āOh, donāt sell Aunt Dru short, sheād at least be passive aggressive about it for double that, might even go to her grave giving you grief about itā He joked, though they both knew the truth that laid within it. Aunt Druella was just like many of the older mothers of pureblood society, and heād take a guess any rich society, knew how to use proper manners and how to hold a proper grudge. ā Itās weird to think Cousin Bella was getting married and I was just starting Hogwarts.ā Evan laughed with a shake of his head. ā Weird to think It was ten years ago I started Hogwarts, Time flies doesnāt it?ā Part of him
ā Thank you, a good fashion must run in the family because youāre easily one of the best-dressed ladies Iāve encountered tonight.ā He grinned at her compliment and easily threw one back. Heād liked cousin Alice despite the distance in beliefs from her and the other Rosierās, and the age gap between the two it was always enjoyable to see her. Sheād reminded him of his sisters, the side of them that heād always been allowed to see. Alice was kind and cared for him, something that couldnāt be said of all Rosiers. ā Youāre in luck! I came with a friend, but Iām under direct orders to mingle with family, and keeping you company fits the description. Letās find us a tableā Evan said offering his arm to Alice, waiting to walk until sheād taken it. Ā
...
Alice laughed, thinking that Evan was exactly right. No one had perfected the art of passive aggression quite like their Aunt Druella or her cohort of perfect pureblood society mothers. Though she might take the cake, and Alice felt a rush of gratitude (not for the first time this evening) that her parents were so very different. Her upbringing had been the polar opposite of her cousinsā, and though she felt a twinge of guilt that she had gotten off so easily, mostly she just felt pretty bloody lucky.Ā āWow, ten years, that is mental,ā she said in a hushed voice, shaking her head.Ā āAh, yes, ickle Evan starting Hogwarts. Iām glad I was able to be there to see you in all your adorable awkward eleven year old glory.ā
āWell, Iām quite grateful to your friend, because I would love some company.ā Taking his arm, Alice let him steer her to one of the empty tables, and they sat down next to one another, Alice sighing in relief to be off her feet. Resting her hands on her round belly, Alice leaned back in her chair.Ā āMerlin, I feel like a whale,ā she said with a chuckle, patting the bump. She turned her attention back on her younger cousin, a smile breaking out on her face at the opportunity to catch up with him.Ā āSo, tell me about your date. Tell me about your life. Itās been ages since we properly caught up.āĀ

āAlice,ā he wanted to laugh.Ā Not because he didnāt take her concerns seriously, but because it was such a ludicrous thought.Ā She was going to be the greatest mom of all time.Ā Anything less had never even crossed his mind.Ā But he didnāt laugh.Ā He sat there with her for a long time, simply searching for the thoughts that would make this okay.Ā Ā āyou already have a gaggle of twenty-somethings that look at you like a sort of parental figure, and you do brilliantly with them.Ā This kid is going to be the absolute luckiest because he has you as a mom.ā
He didnāt think that there was anything he was going to truly be able to say to sooth her fears until she got the chance to meet him.Ā Ā āIām sorry I had to go for so long, Iām sure that didnāt help.Ā But Iām here now, okay?Ā And weāll figure it all out together.Ā Weāve always been a team, weāre just bringing in a new member ā probably heāll take my spot as the cutest, but thatās a sacrifice Iām willing to make.āĀ He leaned over and pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head.Ā Ā āYouāll be brilliant, I swear it.ā
...
Alice shrugged, knowing that she was being ridiculous but unable to turn off her worries.Ā āYeah, but a bunch of twenty somethings who are fighting in a war is a way different game than a baby.ā It was ridiculous, because Alice had been lucky enough to have incredible parents, unlike all of her cousins and so many of her friends, so really she shouldnāt have this fear.Ā āItās just that Iāve been an Auror for so long that I donāt know anything else. What if I hate being a mum? Or what if I love it so much that I donāt want to be an Auror anymore?āĀ
She wanted to squirm away as he kissed her head, but forced herself to stay still, knowing that it might hurt his feelings. Alice loved that Frank was so quick to show his affection, but in moments like this, she just wanted to hide, not be loved the way that Frank never failed to love her. When she spoke again, her voice was just a whisper.Ā āAnd what if something happens to us? Or to him? Weāre in the middle of a war, Frank.ā
