is more expensive. That's money in the bank for the insurance company.

Or, the patient might be so worn down and harmed by the cheaper drug that they just give up the fight to get the drug that will help them. Again, that's bank for the insurance company.

Honestly, if you're going to make students write all essays in class, it could also lead to the rebirth of cursive/calligraphy classes. Imagine the way we deal with ai is to suddenly all start writing like Chaucer.

Of course there would still be computer typing but just imagine hand writing with fancy curves and flourishes. Screw ai, write your essays like the Founding Fathers

An ex-colleague of mine was complaining to me the other day about the ai problem in her students' papers, and I told her, "Just make your students hand-write them in class. Easy." She looked at me like I was insane and tried to explain how that would never work, but I just said,"That's how we did it for a thousand years. The invention of word processors doesn't erase all that."

To me it seems obvious. Readings are done out of class, handwritten essays are done within it. No more ai papers.
